Bringing back the listnook.com beta program

We're happy to announce that we're [bringing back](https://www.listnook.com/r/listnook.com/comments/8t2th/weve_added_a_few_new_things_wed_like_you_test_on/) the listnook.com beta testing program. Anyone on listnook can opt-in to become a beta tester, and receive early access to listnook.com features before we launch them to everyone. We'll be using /r/beta as the community hub for the beta program, where we'll announce new beta features and give beta testers space to provide feedback. There are two ways to participate in the beta program: * If you're **logged in** to your listnook account, you can opt-in as a beta tester in your [preferences](https://www.listnook.com/prefs/), under "beta options". This will automatically subscribe you to /r/beta, so that you'll receive the latest information about new beta features. * If you're **logged out**, you can visit [beta.listnook.com](https://beta.listnook.com/) to see beta features. Yes! Spoiler tags! I've been [advocating for this](https://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins/comments/oqnxk/on_behalf_of_the_entire_book_and_tvshow_sublistnook/) for a long time. The simplest, most elegant solution would be to allow moderators to upload a thumbnail image for each linkflair. On the frontpage, the thumbnail would be replaced with the moderator uploaded one. So if we created a "spoiler" link flair, we could have a "spoiler" thumbnail for it that would appear for users on the frontpage. If we have book spoilers and tv show spoilers, we can have thumbnails for those too. All of these would also block out the picture thumbnail itself, which frequently contains spoilers.

If listnook was programmed in a logical fashion, it really could (should) be that simple. I've worked on several aggregators over the past 20 years, and adding something as simple as a flag, really would only take about 20 minutes, if not less. But then again, most coders shouldn't be.

Whatever happened to sitewide spoiler tags in comments? Wasn't that in the works at some point? Everyone uses this hackish CSS broken link syntax right now that's pretty much the definition of not user friendly, and which varies widely from sub to sub, and which doesn't always work right on mobile.

The `[Spoiler text](#s)` syntax is converted to `Spoiler text`, which is a link to the ID `s` on the current page. Sublistnooks use this to change the style of links equaling `#s` (CSS selector is `a[href="#s"]`) which is usually giving them a black background until hovered.

It can be either `/s` or `#s`, but it depends on how the sublistnook implements it and the effects of clicking on them changes. For example, if you were on the listnook home page and clicked a spoiler tag, `/s` would take you to `listnook.com/s` (takes you off the page you're on to a 404) while `#s` would attempt to take you `listnook.com/#s` (the same page, but scrolls to wherever the ID `s` is on the page). Four spaces is for non-inline block code, while \` (backquote) is used for inline code.

FYI, the better system is \[Spoiler](#s "Spoiler text here") That puts the spoiler as alt text. So even if you aren't on the sublistnook CSS it still works as a spoiler. It also works, to an extent, in your inbox this way. That also works on listnook is fun (the other might but I haven't tested)

How do you run your programs/projects anyway? I've always wondered. Great question - right now we're using it more as a soft launch for planned features, especially new features. We're going to try to launch stuff pretty regularly to beta, although I can't promise an exact schedule. So, for example, minor bug fixes or small UI improvements are either silently fixed, or mentioned in our [live thread](https://www.listnook.com/live/ukaeu1ik4sw5), which we try to keep up-to-date with every change. Larger changes that are user-facing get mentioned in /r/changelog - an example is [Q&A sort](https://www.listnook.com/r/changelog/comments/342y8k/listnook_change_new_comment_sorting_options/), which is definitely user-facing but not likely something that every user or even most users will care about. The largest features are reserved for a blog post and /r/blog - things like the [launch of listnook live](http://www.listnookblog.com/2014/07/announcing-listnook-live.html) and [embeddable comments](http://www.listnookblog.com/2015/03/announcing-embeddable-comment-threads.html). Hope that helps clarify how we do things - of course, we've grown a lot over the last year as a company, and we're continually learning, so we'll continue to experiment with the right ways to communicate changes with you all. **tl;dr We launch things in the appropriate venue based on the size of the feature. Beta will mostly be used for testing out planned features but may have more experimental stuff in the future.**

Lol yeah for being a highly used open source project, listnook has some questionable design choices. I've always wondered why they don't make it a single page app. They already have an API in place, and a SPA would make for a faster experience for end users, while being lighter on listnook's servers (no more "listnook took too long to load this page for you" nonsense). Having the ability to upload images directly to the site would be nice. Also I know they're working on a mobile stylesheet but they're pretty f****** late on that. And they still don't have an official general purpose listnook app on any phone platform. I think the real reason change happens so slowly is that listnook is scared of major redesigns angering a bunch of people and starting a mass exodus. I wasn't around in the Digg days but from what I've heard that's what made people leave Digg and go to Listnook.

someone else already pretty much has a listnook SPA, it's called [reditr](http://reditr.com/). I'm a bit loathe to promote it, given their keyword stuffing mention of RES puts them *above* RES in the Chrome webstore search results, but whatever, they seem like nice people and it's an interesting app. The thing about an SPA is that the idea of sublistnook CSS pretty much dies unless the SPA's markup is still consistent (and preferably matches listnook's existing markup, or all sublistnook styles would need to be rewritten from scratch) ... not an easy problem to solve.

