Regardless of how you feel about Booker, I think he's making a good point, **and we know WHY!**
Snippet:
* Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on Sunday criticized President Trump over paying Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers amid the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.
* “I just want to continue to emphasize that we are seeing a colossal failure in presidential leadership. Because this president has said, again, ‘I have the power to pay TSA agents, and I’m going to do that,’” Booker told NBC News’s Kristen Welker.
>“*Why didn’t he do this weeks ago when we started seeing the suffering of folks at the airports?* And remember, **this fight has never been about TSA**,” he added.
EDITED TO ADD: Blaming the Democrats was his reasoning!!
>“If Democrats in the Congress will not act to honor the service of our TSA officers, who are now performing their critical public safety responsibilities without knowing whether they will be able to buy food for their families or pay their rent, then my Administration will take action,” the memo reads.

a_talking_faceMar 29, 2026

My point was if people can violate the constitution with impunity then arguing about what the constitution says is an academic exercise.
We are saying the same thing.
8
a_talking_faceMar 29, 2026
+6
Oh I see what you mean. Honestly my stance is that the constitution itself is largely meaningless outside of a few specific things. When it comes to presidential powers everything is largely just left up to whatever the current power structure decides and the government has mostly been captured by conservatives for decades.
6
eskimospy212Mar 29, 2026

I would say the presidential system set up in the constitution was an inherently flawed form of democracy that trends towards despotism.
So while yes conservatives have done this it was always baked in.
5
BorntoBombMar 30, 2026

Any system can trend towards despotism , if enough of the power structure abdicates their own authority.
Honestly it is a case of ideological rot on the right that got us to this current point. You can try and blame the system, but weve seen worse times as a nation without this outcome.
This is not the outcome of a genuine crisis, this is an outcome of manfactured perception on the right

It’s unconstitutional to make people work without pay. Essential workers should be considered funded under a CR automatically. If Congress has a problem that can denote them nonessential so they don’t work.

Unconstitutional becomes just a difference of opinion when there is no body in power willing to act when laws are broken. The only thing against the law is that which is actively prohibited and prosecuted; all else is permissible under our current system, provided you are properly connected.

Perhaps I misinterpreted what he said, but I wasn't suggesting it was legal nor did I think that's what he meant. I just know that Trump has used this issue, as he has with other issues (the SNAP pause, etc.) to blame the Democrats. So, that's how I read the second paragraph.
“I just want to continue to emphasize that we are seeing a colossal failure in presidential leadership. Because this **president has said**, again, **‘I have the power** to pay TSA agents, and I’m going to do that,’” Booker told NBC News’s Kristen Welker.
“Why didn’t he do this weeks ago when we started seeing the suffering of folks at the airports? And remember, this fight has never been about TSA,” he added.
1
buffalotraceMar 29, 2026

What booker should be saying is: Its not legal. He has held up the government to to pass an unfunded mandate to disenfranchise voters that is also in direct opposition to the Constitution while also allowing ICE to terrorize American streets. We had bill in place to fully fund the rest of DHS, but Donald Trump pushed his party to reject it. What Donald is proposing isnt a solution and like most of what he does, ignores the law.
44
a_talking_faceMar 29, 2026

Nah keep it simple. Brevity works well in politics. Trying to push messaging about "well trump paid them but it's technically illegal and here's what we tried but Trump said no but he is actually paying them" is complicated. It's much easier to just say he was withholding their pay to further his agenda.

This a real Catch-22.
If congress allows Trump to do this, they cede him even more power, as using funds for this that have been appropriated elsewhere is grossly illegal. If he’s allowed to move around funds this way in this case, you’d better believe the next case will be something even more egregious.
On the other hand, if congress blocks their use of funding in this manner, it will be easy for the White House to frame it as “Democrats stopping TSA agents from getting paid in order to use it as political ammo”.
Congress either hands MAGA a big political win, or hands them more of their constitutional power. Time will tell which is worse, I certainly can’t.
