Ashamed to be Canadian today, one of the few crimes that should have a death penalty. smh, bringing doubt to Canadian syrup dominance

A simple "sorry" won't cut it?

Not for this.

But a “*pardon*” might

Mokmo Apr 3, 2026 +1
You don't want a Canadian to be not sorry. This story is one of them.

Hey, so what did the system do to the perpetrators of the mass syrup heist of 2012?

Mon sirop d'érable n'est pas pur ??? *Tabarnak!!!*

Affectionate-Print81 Apr 2, 2026 +45
They cut it with cane sugar. It was tested in 5 different stores so it's obviously the producer that is responsible. Apparently it was only $5 a can which makes sense since everyone else was selling the same amount for around $10.

I'd be automatically suspicious of any maple syrup selling less than the others, as the prices are pretty much the same regardless of producer as long as it's the same grade of syrup.

Calice de pourri sale, j’espère que le cartel du sirop d’érable va le mettre sur la paille et lui faire fermer son érablière de marde!

thatfatbastard Apr 2, 2026 +7
>Dirty rotten chalice, I hope the maple syrup cartel will put it on straw and make it close its marten sugar bush! From Google translate. I love y'all up north, visit as often as I can. But, I have no idea what this means.

AnalogFeelGood Apr 3, 2026 +5
I was saying "Dirty rotten b******, I hope the maple syrup cartel will put him on the street, and close his shit sugar shack"

thatfatbastard Apr 3, 2026 +4
Thank you! I'm trying to learn French, but having a rough go at it. I knew that translation was way off.

ghanima Apr 3, 2026 +1
TIL "paille" is the French word for street.
1
AnalogFeelGood Apr 3, 2026 +4
Paille = Straw (the one they put in stables for the horses to sleep on). When you're "Sur la paille", you're not doing very well financially. When you wish someone gets there, you're wishing for their financial ruin which is what this fraudster deserve.

Ah, an idiom! Very cool. Thanks for taking the time to correct me!

Why does everyone have to be a freeking crook?! You have a great business, you’re doing well, but no you have to screw the system to get even more. Jail his ass!

Sadly I have one of the cane sugar cans. A real sense of betrayal here! I was scammed! In all seriousness, though, it is pretty messed up to commit consumer fraud like this, especially with food products. I know we're all laughing at the Canadian/Québécois stereotypes, but it's pretty concerning.

Food adulteration/fraud is pretty widespread. I think there have been studies that say that half of imported honey is cut with c**** sugar syrup. It's especially easy to do when it comes to something like a premium sweetener like maple syrup or honey that has a cheaper substitute.

Can someone explain: The cans with the classic design you see in grocery - the one featured in the article - all have syrup that comes from different producers in Quebec? But then this guy was selling not only syrup that was cut, but also trying to pass off Ontario syrup as Quebec syrup? And what's this about testing bulk syrup? Does Quebec import maple syrup from outside Canada? Interesting system but it seems more testing and regulations should be in place for producers who want to sell through this "classic can" design.

We take maple syrup very seriously up here. Good and bad can come from that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Canadian_Maple_Syrup_Heist

Who would do such a horrible inhuman thing? My heart goes out to all the victims of this terrible crime. Only the swiftest and harshest Justice is fit for those that would do such a thing. And to do such a thing now, at the beginning of syrup season? True blasphemy.

Testing makes this kind of fraud easy to catch.

Is this the Canadian equivalent of when those French guys who tried to steal a spring from a disabled guy and his daughter had an American exchange student who exposed that they put antifreeze in their wine?

Oh no... Do I have to buy Vermont maple syrup now? 😰
1
Nickmorgan19457 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Fun fact, most of the Vermont labeled maple syrup comes from Canada. You can only guarantee you’re getting the good stuff if you buy from a local.
2
CherryChabbers Apr 3, 2026 +2
At the local supplier in VT you can get plastic jugs for syrup branded “Pure Minnesota Maple Syrup” right next to the VT ones
2
Nickmorgan19457 Apr 3, 2026 +1
My guy doesn't even buy the Vermont ones anymore. They just say "Maple Syrup".

One step forward and a marathon back. Maybe this is a way to reduce our population. Kind of like the billionaire tech bros want to do with Network States.

This is proof Canada wants to send illegal immigrants to take my job. First they fake maple syrup. Then they fake drivers licenses. Everyone should only use Mrs Butters worth as protest. And don't let them try to make fake margarine.
