Sounds like we should have been spaying and neutering our game show hosts instead of our pets.

Even Gene Rayburn?
78
thelunaticdreyfus Mar 18, 2026 +71
Especially Gene Rayburn.

Bashir? Hardly know *ir*.

But especially Bob Barker

And Richard Dawson.

And lets face it, wasn't the character he played in The Running Man the *real* RD? Sure seems like it.
1
bwoah07_gp2 Mar 18, 2026 +20
It was the 70s though. And there was a general cultural acceptance to the kissing, especially from the older generation. How many times did Gene kiss Betty White for example? Tons of times. It's interesting though that sometimes the younger female celebs looked like they didn't want to kiss, but they sorta kinda had too...I recall a young Jamie Lee Curtis on Match Game making a face afterwards. Idk if that was for show or genuine, but still, it happened.

It’s awful the things women had to endure because that’s was just how it was
43
takeme2tendieztown Mar 18, 2026 +31
And still do because of how it is
31
MonstersAtOurDoor Mar 18, 2026 +7
Hate to tell you, but uh… \[generally waves around at the people in charge of the world\]
7
_Fizzgiggy Mar 21, 2026 +1
I by no means meant things are all good now, because they are not. But they used to be worse for some women. I’m hopeful for the future but unfortunately skeptical
1
Crunchyfrozenoj Mar 18, 2026 +13
*Nobody* wanted a kiss. They had to put up with it because women and girls couldn’t call that stuff out yet. Hell, it’s still difficult now.
13
HildaCrane Mar 18, 2026 +15
I howled!! 🤣🤣🤣 But in all seriousness, yes.

No shit. If you watch one of the old Bob Barker episodes, he sexually harasses the pretty female contestants because it's "funny." It's hard to watch.
284
Ok_Neighborhood2032 Mar 18, 2026 +86
This felt to me like reading something I already knew to be true, in my soul. And I was like 8 when we watched it regularly.
86
CalamityClambake Mar 18, 2026 +75
Same. But a couple summers ago, I broke my foot and had to stay in a boot for like six weeks, and I discovered that there is a channel on my Roku that plays old game shows. Even compared to his peers, Bob Barker was extra creepy and *mean* to the women on his show.
75
lisaaah1123 Mar 18, 2026 +29
Did you know they filmed 5 episodes a day? You can also see him lose his patience with the contestants as the week goes on. Pluto streams them in order so if you watch long enough, you’ll watch him bully the Thursday and Friday contestants.
29
TheHighlightReel11 Mar 18, 2026 +22
Worse than Richard “*Lemme Slob You Down In Front Of Your Husband*” Dawson on Family Feud?? Oh lawd
22
galacticpotsmoker Mar 18, 2026 +2
I read about this once, Dawson got explicit permission from the contestants prior. And most of the women wanted him to kiss them. Richard Dawson was also a huge advocate for Civil Rights and Women’s Rights in the 60s and 70s.

