What's scary is there are sheriffs all over the country have been taught how to start and engage in these investigations. I'm surprised that more haven't done what he's doing. It's the constitutional sheriff movement. [https://statesunited.org/resources/factsheet-constitutional-sheriff/](https://statesunited.org/resources/factsheet-constitutional-sheriff/)

The terrible authoritarian thing that people keep saying "is coming" is actually already here, and has been for a while. It's just continuing to grow in strength.

The good news is that the Republicans have been doing all possible dirty tricks at the polls for many years and it only ever managed to keep them competitive, not dominant. So don't despair over all their cheating.
17
snarkiest_ofsharks 1 day ago +16
That’s only going to convince them to cheat harder. They haven’t really seen any repercussions whenever they’ve crossed the line, so why wouldn’t they continue to cross a bit further every time

Competitive enough to elect an orange faced, racist, misogynist, felon, adulterer, adjudicated rapist, twice impeached and likely PDFfile President while controlling SCOTUS and both houses of Congress. So I’d say they’ve been pretty effective.

This is why the US should do away with the multi-teared policing model at the Sub-National level. Bring all police under the control of the state governments like it is here in Australia. Let the cities/counties hire a few staff for stuff like code enforcement and stuff like that but nothing more. Now, our coppers aren’t perfect but I’ve never heard of one of our police commissioners doing shit like this. Also, just completely unify the courts under the state level judiciary. No more of the electing judges bs.

I hadn't heard this term until I saw the 5th season of Fargo. My wife turned ep 1 on one day and we didn't realize it was season 5. Thankfully, that show's seasons are distinct from each other. Also, season 5 was some of the best TV I've ever seen. Back to topic, I read up on the movement. The breadth of this idiotic group of dipshittery was far wider than I'd have guessed. I was both surprised and not surprised, but fully disappointed.

> It's the constitutional sheriff movement. let me guess, these guys tend to be close friends of "sovereign citizens"
15
phylter99 2 days ago +14
I don't know. That would make sense, I guess. There are a lot of things I'm finding out that are more coordinated than we realize. It's not just some randos deciding to do these things on their own. The right talks about a deep state, and I'm not so sure there isn't such a thing on the right.
14

Gaslight Obstruct Project, sounds about right

thisvideoiswrong 2 days ago +6
I mean, I learned the term during the Obama administration, from people talking about why he wasn't more successful in reigning in the CIA. The FBI has never had a Democrat as Director, and among many other crimes famously attempted to blackmail Martin Luther King Jr. into suicide. Oh, and they intentionally torpedoed Hillary Clinton's campaign in favor of a Russian operative. Nothing was ever done about all the people who illegally took power after Reconstruction by lynching their opponents, and then proceeded to write Jim Crow laws. The Constitution itself was written to give disproportionate power to rural conservatives, particularly the rich ones. However you want to define the term exactly, it's definitely there.

43
wrosecrans 1 day ago +2
Yeah the headline calls it an "investigation." But it's "a candidate in a race abused the powers of his current office and stole ballots in an election he lost." And if that were being covered like it should be, a lot more people would appreciate what's happening.

Thankfully, this guy fabricated the evidence of a crime which he then used as a justification to seize ballots and other related materials. This cannot be allowed. The other equally as horrible thing is that they now have the voter data from those ballots which can then be used by the federal government for a number of nefarious reasons. There was absolutely no valid reason for him to seize those ballots. Arrest him, prosecute him, and make sure no one even thinks about doing this again unless there is undeniable proof of a widespread conspiracy to commit voter fraud.

WasteProfession8948 2 days ago +15
What data on voters would they have from ballots? Aren’t the votes separated from identities at the time votes are cast?
15
Im_with_stooopid 2 days ago +18
If they are absentee ballots they likely require a signature on the envelope and that would make the vote identifiable. There's also a voter roll where the numbered ballot is tied to the voters names. Not sure if he obtained the voter roll or just the ballots.
18
WasteProfession8948 2 days ago +14
Those are separated from the actual ballots before the votes are even tallied. There is no identifying info in the ballots themselves.
14
Im_with_stooopid 2 days ago +8
Interesting. So the. They validate the signature to what they have on file and then put the ballot in a separate bin for later tallying?
8
WasteProfession8948 2 days ago +16
Correct. Absentee and mail in ballots are afforded the same privacy as voting in person. Many people erroneously believe that info on how people voted is tracked/recorded. It is not.
16
thisvideoiswrong 2 days ago +3
To be exact, absentee ballots will always come in several pieces. In NJ, we have a mailing envelope that's all USPS sees. Inside of that there's another envelope with a large flap on it. That flap is where you write your signature and everything else. It's perforated so it can be torn off of the envelope once it's been checked. That leaves a totally anonymous envelope. And inside that envelope is the actual ballot.
3
Astrogod07 1 day ago +1
That’s interesting, in California and Colorado, I think we just sign the outside of the envelope

Additional warrants expanded the scope to seize “ALL OF THE MATERIAL related to the 2025 Special Election” when the registrar initially provided only a partial set (e.g., 13 pallets). So he has the entire registrar. Which contains all voter registration information. Sorry I should have specified that he doesn’t just have the ballots.

Stop calling it an investigation, this gives it validity. It was always a farse, he was trying to see what he can get away with like Trump. That way when loses in November, he can just claim fraud and steal ballots again. Arrest the f***** now.

Yeah, but he's got about as much chance at that as I have to become the Prime Minister of Australia. Trump could put any nutjob who hands him a big mac in as AG and Congress would ok it.
2
wwhsd 2 days ago +2
Actually, because in the jungle primary we have there’s a chance that the election will be between this guy and the Republican that Trump endorsed. The primary for Governor is an open primary and the two candidates with the most votes move on to the general election. We’ve got so many established Democrats running that there’s a danger of them spreading the vote too thin between them and ensuring that there is a Republican Governor elected in 2026.

I heard this discussed recently and the justification was that there were something like 45k more votes tallied for Riverside county than there were ballots cast, right? I think if there is evidence that this did happen, I think someone should check it out, right? Maybe the courts are ruling he didn't have the authority to do this or something... that I don't know.
-30
wwhsd 2 days ago +22
There was a local activist group (who also believe that Trump had the 2020 election stolen from him) that came up with that number. The official audits came up with a discrepancy of 103 ballots. That’s 0.016% of the votes in the county. This same Sheriff apparently also “investigated” the 2022 and 2024 elections and is currently running for governor. It might just be a coincidence, but he launched his investigation while Trump was deciding which Republican candidate would get his endorsement. The 2025 election had only one ballot question, and that was whether or not to allow the state to redistrict in response to the redistricting that was done in Texas.
