Yeah this is straight out of the old cartoons. But it's ingenious. In a way it's taken out of Israel's playbook a la pagers. Explosives somewhere where you least expected them to be. Something so devoid of being weaponized and benign is now seen as a danger.
Will we see the Russian's now using Adidas sandals?

It was a segment aired on Russian state media a few days ago. If I remember correctly they tied it in with the coincidental shutting down of Moscow and St.Petersburg WiFi.
I don’t know, personally, when something like this is shown on Russian state media I automatically assume it’s either completely fabricated, exaggerated, or simply a false flag. Putin is absolutely in love with false flags.

Why is this "Israel's playbook"? This has been going on forever. For instance British forces would disguise explosives as coal and sneak it into the German railroad's coal supply which would blow up train boilers when it was fed into the fireboxes. But in this case they were just copying tactics used by confederate special operatives in the US civll war who did the exact same thing.
Really how is this significantly different from the Trojan horse?

Bullets for 9mm are like 124 grains. The powder used to poot them are like 5 grains
10
LaplaceOperatorMar 30, 2026
+10
Grains are also commonly used in the EU to denote the charge of propellant in a cartridge and the weight of projectiles. It's not a specifically American thing. Here is the German Wikipedia entry for the [9mm Luger](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_%C3%97_19_mm) cartridge. You'll see that the bullet weight is described in terms of grain in the section on the development of the cartridge (Entwicklung).
It's just like how Zoll (= 1 inch) is used to measure TVs and pipe diameters in Germany. Sometimes non-metric units are useful and stick around.
10
KotratsMar 30, 2026
+2
All the units are mixed when it comes to guns. Bullet weights are in grains or grams, bullet diameters is millimeters or inches.
2
WendellSchadenfreudeMar 30, 2026
+1
You are right in that this is sometimes done, e.g. German Wikipedia ([in the article about the unit itself](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gran_(Einheit\))) states this:
> Die Einheit wird zunehmend durch Karat bzw. Milligramm ersetzt. Jedoch werden die Massen von Hand- und Faustfeuerwaffengeschossen, von Pfeilspitzen sowie von Treibladungspulver bei Munition weiterhin allgemein in englischen Grain angegeben.
> (auto-translate) The unit is increasingly being replaced by carats or milligrams. However, the masses of handgun and pistol bullets, arrowheads, and propellant powder in ammunition are still generally given in English grains.
But it doesn't seem to be common on its own at all. For example, the article you quoted:
> You'll see that the bullet weight is described in terms of grain
No, you won't.
The bullet weight is stated as "4,08–9,53 g", and the g is for grams, not grain.
In the article text, there is a bullet weight given in grain once, but only in combination with the weight in grams: "124 grain bzw. 8 Gramm Gewicht".
- - -
If you want to see a really fucked-up use of units, look at the English version of the article, which includes this sentence:
"The 9×19mm Parabellum has 0.86 ml (13.3 grains H2O) of cartridge case capacity."
So there, they aren't just using grains as a unit of mass, but also as a unit *of volume*, by comparing to the amount of water that would have the same volume.
1
IAmStukaMar 30, 2026

3
FakjbfMar 30, 2026

Grain is a unit of weight, specifically 1/7,000 of a pound. Smokeless powder is often shaped into tiny balls called kernels and there will be many kernels per grain. The exact number depends on how big the kernels are and different loadings will vary the kernel size to change the burn rate to try and optimize the performance. A quick Google search says it’s roughly 30-60 kernels per grain though I assume you can find lots that are bigger or smaller. So there’s not five kernels of smokeless powder in a 9mm cartridge it’ll be more like 200 kernels which weighs 5 grains.

The Allies did that to the Nazi. They stuffed dead rats full of explosives and shipped them to saboteurs in occupied territory. The idea was to put the dead rat near a broiler (ship, factory, engine) where someone would find it and dispose of it in the most convenient way: tossing it in the fire.
The Nazis intercepted the shipment, but became so paranoid they searched high and low for exploding rodents. So much that the operation was deemed successful

I used to have heated insoles, you get a little battery pack and like a scrunchy that you can put on your fat part of your leg that I can't think the name of.
This usually has a tail that hangs down and your insolves have the male tails coming up. They only last for a few hours, so you would more than likely keep it unplugged until you start having painful feet. Depending on their operation they might not even plug them in for weeks. Because chances are you're not getting new batteries any time soon.
The catch is because of that, your hands are going to be close to the power source if you ever intend to use them too. But also the ones I had got a recall notice for lighting themselves on fire. This is just an Amazon delivery landmine.
It really is a-z

So the next time those soldiers plug in their boots, BLAMMO!
But why would anyone plug in a boot?

They're supposed to be electrically heated insoles, gotta plug it in to power it.

I'd suspect heat sensitive explosives that went off a bit after the sole was activated.
Another option might be impact sensitive, and it goes off from walking or running. That risks going off during transport though.

As someone with plantar fasciitis and pronated feet, this would be a nightmare.

Can't have plantar fasciitis if you dont have a plantar fascia.

I also have bad feet. When I read the headline I said "Oh! Bad arch support is going to f*** those guys up!"
This is so much worse. I love this for them!

As much as I am glad Ukraine got one over on Russia, messing with charitable aid feels like it borders on a war crime

The use of the term humanitarian aid in the article is misleading, gear for soldiers is not humanitarian aid. If there's any issue here it's that the devices are indiscriminate and if a civilian were to get their hands on one it could injure them.

The danger of running your military via donations. Wonder if Russian soldiers will be getting cold feet?

Even if this is completely false, it only needs to be believable enough that soldiers feel a small hint of doubt when putting their shoes on, that'd make morale drop even further.
