Look down the neck from the headstock to check for bowing or twisting. Check the action at the 12th fret. Look for cracks in the top especially around the bridge. Sight along the bridge to check for rotation. Play every fret on every string. Budget instruments are fine for beginners but a setup will improve any guitar.
