Botched source material that deserves the Dune treatment

Posted by Apprehensive_Shirt18

Dune is probably the clearest example of what that would be like. The 1984 adaptation was such a mess that it basically buried the franchise’s potential for decades, even though the books had so much more to offer. It took Denis Villeneuve to finally give the source material the kind of adaptation it deserved. For me though, my pick would be The Strain. The books had way more potential than what ended up on screen. The show had some cool ideas and moments, but the writing was all over the place, the execution felt messy, and most of the characters were hard to root for. It never really captured what made the source material so interesting in the first place. (Ideally an adaptation would’ve improved upon the books since they had some flaws too)

They needed to forget the second season of **Altered Carbon** and instead do a proper adaptation of the second book.

biophazer242 Apr 16, 2026 +6
Man how did they screw that up so badly. Unreal.
6
anbeck Apr 16, 2026 +11
Wait, are you telling me there is a second book and Netflix somehow chose to ignore it and instead decided to come up with whatever season 2 was?
11
ParticulateSplatter Apr 16, 2026 +16
Never would Netflix disregard quality source material and decide they know better what the fans want from a franchise. \*Stares pointedly at The Witcher\*
16
boothillion Apr 16, 2026 +4
To be fair I've read most of the Witcher books and they are not very good to put it mildly. Unfortunately what they came up with instead was not very good either.
4
Faithless195 Apr 16, 2026 +4
Unfortunately, the games are the best Witcher media to date. The books are above average at best. And considering the best part of the tv series is literally the first episode only, should've never bothered making it. I'm downright surprised Cavill lasted for three seasons.
4
svrtngr Apr 16, 2026 +2
Were the books considered good at the time of publication, or were they always kind of mid with a fanbase?
2
Faithless195 Apr 16, 2026 +1
I'm not Polish, but they seemed to have been well received there on release. Obviously enough for there to be nearly a dozen of the books. But they didn't get any real worldwide recognition until after the first game came out.

CradleRobin Apr 16, 2026 +1
I love the short stories! But yeah.....
1
airchinapilot Apr 16, 2026 +6
There are three books, they are all good. It was a nonsense adaptation of the third book with a couple elements from the second book and some made up backstory to try to tie it together.
6
dageshi Apr 16, 2026 +3
Ahh, it's a hard set of stories to adapt given each book jumps to vastly different locations (worlds) and each time you have a new "sleeve" for the main character. It doesn't matter in book form because we're still reading the main character, but for tv... honestly I don't think it's really viable, people who liked the first one are just gonna wtf out of the second because it's so completely different.

ancalagon73 Apr 16, 2026 +29
Don't get me wrong, I found Villeneuve's Dune to be a fantastic adaptation, but SciFi channel's Dune and Children of Dune (2000 and 2003) were also really good. Worth a watch if you have not seen them.
29
Atharaphelun Apr 16, 2026 +12
They are far more faithful adaptations of the books, in fact. Villeneuve cut too much and altered certain fundamental things (*Chani* for one).
12
Apprehensive_Shirt18 Apr 16, 2026 +3
I’ll give them a watch, thanks

loves_grapefruit Apr 16, 2026 +4
Still waiting on the promised movie/TV combo.
4
jesuspoopmonster Apr 16, 2026 +1
The people who made it have said its suppose to be Roland's next journey rather then an adaptation of the books. With this view it probably works better but the movie doesn't make this clear.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for me. It should've been the coolest thing in the world.

