This smells like someone taking advantage of Bob. He’s 84 years old, no way he came up with this on his own

My elderly in-laws adore AI. I constantly get AI-generated 'look at what I wrote' or 'look at this cute picture of my grandkids as elves' from my MIL. They aren't even stupid people, they used to be surgeons.

Neveroxx99 Mar 31, 2026 +44
AI is pretty cool on it's own if you disregard all the negative consequences it has.
44
Filligan Mar 31, 2026 +44
Someone once said the same thing to me about cocaine.
44
Remarkable-Ad9529 Mar 31, 2026 +13
I wish I could disregard all the negative effects of cigs too
13
mrastickman Mar 31, 2026 +2
Well, yeah, half of an average p******* is basicly cocaine and heroine. It depends on how you use it.
2
DtheAussieBoye Apr 1, 2026 +2
The thing is, most of the general public aren’t aware of those negative consequences. Especially the older folk, you really think they know about anything beyond it being cool tech?
2
secret_aardvark_420 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Even then, is it really though?
2
Slinto69 Apr 1, 2026 +5
Yes, I mean objectively it is, if it wasn't a big deal no one would be mad at it and it'd just be being ignored.

Hoop and stick was better.

They absolutely should not be feeding personal pictures or information to those models. People will let their guard down so easily.
1
VelociRapper92 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Older people love AI because they don’t understand the implications of it, they just see it as a new toy. Those of us who were raised on the internet know what this new technology can do and what it means for humanity.
1
Ok-Comfortable9449 Mar 31, 2026 +142
That's what I'm saying somebody told him bogus info about this and he said yes without even knowing what he signed up for
142
EagleLize Mar 31, 2026 +24
No doubt. How about " Someone has manipulated and taken advantage of Bob Dylan to launch AI created garbage".
24
FuckTheStateofOhio Mar 31, 2026 +54
This smells like someone defending a musician they like who has already sold out multiple times in his career and is doing something completely on brand.
54
soozerain Mar 31, 2026 +31
That’s what I’m saying. Anybody that’s been to a Bob Dylan show in the last 20 years knows the man doesn’t care if he rips off his fans.
31
Character-Ad-3164 Mar 31, 2026 +10
He purposely makes his songs unrecognizable now. They sound nothing like the originals. I had a horrible time at his show
10
NoPantsJake Mar 31, 2026 +7
Man, I had a great time seeing Bob Dylan last year. My expectations were low after I’d heard about past shows from friends, but he played a couple of classics and sounded pretty solid. I had a great time. My buddy did say it was way better than when he saw Dylan a couple years prior.
7
notevebpossible Mar 31, 2026 +7
Yeah, I saw him in Saratoga last summer, he sucked, but Willie Nelson was badass
7
Squalid_Hovel Mar 31, 2026 +6
I went to that tour. Willie’s voice was better than Dylan’s but at least Dylan is still able to play his instruments. Willie’s playing sounded like a child banging haphazardly on a guitar.
6
PawPawsLilStinker Mar 31, 2026 +2
I saw willy back in maybe 2008 and that's how he played back then.
2
UpsideTurtles Mar 31, 2026 +1
Willie’s voice was better than Bob’s? That’s crazy Willie’s voice was going out like a decade ago if not more lol maybe he gave up smoking
1
Squalid_Hovel Mar 31, 2026 +5
He sounded f****** terrific to me - especially given his age. Bob lost his voice in the 80s. After the cocaine and yelling of the Rolling Thunder tour, he wasn’t the same
5
ObscureRamenRecipes Mar 31, 2026 +1
He actually did give up smoking and now does only edibles.
1
pi0t3r Mar 31, 2026 +1
The arrangements of last year's rough and rowdy tour iteration were really good. Also, it helps if he plays in a theater with proper acoustics— he plays in a lot of converted movie palaces that don't carry sound well. If you saw him at the outlaw tour, then he's just messing about. The attendees at those concerts are all wasted and not really paying attention to anything anyway.
1
jhenryscott Mar 31, 2026 +5
He’s got a habit. Which yes I realize how insane that is at his age. But it doesn’t make it any less true. He gets roped into dumb shit all the time for money.
5
DazzlingCapital5230 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Like a current drug habit at 84? Sounds tiring
1
jhenryscott Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah man. It’s a shame but also incredibly wild.
1
Open-Addendum-9905 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Wait, what? Is this like common knowledge? Doing drugs at 84 is wild
1
starcraash666 Mar 31, 2026 +10
Agreed. Ask Bob to explain this thing he is doing, I guarantee he only partially understands any of it at best
10
TheLordofthething Mar 31, 2026 +13
I think he'd just tell you to f*** off, he's very prickly.
13

He got busted a year or two ago selling fake autographs. First it came out the book he was selling for $600 wasn't actually signed. He sold 900 of them. So he made over half a million dollars selling fake autographs to fans.  Then it came out he didn't actually sign anything since 2019, which means the art prints he sold a signed weren't actually signed. Some of those cost up to $15k. He had the nerve to blame covid, which, if you collect autographs at all you know private signings exploded during that time because it was the only safe way to get autographs while conventions were shut down. All he had to do was have a rep for Simon and Schuster mail him 900 insert pages or book plates. He could've signed them by himself and just mailed them back.  He said he didn't think there was a difference between having a machine sign them, and doing it himself despite advertising the book as "hand signed". So to me, it's not at all surprising he doesn't think having a machine do the work for him is problematic.

