Cairo goes dark as Egypt struggles to cope with fall out from Iran war | Africanews
Normally bustling with activity until the early hours of the morning, the streets of Cairo have gone dark. Soaring fuel costs have pushed the Egyptian government to issue a month-long early-closing order. Now shops are shuttered at 9pm during the week and 10pm on weekends.

It's insane that they haven't invested more in solar energy after all these years.

We are a reactionary society not a proactive one.

That's because the rich and moronic poor parts of populations don't want their "tax dollars" going to anything that doesn't directly benefit them, immediately.

This is not the first time something like this happen.

Good reaction to this would be capitlize on all the solar rich landscape your country has.

Egypt is a full on corrupt military junta. There is no investment beyond the standard authoritarian monuments

Military juntas are not well known for being the best at long term planning

They are such a poor country. I visited last winter and it is poorer than I could have imagined.

Yeah Cairo was genuinely an awful city to visit when I went. Couldn’t wait to get out. Desert was cool though.

It’s like our government officials f*** our future over backhanders

How many solar panels would you need to cover the pyramids? How much energy would that provide their country?

In the grand scheme of things not very much.

Extremely misleading title, egypt is asking non Essential/ non touristic places to close by 9 pm. This is in an effort to reduce energy consumption. This is an approach that led them to not increase fuel prices and try to maintain inflation. Supermarkets/hospitals/touristic places/pharmacies etc... all are operating 24/7 as usual

You would think that they would have the brains to use solar but no 💀

Wouldnt want the people to get too independent and be able to communicate without the goverments power to shut of electricity. There is a reason Egypt is still building New Cairo, where the new government places are, and it is built to limit personal mobility as well as ensure you can deal with any uprising by having very vide streets for your military.

I meant government controlled solar plants

Reminds me of this quote: "Climate change will manifest as a series of disasters viewed through phones with footage that gets closer and closer to where you live until you're the one filming it." I think it applies here if you change a word or 2 or extrapolate.

I'm a little concerned that reporters and writers might want to avoid using the term "Fallout" for a few more days.

This is a great depression on steroids because it will be accompanied with extreme inflation.

How old are you? The last one ended in the 1930s.

Lovely a second great depression in my lifetime I hope we all can agree COVID counts

Zanadar Apr 7, 2026 +35
No? Not even a little? COVID was really bad, not arguing that, but comparing it to the Great Depression? Unemployment did not hit 25%, GDP did not fall by half, hundreds of thousands of Americans did not suffer from malnutrition, massive shantytowns of the homeless were not erected, it's just an insane comparison to make.

We have to compare everything to the most extreme things today to feel anything apparently