He also appears to be a little drunk at times.
83
Undercover_Dave Mar 18, 2026 +78
And completely drunk the rest of the times.
78
Think_Bag_2987 Mar 18, 2026 +47
He also calls them dumb all the time and gives them the most belittling time possible when they lose.
47
lawgirl3278 Mar 18, 2026 +33
He used to make the female contestants put their hand in his pants pocket for money! Even as a kid I was like, “uhhh this is creepy”
33
inturnaround Mar 18, 2026 +4
It was not his pants pocket, it was his jacket pocket. But I don’t recall him doing the bit with men.
4
_chubby-puppy_ Mar 18, 2026 +17
Yep, rewatched recently and was heartbroken. Makes me appreciate Drew Carey more
17
titsmuhgeee Mar 18, 2026 +3
It's hard to watch just how common this was in this era. This really was fairly normal culture, in the workplace and on TV. Thankfully culture has changed, but it's left us a video reminder of how things used to be.
3
ImTellinTim Mar 18, 2026 +3
On the Feud, Richard Dawson would insist on a kiss lol
3
Nameless_Ghoul1891 Mar 18, 2026 +3
Like the old episodes of Family Feud with Richard Dawson. Dude was a creep to female contestants.
3
SmellyButtFarts69 Mar 18, 2026 +5
And he was the tame one. Go watch family feud. Fuckin gross.
5
Extra_Box8936 Mar 19, 2026 +1
He was actually getting consent beforehand
1
MasterOfKittens3K Mar 18, 2026 +2
When I was a kid, I was always a little bit annoyed because there were so few men who got to be contestants. It seemed unfair to me, as a young boy. Later on, I decided that it was probably a reflection of the times, because most men in the 1970s weren’t doing a lot of shopping, nor were they watching game shows on weekday mornings. These days, I realize that there was also almost certainly pressure from Barker to select pretty women to be on the show.
2
HaggardSlacks78 Mar 18, 2026 +42
We all watched Bob get all handsy with every young woman who ever stepped on stage. Them beauties must have been getting it constantly
42
imakittymeowmeow Mar 18, 2026 +329
My dad told me he went to Price is Right back in the day.. maybe like the 1970s, and he said Bob Barker was indicating women in the audience to one of his assistants as if he “wanted” them after the show. Idk if the assistant was actually pulling women aside at that moment or he was simply pointing them out so the assistant would know whom to approach later. My dad basically made it seem like Bob Barker was a major creep.
329
IdontcryfordeadCEOs Mar 18, 2026 +202
My great aunt went to a taping (probably in the 80s?) and said Bob Barker was super inappropriate and vulgar with women contestants and in the audience off camera, she never watched the show again.
202
akestral Mar 18, 2026 +38
Friends of mine went on the show in the early 2000s. They were a college club and our school was known for medical careers, so Bob kept trying to make medical puns that didn't land. My friend was also personally insulted by Barker for trying to arrange a performance with the club that Barker asked them to do. We were all 90s kids who grew up watching the Showcase Showdown while staying home sick, so it was kinda deflating to find out he was a d*** to guests. One person won a set of crystal glassware, and that was it for prizes.

Never meet your Heroes.

Gut_Reactions Mar 18, 2026 +47
My parents took us kids to a filming of TPIR, back in the day. Most of the people picked to "come on down," that day, were conventionally attractive women. During a break in filming, there was a Q&A period and a male audience member piped up and said that he noticed that all of the contestants who got picked were young, attractive women. He asked: how is TPIR picking its contestants? The TPIR guy who was doing the Q&A said that someone employed by TPIR scans the line (to get into the studio), chats up people, and chooses people who they think would be good contestants (on TV).
47
ohmegatchi Mar 18, 2026 +25
That's true to this day.  The host isn't usually involved in the contestant selection, but Bob may have been extra... particular  ...on the day you went.
25
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +146
I believe it. He was sued by one of the models for forcing her into a sexual relationship with him. He was accused of it a lot.
146
GtrGenius Mar 18, 2026 +22
More than one
22
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +19
That’s why I added that he was accused of it a lot. Several of the models in the 90s filed sexual harassment lawsuits saying he was inappropriate and or coerced them into having sexual relations to keep their jobs.
19
HeyCouldBeFun Mar 18, 2026 +67
Had a friend who got to be in the audience. She was very disillusioned. Her words: “he’s just a dirty old man”
67
Whycantigetanaccount Mar 18, 2026 +10
No excuses anymore for dirty old men.
10
demacnei Mar 18, 2026 +27
I went to a taping in the 80s as a kid. They actually go around and ask people who look good on camera to sit closer (to the cameras or Bob idk).
27
sniper91 Mar 18, 2026 +54
Heard an interview with a former Beauty and she said Barker was also a huge racist. He’d be uninterested in a relationship with a Beauty who had been with a Black man
54
RepresentativeAge444 Mar 18, 2026 +23
You can trace a lot of societal ills to this.
23
jaybird-jazzhands Mar 18, 2026 +6
They have old reruns from the beginning on tv and Barker was a sexist pig, he was gross. Apparently that was the norm because no one batted at eye at some of the batshit crazy things he would say to women.
6
stargarnet79 Mar 18, 2026 +31
But he encouraged people to spay and neuter their pets!!!
31
Servile-PastaLover Mar 18, 2026 +17
Bob needed neutering along with the pets.
17
battleofflowers Mar 18, 2026 +10
It's okay because the burden is almost always on women to deal family pet vet visits.
10
darbycrash1295 Mar 18, 2026 +154
If you watch old episodes Bob was passively aggressively rude to woman and contestants of color. Just cuz someone loves animals does not make them a good person.
154
Human_Raspberry3956 Mar 18, 2026 +17
Vladimir Putin enters the chat: an animal lover that is a really piece of shit
17
OctopiEye Mar 18, 2026 +10
Or, famously, Hitler.
10
Special-Garlic1203 Mar 18, 2026 +27
Tbh I've actually noticed that some people who are really notably shitty are also really into animals. Obviously there's good people into animals and there's bad people who are bad towards animals, but someone being really notably all *uwu save the puppies😍* actually puts me on guard now.
27
ForgetfulFrolicker Mar 18, 2026 +15
This is actually a plot point on The Sopranos. Tony loves animals but he’s a sociopath.
15
InquiringMind886 Mar 18, 2026 +19
Except for Betty White. Because we love her.
19

