Bull(CBS) S1E21 : Disappointing Writing?

Posted by CharacterPatience481

I've recently started watching Bull and though I understand a lot of the writing is not the most intelligent nor are Jason's acts the most ethical, I find the show interesting and fun to watch. The anticipation towards a previous case of Benny's was built over a few episodes and I was honestly excited to see how it was resolved but it is somehow the worst writing the show has done yet!? I absolutely hate the way J.P. is written, I hate the way Jason seems to be acting in such a crucial time, there seem to be so many useless details the show spends time on (like JP's restaurant, her waking up at 3 in the morning, Bull's fascination with all of it etc.) instead of making the case interesting or involving the characters from the case into play; not to mention it feels like a man wrote JP's role, like why does every successful women seem to be this object of desire in the show, she doesn't have an aura of an intelligent, well rounded women but instead seems to be reduced to quirky traits and misplaced behaviours that aren't in harmony. Am I tripping about this? What were your thoughts on this episode?

This show had a fair amount of problems with the way women were treated behind the scenes in real life so don’t expect them to be written well. It’s why you’ll notice some of the women suddenly get written off.

Hey Op. Remember Eliza Dushku? She played Faith on Buffy. CBS felt they needed a female lead on the show to have a little more drama and back and forth with the lead. So they hired her. Michael Weatherly felt that she was going to take his show from him. So he began harassing her. Like a lot. He broke props she was supposed to use on screen, he repeatedly demeaned her in front of the cast and crew, he got the crew to turn on her, theres a rumor he peed all over her trailer, he began simulating sex and urinating on her between takes... eventually it got so bad that she went to CBS about it. There was a court case, somehow her side of the defense got unedited recordings and audio of some of the shit he was doing on set to her. It was so damning that CBS swept it under the rug and paid her what she would have made for 8 seasons on this show. You shouldn't support this show, the actor or anything revolving around NCIS. Hes a f****** terrible massive creep. Did the same thing to Jessica Alba on Dark Angel.

I don't remember any specific episode. But I do remember Freddy Rodriguez being very good in the court scenes. I've heard there were issues about him but imo he carried the show.

That JP storyline was such a mess! The whole buildup made it seem like we were getting this complex character with real depth, but then she just became another "quirky successful woman who's also mysteriously attractive" trope. The restaurant subplot felt like filler - like they had 5 minutes to kill and just threw in random scenes of her doing mundane things. What really got me was how they handled her professional side versus the romantic angle. One minute she's supposed to be this brilliant legal mind, next minute she's written like she stepped out of some romantic comedy where her main purpose is to make Bull act weird and distracted. The 3am scenes especially felt pointless - was that supposed to show she's dedicated or just give Bull another excuse to obsess over her? The whole thing reminded me why I sometimes struggle with procedural shows when they try to do character development. They build up these intriguing backstories but then don't know how to pay them off without falling back in tired stereotypes. Benny deserved better resolution to his past case than whatever that was.
