"Strangled" sounds terminal, but Margaux Mirkin, the 70-year-old heiress, is not dead.
> After the incident, Kristen Stavola, executive director of We Are Laurel Canyon, spoke to NBC4.
>
>"She's pretty shaken up, as anyone would be after being assaulted in your home and watching your valuables get stolen and driven away," Stavola said.

This reminds me how the punishment of hanging had to be rewritten to "hung until death", after a man sentenced to hanging survived it and they had to let him go free.

Except that the word strangle means "to choke to death by compressing the throat with something (such as a hand or rope)" similar to electrocution which also specifically has death in the definition
18
BygmesterFinneganApr 25, 2026
+10
If you look there is actually more than one official definition
10
Lads-09Apr 25, 2026
+10
Very few dictionaries have strangle defined without killing (I checked 9 before I found 1) and even then it's a secondary definition. That suggests that it's a colloquial definition added due to common usage. Someday "to lie" might be listed under cap in dictionaries as well. Words collect new meanings over time because they are used incorrectly by people for so long that it becomes correct. Again, similar to electrocution which, I won't check, but I'm certain has a colloquial definition "to shock" in a dictionary somewhere.
Tldr: we're both kinda right

Assault, battery, attempted murder, and if you use something as a ligature then you can add "with a deadly weapon" in most jurisdictions.
4
hamsandsteamApr 26, 2026
+1
Assault/ assault with a deadly weapon doesn’t actually mean you touched the other person though, they’re probably looking to potentially lay an attempted murder charge if they catch em.
So many legal terms sound silly, “on his person” is always one that makes me lol.
1
StrategicCarryApr 26, 2026
+1
You would charge with all three to raise the chance of getting a conviction. Some combination of attempted murder, battery/aggravated assault (with a deadly weapon) and regular assault (with a deadly weapon).
1
hamsandsteamApr 26, 2026
+2
“Assault by force likely to cause great bodily injury”.
[I’ve dealt with this division before](https://imgur.com/a/vQcRCU1) and the DA assigned to the case charged the defendant way differently to what the cops initially told me.
*Offense: cnt 1 f PC 664/211” = Count 1 felony attempted robbery* yet a weapon was involved and way more went down lol. Gets confusing!

It doesn't help that it is being handled by the homicide division, which for the LAPD is the squad that handles all high profile crimes. Most other police departments have changed the name to major crimes or something similar.

Strangulation is death by constriction of the neck. Doing the same act without killing someone is "throttling." Like the difference between getting shocked and being electrocuted is the death.

We had an English who had a champion bloodline. The breeder told us not to post anything on social media for the first month or so, and to be exceptionally vigilant about who has access to our dog while he was a little, adorable puppy. There were (15 years ago) crime rings that targeted bulldog pups.
The really good breeders (like the one we used) are very strict about who they'll let their dogs go home with. The people buying these stolen pups were usually people who couldn't qualify for one thru regular means.

People are goddamn animals moreso than the dogs sometimes. Used to live in a two family house decades ago where the family downstairs from us owned a gorgeous purebred Chow-Chow, some fuckers stole it right out of their yard one day. Unfortunately in a way, the Chow-Chow was extremely socialized so it wouldn't have gone after the intruders like a typical Chow-Chow might, so they were able to steal it without much issue. This was unfortunately before microchipping really became a thing, so there was basically no chance to ever find it again.

Seems like he was talking about the fact that it made national news. Not every home invasion makes national news. Although, imo, the national reporting in the case of this home invasion probably comes more from the fact that she’s the heiress to Budget Rent a Car, and less from her money.
“Rich lady gets strangled in home invasion” doesn’t sound as good as “Budget Rent a Car Heiress strangled in home invasion.”

I didn’t hear about that one and you’re wrong, it is true that these cases only make the news because the people have money. Sure, they sprinkle in some poors when bad things happen to them, but the news largely reports on the wealthy.

More than anything else: crime is correlated to poverty. Decrease poverty, decrease crime.
78
GenChadTApr 25, 2026
+28
Poverty is on the rise. As more people start to go hungry and stare homelessness in the face it'll continue to drive poverty and desperation and as a result property crime and violent crime are going to sharply increase. If you think you've seen a crackhead do some crazy shit for Crack wait until you see what a hungry person will do to feed themselves or their kids. I honestly don't believe most Americans are ready for it. Those who lived through the 70s-90s will have some understanding but IMO the next "crime wave" is going to be worse for a multitude of reasons which are unlikely to be addressed by the conservatives in power. Not only that, criminals here are better armed now than they ever were back then.. Instead of knives and 38s it's going to be ARs and glocks with switches.
