Brother Bear's Transformation

Posted by Mammoth-North-9380

So, anyone remember Brother Bear? The movie where the MC kills a bear as revenge for it killing his brother? So the spirits turn him into a bear as punishment so he can learn the error of his ways. So a fitting punishment was to take away his humanity. Yeah, I always had a problem with plot points like this. I tend to not enjoy cruel and/or unusual punishments even in fiction, and this is a clear example of one. The idea is to have the character look at the perspective of the thing they hate, but this can easily just lead to the character loosing what sense of humanity they had and wind up just as bad as or even worse than how they were before. That would actually be an interesting story, but I haven't seen any media with this plot point go that route. I get that Kenai killed a bear cubes mother, so I guess that could warrant harsher consequences, but A. He didn't know that the bear was a mother, and B. The only reason he killed her is because she killed his brother 1st, who didn't even do anything wrong. Sure, the film could also be trying to say "revenge bad," but the brother getting killed goes unacknowledged, especially since the 2 deseased spirtis are all buddy-buddy at the end of the film. And like, doesn't that look kinda problematic? I could buy the brother forgiving the bear, but if the bear's actions go unacknowledged while Kenai's don't, it kinda looks lopsided and unfair. If these were less salient animals, then fine, but the movie makes it not the case, as the bears have personalities, culture, and conversations. Although, I guess she does die, so, eh? I also think this presents a missed opportunity. Throughout the film, Kenai learned that bears fear humans just as much as humans fear bears, but wouldn't it be interesting if the bear mother bear learned the same thing in reverse, given she killed Kenai's brother? I feel that would give great balance to the theme, I've seen similar concepts done in other things like Hilda, where the mother troll says that all species have good and bad individuals. Also, the brother is a F@#$ING JERK!!! Aside from turning Kenai into a bear, this action caused the 3rd brother to think that the same bear killed Kenai too, and thus tries to kill bear Kenai in revenge, not realizing it's his brother. Even if you want to argue that the brother isn't responsible for how the youngest reacted, Kenai is put into life-threatening danger MORE THAN ONCE and the brother just does NOTHING!!! We see him shapeshift into a hawk to watch over Kenai, so why doesn't he try to stop the youngest brother? To have Kenai see what the mother bear saw when he killed her? Well, A. That won't matter much anymore if Kenai ends up dying as a result, and B. This could end up triggering Kenai to fight back in self-defense, which could lead to the brother getting hurt or worse killed! So this could have lead to somebody else dying! Real great plan, there, brother spirit! \*Sigh\* So, that was my rant. What do you think?

A bear is a bear. She is protective and territorial. The brothers invaded her territory and she attacked them to protect her cubs. As higher order beings, humans had the responsibility to respect the nature - which they did not. Hence, their actions were punished.

You know what? That at least is true.

i always found brother bear to be a bit messy in its themes. like, it tries to convey forgiveness and understanding, but the execution just ends up being kind of lopsided and leaves you with more questions than answers, especially with the brother's role. the whole spirit dynamic is wild, and honestly, it could've been so much deeper if they addressed the consequences better.

Kenai wanted to kill the bear before it killed his brother. Instead of taking responsibility for his mistake, he chose to blame a bear for acting like a bear. It's not that he didn't know the bear was a mother, he didn't care if the bear was a mother or not.

Yeah, that is pretty bad. Even worse of a motivation than revenge since at least then there's some argument for justice, even if it's a bad one. I still think the "turn him into a bear" thing is messy at best for the other reasons I stated above, as this could have easily gone wrong.

Brother Bear was such a good movie. It came out at the perfect time for me. I love Bernie Mac, and I remember that Jeremy Suarez, who played Jordan Thomkins on The Bernie Mac Show was in the movie, and he played the bear cub Koda. That's Ko-Da.

No one tell this guy about the "turn the other cheek" parable

It’s so weird to me that you would type all that out but can’t be bothered to write main character, lol