Speaking of body classes, they'd be nice to see more of. I have some per-user styling (this was before the CSS update, but the fact that they're now keeping it gold-only still gives it a point) adding some per-user css, and now that we have that aforementioned CSS update something indicating the user is using another sub's CSS might be useful (I feel like I had a more useful case somewhere but can't find/remember it atm, just piping in that body classes are useful and fun)

I miss /r/listnook.com so much. I'm not an extremely frequent poster but I post my fair share. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I simply wanted to address listnook about something.. where my post wasn't funny, it wasn't a question, wasn't a picture, and it wasn't generally related to any specific topic that someone would make a sublistnook for. /r/listnook.com was a necessary catch-all for content that doesn't really fit any specific category, and you want to reach out to a lot of people. It was the perfect "general" section. Being a catch-all is probably what killed it.. when you can put anything there and reach a lot of users, it doesn't give people a lot of incentive to use the sublistnook system which reaches far fewer users but keeps content more focused. /r/listnook.com was the TellListnook solution to /r/AskListnook (/r/TellListnook exists btw, but nobody uses it)

I know it there was a good reason for shutting it down. For those not in the know, it's a long story but the TL;DR of it is that the moderators of /r/listnook.com were (and still are) the admins of Listnook, and as Listnook grew it became too difficult for them to manage the site as a whole and moderate a sublistnook by themselves, so they shut it down. But I wonder if it's possible to make an equivalent sublistnook now and have it moderated normally, maybe as a default.

Again, I think there's more to the story than what I said. Some of the old timers here are probably more knowledgable on the subject than I am. The reason /r/listnook.com no longer exists is because it gives the community an easy way to mobilize. On every default sub, you can find some pretense to remove something because it breaks the rules. For example, you can't post about an /r/trees power struggle on /r/TwoXChromosomes because it's off-topic. /r/listnook.com, in theory, only removed spam. So it had to go, because the admins don't want the community to be able to organize behind a common cause. There is no default sublistnook for talking to listnook about listnook.

Admins don't want to do the unglorified work of moderating and they would have to move their "admin-mail" somewhere else if they opened the sub for submitting. Also, they'd have to choose some users to become mods there which would instantly make them the most powerful mods on the site.

I have no idea what "vote brigade" I would have been a part of and you don't have to believe me but I have never been a part of anything that even vaguely resembles a "vote brigade". Anyways, the whole thing stinks to me. Like a canned response. The admin version of "yeah, our bad". Multiple years on listnook and I get my 1st shadowban "accidentally" within a day and a half of my most viral "How Listnook Was Destroyed". ……………………………………. It wasn't always like this. A few years ago, there were just as many disagreements and differences of opinion on listnook, but they were REAL. And the site was still a democracy. People voted and things swung from side to side, everybody learned in the end. Now we have a completely one-sided mess that pretends to be democratic but is quickly becoming the Fox News of the internet. Because IMO, the decline of a lot of the defaults subs can be traced back to the removal of /r/listnook.com. It did a good job of attracting general interest posts so people didn't try to force content that didn't fit on to other subs.

It was frequently used to call out shit mods, shady sub-listnook practices, and so on. that sounds neat and all but i can't for the life of me think of an example or two that would differentiate the two experiences.

Ummm snoovavatars, themes, listnooknotes, etc. Anything frivolous that isn't a necessity or a direct improvement to the site. You can't tell me fixing search and adding an avatar are equal in their value. One benefits the entire site, the other one is just something extra that some might find cool

Exactly haha. Except the way listnook approaches it isn't, "pay extra for these useless features" It's more like "help support us and as a reward have some useless features." Themes is the first gold exclusive feature that I can actually see people paying for gold just to get. And even that is a stretch (since you can use stylish like you said)

Since you're using python, is there a python framework for managing all the different switches/experiments when A/B testing features ?. Airbnb has something called terbuchet, which "launches" features at users and you can do things like "expose this feature to 1% of users", I was wondering if there was something similar for django or maybe something more generic, how are you guys building it ?.

guys, fix the mobile website first. it often asked me to sign in more than once. I would be writing a long comment, and then hit send, and it would bring up the message to "allow" the listnook mobile app or whatever. Losing my comment when I hit okay
