can any of y’all please recommend me a movie where the FEMALE protagonist is overly obsessed with a man who doesn’t want her?

Posted by hachinanalove

for a while now i’ve been searching for a movie where a woman falls in love with, let’s say the idea, of this certain man she doesn’t even know, yet she builds a deep obsessive connection towards him. (believing he could save her from her own troubles) she is very unstable because she cannot accept the fact he rejected her due to his personal reasons. i’ve seen this scenario a lot but with male lead so i was wondering if something like this exists with the roles switched? (bonus points if it’s a new wave french movie)

Young Adult 2011 movie starring Charlise Theron. She is the protagonist and is obsessed with a boy she went to high school with decades earlier, who is now married.

I just moved to a new town after 15+ years in the old one. “I have friends, I TOTALLY have friends” has been on repeat in my head as I try to make new friends.

>“I have friends, I TOTALLY have friends” has been on repeat in my head as I try to make new friends. Better than *Settle for Me* or *You Stupid B***** or *You're My Best Friend (And I Know I'm Not Yours)*.

How do I know he loves me? It's the little things Little compliments here and there that I secretly stockpile in my woman-brain I can live for days off a single (You really listen to me) I'm like a s*** fashion-cactus Livin' from compliment to compliment Hint to hint Storin' them in my body through long periods of drought I may look dry, but if you cut me open you'll find only water inside Incidentally that's also a useful fact for how to survive in the desert But how do I know he loves me? I guess the only way to prove it is with abstract symbolism He gives me love kernels Each little crumb another tasty clue Love kernels 'Cause if you read between the lines he's sayin' "I love you" Love kernels Save those kernels up to make a bowl of popcorn Love kernels A handful is the proper serving anyway I know when you say, "I wanna go to Colorado sometime" It means you're thinkin' 'bout the future with me I know a 3am text means I was in your dreams before you woke up to pee (It's a 3am sup text) And I know you care when you say "I'm going to a movie tonight, my friend bailed, wanna come?" It means I'm the most important person in his life Next to his friend (But he's known his friend since he was like five So that's saying a lot) I'd do anything for those love droplets Like a hamster in a cage! Slurp slurp Love droplets Each a letter on a page in the novel of our love Love droplets Fallin' down from the sky And when I mix it in with the tears I cry it makes a Full glass of water God I'm thirsty after all that popcorn I'll be patient Until the droplets become a river that needs a dam I'll be patient Until the kernels rain down like candy on Shaquille O'Neal In the movie Kazaam Whatever you got, baby, I'll take it, baby (What you up to today?) I'll take it "Your house smells like lemon) I'll take it (Where is my phone?) It's a stretch but I'll take that too I'll take all your love kernels This video ate up our production budget Love kernels We used up literally every cent Love kernels Darryl is now played by a broom on a stand But like your love kernels We'll do our best with what we have

Is that the one that Sandra Bullock won the Razzie for in the same year she won an Oscar as well?
40
jupfold Mar 28, 2026 +29
She did. To be fair, she still acted the hell outta that role. Terrible movie, but she 100% gave it her all
29
A_Polite_Noise Mar 28, 2026 +23
Same weekend! She won the Razzie one night then won the Oscar the next night (for *The Blind Side*). And she showed up to get the Razzie and give out DVDs of All About Steve: https://youtu.be/ghS98BKy29Q?si=qroAbnhHtdbXQ0Ru
23
Aliensinmypants Mar 28, 2026 +6
Holy hell that's funny. She was great in both honestly, but it's funny that with all the context now The Blind Side might deserve the razzie

This is probably the highest quality example in the thread. Solid acting and production values, plus it doesn’t really villainize or caricature anyone. Plus the musical number is iconic
32
PemCorgiMom Mar 28, 2026 +16
Yeah, I was literally the first movie that came to mind when I read that post. I love that the movie sympathizes with the Julia Robert’s character without condoning her behavior and >!also gives her a “happy” ending without giving her the ending she wants.!<
16
Roland_T_Flakfeizer Mar 28, 2026 +9
Maybe not the ending she wanted, but the ending she needed. I genuinely think she would have been miserable if she’d actually gotten together with what’s his face. Some women are just happier with a gay best friend than with a straight romantic partner.
9
veryverythrowaway Mar 28, 2026 +7
The kinds of women who would do what her character did *need* a gay best friend. Not because they’d talk her out of it, but because gay men deserve great entertainment just like everyone else.

Hootron9000 Mar 28, 2026 +151
While You Were Sleeping is about a woman who obsesses over a guy in a coma xD

I mean, who wouldn’t obsess over Peter Gallagher and his eyebrows?
32

It’s easy not to when young Bill Pullman is awake and flirting with you.