She called me weird once. I treasure that memory.
2
InquiringMind886 Mar 20, 2026 +2
As you should.
2
knivesout0 Mar 18, 2026 +7
I very briefly dated someone who ended up turning into a stalker, and I had to get a restraining order on them. I got bad vibes from them early, but they were so kind and sweet to all animals and I figured that was a green flag. Interesting to hear stories about people who’ve also had the opposite experience.
7
Annual-Visual-2605 Mar 18, 2026 +11
Bingo. I know several horrible people who are great with dogs. Always have their “best friend” with them. And their dog(s) adores them. But they’re still horrible people.
11
lauvan26 Mar 18, 2026 +9
Apparently, Hitler was one of those people.
9
Small_Bee_9523 Mar 18, 2026 +5

2
Desperate-Data894 Mar 18, 2026 +43
I don’t remember Bob asking any dudes to take the $100 out of his front pocket if they got the showcase showdown price exactly right.
43
Long_Reindeer3702 Mar 18, 2026 +13
Ew. I forgot about that. I wonder how many little kids thought that was cute: reaching in to an old mans pocket for money. I remember being really young and laughing at it. Hopefully, there weren't too many uncle Bob's out there make matters worse.
13
RoguePlanet2 Mar 18, 2026 +5
Oh damn, I'm in my fifties now and this is the first I'm realizing how creepy that actually was 😬
5
notthatgeorge Mar 18, 2026 +4
But I do remember a guy grabbing him and giving a kiss on the cheek, I think it happened a couple times, he was a good sport about it but he didn't like it
4
Wonderful-Athlete-83 Mar 18, 2026 +22
Not at all surprising unfortunately. Watched him harass women on daytime TV my entire childhood.
22
CrawlingKangaroo Mar 18, 2026 +3
I saw episode of the match game where him and Richard Dawson were so crude and awful to a young beautiful actress who was also on the panel, me and my mom were just shocked. We couldn’t even finish watching the episode because they were so terrible to her.
3
PrudentChampion3879 Mar 18, 2026 +91
70s game show culture. I for one am shocked…. 🙄.
91
misalawliet Mar 18, 2026 +72
Right? Like Richard Dawson kissing all the women on Family Feud.
72
Diarygirl Mar 18, 2026 +34
I was pretty young then but I knew that was super creepy.
34
Damage-Classic Mar 18, 2026 +8
There’s an episode where he asked young women, maybe 18 or 19yo, as a part of the game “what colors are your panties?” and made them answer on television. He was a CREEP.
8
PrudentChampion3879 Mar 18, 2026 +12
That story is tomorrow. All the 70 year olds who are just now offended by that.
12
bwoah07_gp2 Mar 18, 2026 +11
How many times has this conversation been had? People knew Richard was gonna kiss them, people did not mind it. And he wasn't trying to be a creep about it. Today, sure, it's not acceptable, but back then it was still a way of greeting people especially in the showbiz world.
11
porquequeso Mar 18, 2026 +8
Yeah if I recall reading, the network actually asked him to stop and then a bunch of letters came in from viewers that were in support of the kissing
8
bwoah07_gp2 Mar 18, 2026 +8
The viewers knew Richard meant no harm.
8
teamjetfire Mar 18, 2026 +11
80s, 90s, 2000’s game show culture. When do you cross the line?
11
bwoah07_gp2 Mar 18, 2026 +2
People like to create their own lines.
2
Fancy_Yesterday6380 Mar 18, 2026 +5
Unpopular opinion but I think Family Feud now is just as bad. Its almost not as fun to watch with your family because of how they go out of their way to pick questions that are sexualized constantly
5
Upbeat_Condition2342 Mar 18, 2026 +4
They are taking what was implicit and making it explicit. And putting it on the record. What's your issue with that?
4
ok-lets-do-this Mar 18, 2026 +34
>In a clip from E!'s new docuseries, Dirty Rotten Scandals, All of this has been known since 1994. They even admit that. This story only exists as an advertisement for their new show. I don’t need “advertising journalism”.

