It’s a different take for sure. Hopkins is more of your cold, emotionless take of a serial killer.

Clyde is a major reason why its actually good again, but I don't think we should give him all of the credit.
The way this worked was..
Showtime convinced Michael C Hall to return. Michael agreed but he had a hard out written into his contract. Basically they had a specific date where he was just done regardless of what the production needed. Showtime agreed to this on the condition that he do voice overs on their prequel. This is why New Blood started so well and then it ended so f****** strangely and fast. It also featured the death of the main character.
Then showtime started working on Original Sin, which was the prequel to the original series set back in Miami. Michael came on board after production was over to do the voice over stuff and during that few days of recording voiceover he remembered his old friends and how much fun he had back in Miami when the show was originally on the air. He got super f****** nostalgic.
So after a few days of feeling those feelings and recording these voice overs he contacted showtime and said "I may not be done with Dexter afterall". When he said this showtime got visibly aroused. It was actually on the news, google it. So they came up with this idea that Dexter was dying in the hospital, in a coma reliving his past.. which ended up being part of Original Sin.
Then when they started developing what would end up being "Dexter Resurrection" they had some clear notes from Showtime and its fans having seen both versions of Dexter Lite. Basically the fans wanted the blood back, because New Blood was practically PG-13 and Showtime wanted to give this resurrection of their best character some more attention. So they basically killed Original Sin and used the money that they would have paid for Season 2 of that show and roped it into Resurrection. From the first five minutes of that show you can see how much they expanded their budget. Roughly 60% of the show was shot on the streets of New York for crying out loud. Pretty much every character was an expensive famous actor. There were so many different interiors, extras, side characters... they brought f****** two major characters back and a slew of the dead ones. They threw money at this thing all because Michael C Hall gave them a massive money boner.
21
KeremyJylesApr 3, 2026
+4
> So they basically killed Original Sin and used the money that they would have paid for Season 2 of that show and roped it into Resurrection.
Uh no they didn't. Original Sin's renewal *and* cancellation were both announced long after Resurrection was made. You basically used a few known facts to make up this whole story.

And I thought, like a lot of others, that they were dropping that story because the police got the file that should have enough to catch him with. I know people like to say something like “maybe the name was fake” but those files were from Prater the guy who had the files made in secret. So unless the New York ripper was also like Dexter and a serial killer posing as a difference serial killer why would his files be wrong?
11

They werent originally going to make the new york ripper a big deal in season 2 but when they saw how obsessed we were with who the new york ripper was in season 1 they decided to make him a much bigger focus in season 2. I love when showrunners and writers take the fans into account when making a show. Like yes i want them to keep their vision but if fans are liking a specific aspect more than others than its cool if they take that into consideration.

See, what really makes Dexter at it’s best is if he has a compelling antagonist/rival for a given season, imo.
There’s a reason that John Lithgow as Trinity Killer is still perhaps the most critically acclaimed performance in the series, as he was a great contrast to Dexter (as were Ice Truck, Prado, Lilah,).
Really hope we get Cox and Hall flexing their acting chops together.

John Lithgow was ridiculously good in the show. Another actor I think was amazing (but I think people didnt like him so much in the show) was Colin Hanks. His season was mindblowing, the last great season of the main show (but I gotta say Ressurection s1 got me back)
26
_Verumex_Apr 2, 2026
+4
Colin Hanks was great in his role, but S6 is really quite bad despite that.
It all hinges on one big twist that is telegraphed a mile off, and has become very cliche and obvious.
I'm generally quite favourable towards Dexter, but to me S6 and S8 are the only two bad seasons of the show.

