This is honestly just devastating. 27 is way too young to go, and reading that 1st Lt Key was apparently trying to help a fellow soldier just makes the whole thing even more of a tragedy. You really have to feel for his family in Richmond right now, and I am still holding out hope that they find the second soldier soon so that family can at least have some closure too. It is such a heavy loss for his unit and everyone out there in Morocco, just a heartbreaking accident.

Yeah. It is a tragedy. As soon as I heard it, I looked into the geology of the cliffs - very much like SAnd or Lookout moutains in Alabama or Cumberland and Waldens Ridge in TN.... Flat sandstone layer over limestone. The limestone gets dissolved away by the ocean leaving an overhang of sandstone, that breaks off eventually making jagged rocks at the bottom and a cauldron of water underneath the overhang with no good exit. I knew they were gone when I learned the geology. It sucks. It's not right. But it is the nature of the geology there.

Those in charge of our military have been utterly silent about this.
It’s horrific.

My BIL is over there and told the family about this. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Accidental deaths should be unacceptable. The rigor of acceptance should deter this. Although slipping off a cliff into rough seas along a jagged coast is an unexpected risk for Army.

Accidental deaths during training are already unacceptable. Accidental deaths during off duty liberty can be unavoidable sadly. I’m a veteran myself and I can tell you from first hand experience that the military tries its damndest to prevent off duty mishaps. I’ve lost count of every safety brief and piles of paperwork I had to endure and submit before weekends, holidays, and taking leave. Sadly, shit happens and there’s nothing you can do about it.

I suppose all of the soldiers from the other countries participating in the exercise should have stayed home too?

I get it, but this isn't the place to be saying that. A family is grieving the loss of their son, who died far too young.

Um, well it would be mutual defense since it’s NATO exercises. Countries need militaries. You do understand they aren’t actually fighting anyone it’s just training right

Wow, it’s like the US Government doesn’t want us to know the actual damage that Iran has done to its over seas stations!?! But they wouldn’t lie to the people about this stupid ass war that Drumpf got us into for no reason?!?!