Reading this reinforces my preference for Drew Carey as host.
59
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +46
Drew seems like a really decent dude. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything bad about him.
46

He seems genuinely upset when people lose.

I saw Drew do stand up a little over ten years ago and the thing I remember most from the set was “I don’t give a shit if you win on Price is Right” lol He does seem like a genuine dude though, the line was probably meant for laughs.
22
Ok-Comfortable9639 Mar 18, 2026 +40
During the Writers Strike a few years back, he covered meals for all the writers at Bob’s Big Boy & Swingers in L.A. He’s a good one.

AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +6

6

The "worst" thing was years ago he was known to frequent strip clubs quite often. That's it. He seems to be a normal dude
19
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +23
Going to a strip club is pretty tame. As long as he was respectful to the dancers and didn’t try to cross boundaries there’s nothing wrong with it.
23
Existing-Major1005 Mar 18, 2026 +4
Hopefully he tipped well, too!
4
OfficeMagic1 Mar 18, 2026 +11
He was in the Marines. It’s required
11
CrawlingKangaroo Mar 18, 2026 +2
I went to a TPIR taping and during breaks he did a Q&A with the audience and he told this one story about getting into this huge bar fight and he described beating the hell out of a guy. I was like “ok drew, I see you!” He was a Marine, so probably a lot tougher than his public persona suggests. I really enjoyed that taping of the show because it did feel like he was just chillin and bullshitting with the crowd during breaks. He was cool.
2
PEPESILVIAisNIGHTMAN Mar 18, 2026 +8
I have been at a handful of events Drew Carey has been present at, and he is always such a gem. Doesn’t matter if it’s a live Survivor finale, or a comedy show, he’s always such a wonderful part of the evening. I was lucky enough to see him at a show a few weeks ago where we watched his Gepetto musical from the early 2000s, and he and a panel of comedians absolutely obliterated it with their commentary. I legitimately don’t think I have ever laughed that hard in my entire life. Drew is fuckin’ awesome, and I’d be devastated to learn he is not actually a good guy.
8
Charlie_Warlie Mar 18, 2026 +3
Not worth liking anyone when 40 years later you learn they are a creep. I joke but uh... I mean you see how it goes.

Netflix warning up a new documentary?
8
No_Fig_5964 Mar 19, 2026 +3
This is for a new series on E!...it's just like True Hollywood Story, now under a new title. In fact, I remember THS doing an episode about The Price is Right back when Barker was still hosting. I'm pretty certain that besides any newer information that's come out since the mid-2000s, this episode about TPIR will be a regurgitation of stuff from the TPIR THS episode.