His 2011 exhibition of “original paintings” at the Gagosian gallery in nyc included a bunch of blatantly plagiarized work. [link](https://archive.nytimes.com/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/26/questions-raised-about-dylan-show-at-gagosian/?ref=artsf)

I paid money to see him about a year and a half ago, and I’m not sure he even knew what songs he was playing anymore. It’s bad.
23
GrimaceGrunson Mar 31, 2026 +18
We saw him live...I wanna say 5 years back? He shuffled on stage, no acknowledgment to the audience at all, then played his set without pausing between songs so you really didn't know where one ended and the other began, then just left. It was the funniest concert I'd been to in a while, 5 stars.
18
TheLordofthething Mar 31, 2026 +18
I saw him 32 years ago and he was exactly the same. At one point he left the stage because people were singing along. Absolutely zero engagement, just mumbling.
18
Chulasaurus Mar 31, 2026 +10
I saw 92yo Willie Nelson that same day. Willie sits the whole show, and his son does most of the heavy lifting now in the band, but Willie was still telling jokes and stories in between songs, very personable guy. It was my third time seeing Dylan. My first time was in college in 2000, for $23. I’ll always remember it fondly because it was in that week between Election Day and the Supreme Court handing it to W. Come to think of it, Bob wasn’t a whole lot different back then, either.
10
Marhyc Mar 31, 2026 +4
The most interesting thing about his recent concerts was that one time he tripped on some cables and almost fell down, then told the audience to put down the phones
4
freddielovesdelilah Mar 31, 2026 +5
We saw him 2 years ago. His set was in between John Mellancamp and Willie Nelson. There was a woman sitting next to me who started snoring. She fell asleep his show was so boring. Most of us in attendance got up to use the bathroom, get drinks, or socialize until Willie Nelson’s performance. Both Willie Nelson and Mellancamp were amazing. Willie Nelson bought the house down. Idk what happened with Dylan. I think whoever planned the lineup put him on second to keep people from leaving.
5
Surroundedonallsides Mar 31, 2026 +3
That actually rivals the Primus show I went to a few years back after their most recent album release. Everyone in the audience wanted to just hear the handful of radio hits they did, but the band made an executive decision to play the entire new album instead. The audience was PISSED and booing and throwing things on stage before eventually just leaving the stadium. I sat on the balcony, enjoyed my $20 beer, and laughed and laughed and laughed. By the end there were just a handful of people on the floor while they finished up.
3
ThunkAsDrinklePeep Mar 31, 2026 +3
The Band is the best thing to come out of Dylan.
3
retrofrenchtoast Mar 31, 2026 +2
Back in the 90s I started writing to various places asking for autographed pictures. Whoever is in charge of that for Bob Dylan sent me a nice big picture with an autograph.

I’m willing to believe he was deceived and it won’t last long.

Funny thing is people said similar stuff about him when he started playing electric guitar. Guy has always been interested in using new technology to create things.

Electric guitar was still him creating at least

🤷‍♂️ most people here haven’t created something interesting with AI. It’s not like you just give it a two sentence prompt. It’s just another tool that enables you something to make that you couldn’t before.
-6
lynchcontraideal Mar 31, 2026 +70
Playing electric guitar and pushing AI slop are not the same equivalence at all. Nothing similar or funny here.
70
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 -6
People were equally as pissed when he started playing electric guitar. People really hated it, and he just ignored it.
-6
Suggested_rndom_name Mar 31, 2026 +30
Comparing the electric guitar to AI slop is certainly a choice
30
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 31, 2026 -3
Lots of similarities. People similarly hated the electric guitar back then, because it wasn’t “real music”.

Please elaborate, I've begun scratching the surface. My friend who likes him said his live shows were always a coin flip of he'd be too drunk to play well or not

It's not exhaustive, but the hit parade deep dive into early Dylan did a lot to demystify him for me. https://pca.st/episode/bad79fd4-f1d0-4b25-b2ed-36722f8ad49d

When was the last time YOU went to the opera or ballet? I like both types of art and it’s true, they’re both dying. He may have been shitty about it but he didn’t tell a lie.

What? We’re talking about Bob Dylan.

14

"Making" is a strong word, but Dylan did cover a Cole Porter song for the soundtrack to the Reagan propaganda flick. That enough was a shitty thing to do.
22
Neither_Transition_7 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Wow, what the heck?! Really strange
2
dandle Mar 31, 2026 +2
Very strange. According to Dennis (Right-wing Sack of Dogshit) Quaid, they just reached out to Bob and asked whether he would be willing to contribute a song for the propaganda piece if they gave him total artistic control over the work. Bob agreed. Maybe Bob really liked *Innerspace* or something.

I’m a huge Bob fan. I’ve seen him a few times. One time a few years ago actually I was buying a ticket at the box office. The lady working I was talking to mentioned she’d been in the industry a long time. Worked for the Dead for a long time met a lot of folks…  Naturally I asked “have you ever met Bob?” “Yes and he’s a total a******!”  She was a cool down to earth older lady who had met him a few times and had to let it be known … not a cool hang at all lol but great music of course

Bob Dylan, one of the most famous musicians ever, playing small theaters and opening for Willie Nelson tells me he hasn't made alot of good decisions in his life.

7
Elementium Mar 31, 2026 +21
This is what bugs me most about the Internet these days. People are revealed as shitty and suddenly everyone believes theyre talentless hacks.  They WANT to rewrite history to punish assholes. It's not great.
21
erexcalibur Mar 31, 2026 +6
It's more a problem of people not knowing how to separate art from the artist. So the art they acclaim can only be produced by good people, the moment people do something bad their art must be invalidated in every possible way. Look at the way people overanalyze Harry Potter to justify that Rowling is a horrible person.

I would find it interesting to hear what Bob Dylan could come up with using AI. His choice of what historically figures to use or what to prompt it to write about would be different than most people.

He probably has some Gen Z kid writing the prompts. Not sure exactly when he lost his soul, but it’s been gone for a while. https://variety.com/2022/music/news/bob-dylan-regrets-autopen-signatures-art-books-apology-1235442296/