World War Z. Imagine the imagery from the Battle of Yonkers or when the military executed their anti-zombie doctrine tactics. Would've been some awesome looking scenes.

evan274 Apr 16, 2026 +9
As a tv show with a shifting POV each episode like the book
9
I_SAID_NO_CHEESE Apr 16, 2026 +3
There's no other way. And it lends itself so perfectly to the format. Each episode starts in present day with the subject being interviewed and then what follows is their recollection. It literally prints money. I dont get how it hasn't happened yet.
3
cofango Apr 16, 2026 +1
>It literally prints money. Does it though?
1
I_SAID_NO_CHEESE Apr 16, 2026 +1

I would like to see World War Z as documentary.
7
Youcantpronouncethis Apr 16, 2026 +3
Get it produced by Ken Burns and narrated by the guy who does the American experience on PBS. Peter Coyote I think is his name. Make it fake, but a serious fake.
3
root_fifth_octave Apr 16, 2026 +13
Earthsea hasn’t been done right yet. I liked the 1984 Dune, even with the incredibly rushed 3rd act. Probably should have been a longer movie or miniseries.
13
Terra_corrupt Apr 16, 2026 +8
Would have been a lovely antidote to the new HBO Potter show if we got A Wizard from Earthsea. Ged's a hard cast though
8
root_fifth_octave Apr 16, 2026 +2
Would have loved that. At least the HP show is a chance to improve on some weaker aspects of the films, but I’m pretty indifferent to that story world at this point. Don’t even know who I’d cast for Ged.
2
jesuspoopmonster Apr 16, 2026 +4
The original cut of the 1984 version was over four hours long and Lynch planned to trim it to three. Then he was told it had to be two hours. I can imagine cutting over half the movies makes it disjointed
4
root_fifth_octave Apr 16, 2026 +1
Makes sense. Seems like it could be done in 3 hours. Still tight, but maybe doable.

teddytwelvetoes Apr 16, 2026 +3
speaking of LeGuin, need a new Lathe of Heaven adaptation starring Pattinson/Cranston
3
longjumpingtote Apr 16, 2026 +16
Denis had 4-5 the time and budget to work with as David. But Dune got the Dune treatment because it’s well known. LOTR the same. If someone with the cache to name their own projects wants to do the strain, barely a decade later, a studio would have to decide if that was even worth the investment. David’s was so long ago that it probably wasn’t a factor given the popularity and status of the source material. TL;DR the Dune treatment requires A-list talent, a massive financial investment, and a property that has been beloved for generations.
16
Chataboutgames Apr 16, 2026 +6
And, candidly, killer execution. Dune is *not* an easy story to adapt. I don't think anyone would read the book and think "easy blockbuster." Did we all *want* it on the big screen? Absolutely. Did anyone think it would be a slam dunk Star Wars? Not if they were thinking it through.
6
MappleStarsSky Apr 16, 2026 +4
Well, it' s also because the Dune movies are not actual good or faithful adaptations of the books, but they are terrific and amazing movies on their own right.
4
loves_grapefruit Apr 16, 2026 +2
Not to mention Denis had a post/LOTR film industry to work with as well. David’s Dune didn’t exist in a world where he could make a 10 hour trilogy.

DJWGibson Apr 16, 2026 +1
When you adjust for inflation it's probably closer to 30% more.

The Stephen King Cinematic Universe. Salem’s Lot, The Stand, the Dark Tower.
11
OrangeFilmer Apr 16, 2026 +8
Isn’t Mike Flanagan working on this right now? With his track record, I think he can pull it off.
8
monsieurxander Apr 16, 2026 +2
Yep, he's written the first season of his Dark Tower show. It's proving to be a long, slow process getting the whole thing started (in part due to hammering out rights issues), but he swears it's still moving forward and his first priority.
2
Intrepid-While-7015 Apr 16, 2026 +6
The Dark Tower topped I Am Legend for my most disappointing adaptation. At least I Am Legend was decent to watch even if it had nothing to do with the book. The Dark Tower had wasted talent and was somehow incredibly boring.
6
poopship462 Apr 16, 2026 +2
Dark Tower took like 15% of the general concept of the book and just did whatever the f***.
2
dingleberryboy20 Apr 16, 2026 +2
Movies based on YA novels (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.) were huge at the time so why not turn an epic apocalyptic fantasy horror into a YA story? What could go wrong?
2
chynky77 Apr 16, 2026 +1
Oh man I would love that. Been reading Stephen King since I was 8
1
samthewisetarly Apr 16, 2026 +1
That seems a bit early 😬
1
chynky77 Apr 16, 2026 +1
Haha I was definitely the only one of my friends that was reading King at that time
1
samthewisetarly Apr 16, 2026 +1
There was a TV series of The Stand not too long ago. It was fine. That story could use the HBO streatment though, and it'd be cool to actually set it in the late 70s/early 80s
1
jesuspoopmonster Apr 16, 2026 +1
I am kind of surprised nobody tried doing that when cinematic universes were the big trend. All of his books take place in the same universe and many cross over. Even if the Dark Tower series ended up being too much to unwind there are still plenty of ways to link them up. Randall Flagg is already the villain in multiple stories. There could be ways to use him as a connecting tissue for others if needed.