21

Definitely not coincidental. The truth is, he's dead, so while his reputation may suffer the consequences of this revelation, he himself is beyond caring. The real loser at this point is that town in New Mexico.

This is not news to me. I remember people talking about this in the 70's and the 80's. He was married, and constantly hitting on women, and making their lives hell. It was awful. ETA: Thank you for my award!😃👍

Old dude hosting game shows from olden days is sexist ....shocker
6
cha-cha_dancer Mar 18, 2026 +6
We get a channel that just plays Bob era TPIR (mostly from 1980-1985, some 70s). Found that he often did make iffy comments towards attractive female contestants, and any time he said “woah that person is too excited please don’t hurt me if you come up here” they were black. Soured my taste a bit.

Now? Also no. In 20 years? Well, not able to see the future, but it doesn't look promising.

Something abhorrent like 60% of all women have been sexually assaulted. Not harassed, that’s probably 99%, but actually assaulted. Men are assholes.
9
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +17
Unfortunately barker was not a good guy. He coerced models into sleeping with him to keep their job. Also if they gained weight or got pregnant he would fire them.

He was racist too.

1
AdditionalWind763 Mar 18, 2026 +15
That’s why drew is the better host. Models have been pregnant during his tenure. They also have male models. None of this stuff went on during the barker era.

Yeah, calling out the bad behavior is the problem. Good call.

I remember saying "Oh my god he punched Bob Barker!" because you don't see many young men hitting old men in movies.

You can still have fond memories of the 80s/90s Price Is Right. I am not of that generation, but when I watch the old episodes I enjoy it. It's good entertainment. In the same way a person can watch the Cosby Show or Seinfeld and not feel weirded out by the actions of one of the main stars of the show. People take their "personal ick" of these shows and celebs way too seriously sometimes.

I’m sorry but no. Bill Cosby was a violent raping machine. I’ll *never* again be able to watch his shows the way I did when I was a kid. That’s f****** absurd. Knowledge *does* change things, dude.

Couldn’t watch family feud when I was little because the original host was a complete creep. Even then I knew something was wrong.

I worked at a large law firm that represented a woman who filed a lawsuit against the Price is Right back in like 2010 for pregnancy discrimination and I can’t quite remember the details (I was just the legal secretary) but yeah, it made me realize that set was a nightmare for women in general.

I've been watching old reruns of The Price is Right and I knew it was a little over the top as far as harassment goes, but some of the things he said and did we're really shocking, looking from today's lens

Why is every celebrity from my childhood either a sex offender or a MAGA supporter? WTF.

When I was 18 we played a drinking game. Every time Bob copped a feel we would have a shot.

Hangover? There’s a channel on Prime that plays these old episodes 24/7!

I am a big fan of classic gameshows. It's a disappointing thing when the golden era of this show does have a tainted, behind the scenes legacy. I'm always happy that Holly won her lawsuit, even when it dragged out over a decade and left her with pennies, literally, before Barker & CBS settled. >"When I initially started the show, everybody was pretty cool, really friendly, especially the crew," Bradley began. "But over a course of time, I kind of noticed the guys were kind of talking, looking, gawking at the girls. I found out this is a little more commonplace than I thought." The show ran for so long, the "old boys club" culture grew into a nasty thing. By the 80s (and by the time Barker was single after his wife Dorothy Jo died in 1981), it seems this bad behaviour on set skyrocketed because Barker was a freeman by that time. I watch the old episodes and while the knowledge of this misbehaviour is known, it doesn't bother me outright, but it is something to think about. It's in the back of my mind at times. Such a shame they let it be that way.

An old episode from the 80s came on the other day and in it Bob made the comment “I almost didn’t recognize you with clothes on” to one of the beauties and I was like wow what a f****** prick. Creepy old man.

Watch some eighties television and the way Gen X Trump supporting men act is really easy to see and the influence kinda shocking. Try something obvious like duke of hazard or any comedy with a monkey a semi and a black trans am.
