The "You have to undertand these are simple folk" scene always has me howling.

Still one of the most hilarious lines in a movie.

damagedone37 Mar 22, 2026 +5
This and what hump will always be my favorite Mel brooks lines

jcfiala Mar 22, 2026 +67
I'm very fond of the lines, "A man drinks like that and he does not eat, he is going to \_die\_." Kid: "\*When?\*"

Honestly, if they wanted to reboot this movie/do a Naked Gun 2025, Alan Tudyk would be perfect.

seraphhimself Mar 22, 2026 +12
Wow. I mean they absolutely would not and should not remake this, but you’re spot on with casting Alan Tudyk.

shewy92 Mar 23, 2026 +1
What's funny is they kinda did remake Blazing Saddles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paws_of_Fury:_The_Legend_of_Hank

Oakland_Warrior Mar 22, 2026 +7
for some reason I don't think a remake would fly...
7
Little_View_6659 Mar 22, 2026 +1
Yeah. It would be a train wreck.
1
Tasty-Traffic-680 Mar 22, 2026 +5
Oh boy, a Silver Streak remake!?

keetojm Mar 24, 2026 +2
No thanks food makes me sick.

I still find it insane how Brooks had this and *Young Frankenstein* released on the same year. Best year for a comedy director? Fun fact! Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder weren't actually the first choices for this film. Brooks originally wanted Richard Pryor (who also co-wrote the script) and John Wayne, but it just wasn't possible. It would've been a lot different, but I'm glad Little and Wilder got it instead.

Gig Young was supposed to play the Waco Kid originally, but he was an actual alcoholic who couldn’t function enough for the filming so Gene Wilder replaced him.

G00DLuck Mar 22, 2026 +1
He killed his wife and committed suicide a few years later.

elegantjihad Mar 21, 2026 +20
I think John Wayne would have been a little too enthusiastic with the slurs, had he done it.
20
askyourmom469 Mar 22, 2026 +11
He probably would have found the anti-racist message of the film a little too "woke" too
11
FreshmenMan Mar 23, 2026 +2
Actually, John Wayne liked the script, but told Mel that he couldn't accept the role because he felt his fan wouldn't accept him in a film that dirty. "I laughed my ass off, but it's too dirty" but he told Brooks that if he made the film. ""he would be the first one in line to see it."

I was curious, looked it up, and she was born one year after him. You mix his first wife up with someone else?

forkoff77 Mar 22, 2026 +1
I have brought this up before and gotten a ton of examples of other fantastic examples, but yes this was a great year for the. Brooks/Wilder collaboration.

They said you was hung

They was right.

Waldron1943 Mar 22, 2026 +4
Very few people catch that one. The word "hang" has two different past tenses..."hung" for objects and "hanged" for people: The Mona Lisa was first hung in the Louvre in 1797. As a result of the Lincoln assassination, David Herold, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt were hanged.

ScreenTricky4257 Mar 22, 2026 +5
In the middle of what's basically a farce, that's a genuine moment. Bart's friend thinks he's dead, been hanged for the assault on Taggart (Slim Pickens). And he's got to keep working to build the line. And then here comes Bart on his own horse with a silver star.

The way Gene says “but I shoot with this one” always kills me. Just so basically silly

Disastrous-House591 Mar 22, 2026 +19
Wilder in the Zone. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Willy Wonka. Unmatched vibes.

philfix Mar 21, 2026 +13
What was the quip about killing more men than Cecil B. DeMille? I know who he was, but why would Mel Brooks put that in there? Just a 'tip of the hat' to the actor, or was there more?[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_B._DeMille)

lifayt Mar 22, 2026 +31
It’s because he made expansive big movies without much regard for workplace safety and was a bit notorious for making actors do dangerous stunts, so it was sort of an inside hollywood style joke about the danger of his sets.
31
philfix Mar 22, 2026 +10
Ah. Thanks for the reply. I had no idea.
10
seraphhimself Mar 22, 2026 +3
Damn, this context makes the joke resonate with the big finale in a way I never appreciated as a kid.

It absolutely does, great point! Love this movie

Wilder/Pryor movies are priceless.
7
Agitated-Acctant Mar 22, 2026 +1
Yeah but this isn't one of them. Silver Streak, Hear no Evil See no Evil, and Stir Crazy are your choices for that
1
seraphhimself Mar 22, 2026 +5
Pryor co-wrote the script, so in a way it is one of them.
5
Immediate-Machine370 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I know.

People overlook that for all the hilarious comedy, BLAZING SADDLES is also a first rate buddy movie with heart and great chemistry.

zombieshateme Mar 22, 2026 +5
had to study silent movie in rp theater in high school. told teacher it was my favorite move to quote the teacher then stated " oh ya? tell me one." I said NO!
5
cw120 Mar 22, 2026 +2
I remember watching a midday talk back show at the time. The host was interviewing Mel, and couldn't over that fact that he was making a silent movie. He said "surely you know we have colour and sound these days. Why?" And it wasn't completely silent !

keetojm Mar 24, 2026 +2
The producers, young Frankenstein, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum, it’s a mad mad mad mad world.

My dad brought me to this movie in the late 70s. I still remember him bribing me with all the snacks I wanted while he laughed at all the adult jokes and I didn't tell mom.

My daughter dated a kid named Mungo. It was close enough to Mongo that I had to stifle my chuckles.
2
bretshitmanshart Mar 22, 2026 +2
Was your daughter's name Rumpleteazer?
2
Little_View_6659 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Now that would be a name. No lol. Mungo still turns up from time to time even though they broke up years ago. Still sets off Blazing Saddles quotes in my head whenever I see him.😂
