For those who don't know about the situation, [Indonesia annexed West Papua following a fake referendum.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_Free_Choice)

Ah yes, the famous “Act of Free Choice,” in which a tiny number of people were hand-picked by the government to vote at gunpoint, and UN observers were forbidden from speaking to indigenous people. It’s insane that the UN put its seal of approval on this, and that West Papua has never been added to their (already debatable) list of non-self-governing territories

> It’s insane that the UN put its seal of approval on this >Ortiz-Sanz wrote in his report that "an act of free choice has taken place in accordance with Indonesian practice”, but not confirming that it was in accordance with international practice as the Act of Free Choice had required They didn't. They said it meets Indonesian requirements, not international requirements; this is diplomatic speak for an unfair vote.

From the article: “British companies and investors are profiting from gold mining, gas extraction and palm oil plantations in West Papua, while the British government supports the Indonesian military through arms exports and training. For the West Papuan people, this entanglement has caused repression, extrajudicial killings, mass displacement and the destruction of ancestral lands and ecosystems. With several political movements seeking independence and the international community largely looking away, the crisis shows no signs of ending until West Papuans are given control over their own resources.”