I think that's how everyone felt initially but it's genuinely one of my favourite seasons of Dexter, probably behind season 1 and 4
Without spoiling, it leans into all the good things from the original run of Dexter, without going fully in the direction of New Blood (which I will standby is not as bad as the Internet makes it seem)

AFlaccoSeagullsApr 2, 2026

I'm going to disagree about the resurrection not being far fetched. We literally watched him die in New Blood, and the cop checked his pulse and confirmed he was dead, then in Resurrection he's conscious again in the back of the SUV which was hilarious. Not to mention that an episode earlier, the hunter/accomplice guy shot him in the leg and he didn't do jack shit to treat that wound and it was magically healed in a day.
Either way, realistic or not, I'm glad they did Resurrection because it was amazing and I'm very excited for season 2!
3
ChadtheBull_Apr 2, 2026

New blood was bad, resurrection had to clean up that mess in the first episode and close the batista plotline for good one way or another so that the show could escape that fiasco

I was sceptical about the reboot, I avoided watching New Blood since it came out. And then everyone and their mother hyped Ressurections and they were not wrong. It's a fantastic season with a really good ending and I thought New Blood was already really good. Just don't apply too much logic to the ending of it, they wanted the show to continue and it was worth it.
5
lexiebeefApr 2, 2026

I understand but its really good, the season is amazing. Yes, he "ressurects" (there is some what an explanation), but the season is one of the best ever on Dexter, it really holds up. And the cast is STACKED (Peter Dinklage, Kristen Ritter, Uma Thurman, Eric Stonestreet...).

Weird thing to say about a serial killer show but I wish they didn't kill off so many main characters. Angel still had plenty left to his arc. Peter Dinklage's character would have been interesting to keep around in some way. Instead we have more Harrison and Quinn/Masuka I guess.
12
JamStan1978Apr 2, 2026
+13
New Blood kind of backed them into a corner. They couldnt do multiple seasons of a cat and mouse game. It would end up disrespectful to Batistas character. I think they overall handled it very well. His death episode is one of the best episodes in the franchise so at least he made history lol

I think it was Angel's time to go. He had a great run in the show but between New Blood and Ressurection s1, his character's arc got flat. And Peter Dinklage's character was ridiculously good, but tbh, they probably couldnt afford him anymore lol. That's my theory on why every character played by a famous actor died this season, the costs must have been ridiculously high
9
Reddit-dit-dit-di-doApr 2, 2026

I just left a comment mentioning Dinklage’s pay too. That’s definitely part of why.
Hell, when they introduced Neil Patrick Harris as a character and then killed him off in the same episode, I leaned over to my friends and said “Guess they could only afford one episode” lol. But yeah, cost is definitely a huge factor.

If he doesn't identify Dexter's aftershave within moments of meeting him, I won't be impressed.

He’s going to be belligerently farting in everyone’s face, isn’t he?

I was hoping for Bryan Cranston, but this Brian is equally good, if not better

I'm very happy for his success, and he's clearly a great actor, but part of me misses him being the king of character actors.

Is this information we are supposed to know already? Who the New York Ripper is, was a big mystery in season 1 and they left it open. Now its communicated via casting news? Really?

*Resurrection* had no business being as good as it was, especially after *New Blood* was so bad, but damn that season was phenomenal.
Brian Cox as the New York Ripper is going to be SO GOOD.

Oh is Brian Cox willing to work in another Hollywood gig after talking a lot of shit about the US saying he is done with our country?
Fantastic actor. Should probably keep his politics private if he can't stick to his guns for even a full year.

Brian Cox is 79. Dexter will be able to take him out with a stuff breeze.
Hopefully Dexter doesn't repeat his mistake with Trinity, keeping him alive long enough to learn from him.

The best line from his best movie... (fight me)
Brian Cox : Alice, please. Your dog, Alice. It and my appetite are mutually exclusive.
Alice : Well, what's wrong with the dog?
Brian Cox : Simple. He's been licking his a****** for the last three straight hours. I submit to you that there is nothing there worth more than an hour's attention. I should think that whatever he is attempting to dislodge is either gone for good, or there to stay. Wouldn't you agree?

Now hold up a second. Season 2 was set up like he was going to take that yacht and go on a world wide killing tour with those notes. Now we're back in New York and the Ripper is around? Man... I was really hoping they called Season 2 "Dexter : Hunting Season".