Any of Pratchett's work. The old Sky tv shows aren't bad actually, but the BBC "Guards" adaptation was a travesty.

The Mask, the Jim Carrey movie is fine, don’t come for me but i would really like the actual comics adapted someday.

New Line was not prepared for the level of insanity of the actual The Mask.
7
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +2
Would love a fully animated anthology series of *The Mask*, basically have each episode and/or season follow someone new finding the mask. Adapt/reinvent the existing comics and create new stories also.

Of course, adapting the IP this way would be ideal (in addition to other IP that deserve adaptations).
1
Luke_Cold_Lyle Apr 16, 2026 +4
I don't know how it could be done, but some sort of decent adaptation of Ender's Game would be awesome. The movie we did get was extremely disappointing.

Spawn is like culturally nonexistent thesedays, not even knocking on the original but I feel like there's a vision there to tap into
7
silgidorn Apr 16, 2026 +3
Isn't there one in the works?
3
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +2
There *was* technically, or at least Todd McFarlane’s been saying that it has for years. For a while he was saying that he wanted to write/direct/finance it himself (despite not having done any of those things on a movie before) and a while back it was said that it was set up at Blumhouse with Jamie Foxx (who’s too old for the role, personally) as Spawn and Jeremy Renner as Twitch. 4 years ago it was retitled as *King Spawn* and the script was being written by a few of the writers from *Captain America: Brave New World*. But since then? Crickets. Todd’s just insanely protective of the IP and hates having to negotiate with anyone from Hollywood. Which is fair, but it would be better if he were a consultant on a new film and worked with a horror visionary like Mike Flanagan or Scott Derrickson to bring new life to Spawn.
2
calvinwho Apr 16, 2026 +1
Jeremy Renner would be better as Clown/Violator. He wouldn't even have to wear makeup to look puffy and gross.
1
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +2
Interesting pick, could also kind of see him working as Jason Wynn. Jack Black’s been my Violator pick for a while but also think that Dan Fogler could be really incredible in the role.
2
calvinwho Apr 16, 2026 +2
See now, you're being serious and I'm just taking shots at Jeremy Renner. Maybe my wife is right and I should be more sincere
2
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +2
Haha, I mean I figured you were kidding but I genuinely think that he could possibly pull off the role in a transformative way, fat suit, makeup, the whole nine yards.
2
Terra_corrupt Apr 16, 2026 +1
As if to prove my point, I was not even aware of this 🤣

I will say though, the old Spawn cartoon was great.
1
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +1
Been meaning to check it out in full, have seen some clips here and there. Wondering that if a new live-action film never gets off the ground that Spawn could get its own animated DCAU-esque shared universe instead consisting of a main Spawn series and other spin-offs as well