I thought that film was hilarious. I was entering puberty though......
11
lrkt88 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I love Uma, but the casting was bad. If they chose a petite, bubbly woman I think the juxtaposition would’ve landed better as comedy. Reese Witherspoon for example I think could’ve salvaged it a bit.

I suppose Legally Blonde fits that description at the start of the movie. She went to law school to get her ex back, who didn't want her because she didn't match his aesthetic. Luckily she managed to take off the rose coloured glasses and actually knuckle down to her studies.

***Fleabag*** is an amazing show written and acted by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It's not a scary obsession, she just really loves a man that she cannot have. It's charming and very sad at the same time. Fair warning, you'll get hooked on the show, and there aren't very many episodes.

He loves me, he loves me not is a French film from 2002 and fits the bill perfectly
18
AlternativeAsleep897 Mar 28, 2026 +18
Probably my favorite comedic version is maybe Charade (1963). Audrey Hepburn plays opposite of Cary Grant, and because Grant was so much older than Hepburn he asked that they rewrite his character so he wasn’t going after a much younger woman. The result is Hepburn plays Reggie, the main character, as crushing really hard on Cary Grant’s character from the beginning. It honestly makes the movie. I don’t think it’s necessarily obsessive, and it’s not totally one sided, but I figured I would bring it up.
18
haruspicat Mar 28, 2026 +3
She kind of has a catalogue of these, doesn't she? Similar dynamic with Fred Astaire in that Paris movie they made together.
3
Groundnut Mar 28, 2026 +38
I'll forgo the bonus points and recommend [May](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/) from 2002. A great unknown horror movie.

Those female characters were not protagonists
19
Wompatuckrule Mar 28, 2026 +4
An important distinction. Movies with *a primary/main character* who fits the description is what most of these answers have, but *a protagonist* who fits the bill is probably a lot harder to find. And you are correct that in both of the films above the male character is the protagonist, or "the character whose fate matters most and who faces significant obstacles" per the definition of the term. The female characters are the one creating those obstacles.

The Little Hours popped into my head. I really don’t know if it is as serious as you’re looking for (it’s a satire/comedy set at a convent), but it’s honestly so worth a watch. It is very unlike most comedies. The humor is not farcical so much as heartfelt and awkward

Gone with the wind is clear about the protag Scarlett chasing Ashley for the whole movie though he is not interested and not even a good match and she goes through 3 husbands and a farm and her parents and a civil war and a daughter and a miscarriage and the entire city of Atlanta burns to the ground and she loses a friend to understand it.

I liked the movie but it doesn't strike me as matching what OP is asking. A revenge fantasy on a deserted island is a bit different than a woman just obsessed and wanting a man to save/fix her.

check out "American Honey" for a similar vibe, it’s got that obsession angle but in a different context. for a new wave french flick, maybe give "The Piano Teacher" a shot—it dives into some wild psychological territory.

Impromptu (1991). My favorite rom-com, historical, and it's got a great cast. Based on "George Sand" pursuing Fredric Chopin "like a man" cause he has little interest in her, while her former lovers are quite literally fighting duels for her, while she has no interest in them. It's free on Tubi and stars Judy Davis, Hugh Grant, Julian Sands, Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, and Emma Thompson... And it basically checks all the boxes you mentioned, except it's not French/New Wave.

The second half of *Chungking Express* (1994) is kind of this, though the title of protagonist is probably at best shared with the male lead. And while it’s decidedly not “French New Wave,” with Wong Kar-Wai as director, it’s actually stylistically in the ballpark.
1
Tasha_2411 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Baby Reindeer, but it's a mini-series not a movie

The French movie 'The Piano Teacher' mostly fits your description.  Its pretty disturbing though, at the same time it's one of the best movies ever made

À la folie... pas du tout. It's an amazing fit for this. Audrey Tautou plays a woman in love with a married man to the point of going insane. It's pretty interesting for telling it from different perspectives: hers and his. If you watch it, let me know what you thought.

[Baby reindeer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_Reindeer). It’s a show, but it’s definitely along your definition.

Sweetness (2026) a teenage girl kidnaps her favorite singer to ‘help him’. She’s totally obsessed with him. Idk if it’s out yet

My Best Friend's Wedding is this movie, and so is He's Just Not That Into You, but the latter is one of those movies where everyone is connected, but we don't find out how until later. If you hate those, don't bother watching. Your life won't be enriched by having seen it. It's kind of bad. But it does fit your criteria.

Is this how you feel towards someone? Are you looking to feel a connection with a female that is obsessed with someone, just like you?

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not a French movie starring Audrey Tautou. It starts off telling the story of an art student who’s having an affair with a married doctor. Then halfway through the movie switches to the doctor’s perspective. >!turns out she’s a stalker who’s been imagining she’s in a relationship with the doctor and the doctor has no idea who she is!<