The Strain is based off a trilogy of books by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, not comics which did an okay job of adapting. If you read the books it was clearly meant to be made into either TV or movies. Dune, while I don't argue the new movies are better, the Lynch Dune I would rewatch over them any time. An example is His Dark Materials, terrible movie made into pretty good series.
5
KamiNoItte Apr 16, 2026
That’s a good point. Lynch’s dune is much more re-watchable. Lots of great little small scenes is what you get with better acting and dialogue. The new ones I’ve seen twice and have no need to see again.
0
Bionic_Bromando Apr 16, 2026 +5
I genuinely think the David Lynch Dune movie is better than the Villeneuve one. The dialogue and acting are just better straight up, even if it’s a structural mess that makes no sense if you don’t already know the story. I also like the look of it better, the sets and costumes are just beautiful to look at.
5
KamiNoItte Apr 16, 2026 +2
+1 better dialogue and acting, sets and costumes. Something about the limited palette and cgi - the new one mostly looks kind of a washed out blur with occasional flashes of off palette color or action.
2
nedlum Apr 16, 2026 +1
Sorry, Disney’s *The Black Cauldron* fans, but it was a shallow take on one of the greatest fantasies in children’s literature, *The Chronicles of Prydain*. I’ve read it to both my daughters, and it still holds up, with the minor note that they should perhaps gender swap Coll or something since there’s effectively one girl for most of the series, and she isn’t even in *Taran Wanderer*.  It shouldn’t be big like Dune, but it could be a nice Disney Plus show or something, like Percy Jackson.
1
jesuspoopmonster Apr 16, 2026 +1
I was curious about how the book was different then the movie not realizing it was part of a series. That author did not give a f*** in regards to providing backstory and context.

I'd kinda like someone to take another go at The Hobbit without all the additional material Jackson included (and I know that wasn't completely his fault -- studio decisions mandated the three film format for material that would be stretched with just two movies). But if you asked me who should do it, I'd be at a loss.
2
jesuspoopmonster Apr 16, 2026 +1
Rankin Bass version from the 70s is good
1
JonStrickland Apr 16, 2026 +1
It's pretty good, though the added songs are a bit goofy. I do miss Beorn in that version though. But I much prefer the escape from the elves in the animated version to what Jackson did. My guess is I'm just old and crotchety, and the CGI chase scene stuff doesn't work for me. In fact, the first time I went to see the first film I fell asleep twice, both times during chase sequences. But I'm sure lots of other folks found them thrilling.

I don't think anything deserves the "Dune Treatment" (except maybe for something by Renowned Author Dan Brown) since it involves making an *amazing* adaptation of half of the story followed by basically throwing the overall message and character motivations of key players into a dumpster and then setting it on fire.

Witcher goes without saying, completely botched. The first season kinda had some sense, but after that... Resident Evil has been botched multiple times too. Ridiculously so. Multiple movies and a TV show that had absolutely nothing to do with the source material. Silent Hill had one really good movie and after that fell apart and no one seems to care to make a decent story with it. The fault is always the same: The HR Karen writers that think "I can do this better..." - No Karen, you can't. That's why you are a TV writer and not a best seller in any entertainment medium, stick to the source.

mouse1093 Apr 16, 2026 +2
If it could be done without funding JKR, I would have loved a second crack at the second half of Harry Potter. When David Yates took over for book 5 onward, the faithfulness went out the window and so many core character motivations and developmental scenes were slashed.
2
FrameworkisDigimon Apr 17, 2026 +2
I do wonder what the appetite for Harry Potter will be in 20-30-40 years when it's still around but Rowling's (presumably) shuffled off the mortal coil (she's 60 so 40 years would make her 100). If it's 40 years, the original audience would, by that time, be roughly 65-78 themselves. Prime grandparent age, I guess, but the books would also be a similar vintage to LOTR when the film trilogy was made.
2

Green Arrow. I gave up on the series because it was meh and I couldn't stop getting annoyed he doesn't act like Green Arrow. Where are the sarcastic quips, hypocritical rants, self loathing and calling everybody he disagrees with a fascist?
1
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 16, 2026 +1
The Green Hornet should be revived as another TV series that’s much more faithful than the 2011 film. Keep the period setting but update the action and storytelling in a way that allows it to be darker or more complex when needed but still deeply honors the characters. Speaking of pulp heroes, The Spirit deserves a reboot after Frank Miller’s 2008 abomination. Would kill to see Brad Bird get to make that animated movie he almost made years back. A new take on The Shadow would also be great. Wouldn’t mind a live-action movie but also up for an animated film and/or series.

Yeah, Wheel of Time deserved better. The first season was hamstrung by COVID, Mat's actor leaving, and studio decisions (though even without those, it wouldn't have been perfect). But it showed genuine improvement and growth, to the point where season 3 was genuinely good, and occasionally fantastic. Cancelling a show that is improving in favour of a show which is deteriorating feels bad.
1
MappleStarsSky Apr 16, 2026 -1
The new Dune movies are good, amazing even, but they are also botched adaptations too, and you would know it if you have actually read the books, the second movie is basicaly just its own thing. Do you want faithful adaptations, or good products? Because the phrase "giving the source material the adaptation it deserves" is words I would say for the Dune movies in term of the quality of the movies...but those movies have almost nothing to do with the original books for the themes and messages, or even characters that they carry.
-1
Chataboutgames Apr 16, 2026 +1
I wouldn't call them "botched" at all. No they aren't 100% accurate to what happened in the books, adaptations generally shouldn't be. Chani is a perfect example. Yeah the books didn't have Miss Independent Chani, but is anything lost having her feel like an actual character rather than just Paul's devoted baby machine?
1
Y-27632 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Seriously? You're arguing that nothing is changed/lost by having Chani turn against Paul and (seemingly) walk away by the end of the events of the 1st book? It *should* change tons of things, like the very existence of Leto II and Ghanima. Not to mention potentially Paul's relationship with Irulan, who gets set aside for Chani's sake. It also goes hand-in-hand with turning Stilgar into a complete simp. (and many other poor changes, most of them relating to the final showdown on Arrakis) Dune 2 was an absolute disaster, from an adaptation point of view. A good adaptation can change events or add/remove characters, but it should keep the message of the original and the character motivations intact. Dune 2 does the opposite, 90% of things that happen ostensibly happened in the book, but for completely different (and often nonsensical) reasons. And it's so completely baffling, given how good the 1st movie was.
3
Chataboutgames Apr 16, 2026 -1
You’re assuming that she literally abandoned him and won’t have his children. And the rest is social media melodrama.
-1
Y-27632 Apr 16, 2026 +3
I'm saying that based on her actions in Dune 2, she sure *should*. If she comes back to him and has his children (which it looks like she does) then the whole "Miss Independent" act becomes pointless, so why make the change in the first place? Purely for superficial appeal? And dismissing everything else as "social media melodrama" means you're either completely unfamiliar with the book or didn't get it. I'm not talking about gender and race swaps, or whatever, I'm talking about changing the entire take on Paul as the "chosen one", his self-awareness of what it means, and what he goes through as he struggles with it.
3
MappleStarsSky Apr 16, 2026 +3
I don' t think it' s more about a specific character, but the whole way the adaptation approaches this. The second movie almost glorifies war, but also is distinctly against it... but it still somewhat glorifies, even just because, to depict war in a way that a blockbuster audience would be able to understand, they had to film it in a grandiose way. If you read the books, the books have such massive contempt for even entertaining the concept of w ar, even less for a sacred one, that it is depicted in a massively different and much less flattering way. It' s only about the characters, but the presentation... if you read the books, you will immedetealy get why they' re such different products. The Lynch version, even without his final cut that obviusly makes it hard to fully judge, is actually closer to a more faithful adaptation of the books, despite being a "worse" product.
3
Chataboutgames Apr 16, 2026
I think you're looking at the books with the perspective of someone who has read further in the series. The first book absolutely leans in to how badass Paul and his war are. I'd reserve judgements about glorifying in until we see what they do with the third movie, which really explores the realities of the Jihad. I have read the books, a couple of times (although only as far as God Emperor). I wouldn't call the adaptation "botched" at all.
0
MappleStarsSky Apr 16, 2026 +1
The first book I don' t think leans into that perspective at all, but because in general doing a straight adaptation of DUne would be impossible: those books are meant to work in a written form, translating them in a different format is always going to change them. I' m not saying the movies are bad, I loved watching them lol. But they are not good faithful adaptations, they just can' t, they' re too different and Villeneuve is too much of an auteur to not put his own spin into it.
