Nothing says “secure borders” like detaining a Canadian in Florida and shipping them to Alligator Alcatraz. This is absurd. At minimum, people should be contacting their reps and local media to spotlight this mess.

We gotta stop using their words It’s American Auschwitz We saw their plans We know how badly they treat people there HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE GONE MISSING THERE! https://www.projectcensored.org/detainees-missing-ice-alligator-alcatraz/ This is NOT Alcatraz, this is a death camp Reminder that Auschwitz didn’t start as a death camp either

This is a Canadian paper too. These are concentration camps at minimum. They should know better than to swallow another hostile country's propaganda.

It's a center-right corporate tv network owned by megacorp Bell Canada (So like Canadian AT&T that owns half the media in Canada, plus sports teams). I just read it and the reporter used to be a local gal, so she's pretty good at her job.

Most of our news media in Canada is owned by Americans. Right wing Americans so yeah we hear lots about Trump and nothing about the dems.
28
Regnes 3 days ago +20
Almost all of our radio stations are conservative owned and controlled as well. I remember just before the Olympics the host of my city's largest station went on record saying she hopes more than anything that no Americans get booed and later said she was happy we lost the gold in hockey because the Americans deserved it more.
20
NetZeroSun 3 days ago +41
Americans still do not think are living in an era where we have concentration camps and in some cases death camps. Considering we have almost no knowledge of what happens to those sent abroad.
41
Gurlllllllll- 3 days ago +25
> in some cases death camps Gonna push back against this. We do not have camps perpetrating industrial execution of the imprisoned. We have concentration camps. I'm not saying this to take away from the horrors of people dying or going missing while imprisoned in the American concentration camps, but to distinguish between where we are and where we're heading.

The people have not gone missing like you're thinking. They have gone *administratively* missing. They were moved rapidly from one facility to another, before records could be updated about their whereabouts, for the purpose of cutting off contact with attorneys and family. Some people would pop up in a system for a facility in one part of the country for a few days, be able to talk to a lawyer or family member, and then be transferred again. What is happening is horrible, absolutely horrible, but people are not being systematically murdered and disposed of.
12
Dismal-Anybody-1951 3 days ago +19
I mean, what you're saying is happening, as a general tactic. But there's no confirmation of what has happened to the hundreds of people who disappeared from Alligator Alcatraz. They may have been diaposed of in some third-country deportation, or...
19
Raftger 3 days ago +26
The general public didn’t think people were being systematically murdered during the Holocaust, either though. I’m not saying that’s definitely what’s happening, but we don’t know it’s definitely not happening, either.
26
FloridaMMJInfo 3 days ago +8
The outside world literally didn’t know about the death camps, we found out when the Russians or Americans/Brit’s liberated the camps. So the general public wasn’t even given the chance to think about it, they were completely in the dark.
8
MommyLovesPot8toes 2 days ago +1
The general public has also been removed from those areas and communications throughout eastern Europe were a mess. Today ordinary people show up to protest at these sites regularly, we have Congress people fighting and often succeeding to get in for inspections, and we have social media. Things like mass murder can't just be covered up in the US today. The situation is bad enough without stretching the imagination to make it much, much worse.

16
SnarkingOverNarcing 3 days ago +3
I didn’t realize until recently how strong the “snowbird” mindset is in Canada. My Canadian MIL lives pension check to pension check but still feels entitled to spending 6mo of the year in another country (for her it’s Mexico though, can’t afford Florida) because she “can’t stand Ontario in April”. I told my husband that was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever heard from someone complaining about being broke and he said it’s genuinely a cultural mindset amongst older Canadians

From the article, he was partway through a repayment plan for that, and was arrested at a meeting with his probation officer.
55

He should still get due process, not treated like an animal.
79
studog21 3 days ago +25
Yeah, he pleaded no contest and was on a repayment plan since 2022. I get that you break a law you can be deported, even if here legally, but for a permenant resident for a couple of decades that owned up to a 'crime' and was trying to make it right gets kicked out of the country? Also not knowing the whole situation was this truly tax evasion of failure to pay? One is criminal and fraud, the other is simple civil. Was he hiding the fact he was behind and hadn't payed his taxes or could he simply not pay so ignored it? Intent matters. A crime is a crime and all that, but intent and severity should all be part of a deportation hearing. If this guy was following all the rules since his 'conviction' why exactly did he need kicked out of the country as a permenant green card holder?
25
csuazure 3 days ago +61
the justification machine turns. The majority of the 'criminals' grabbed by ice were already being dealt with in more reasonable ways by the respective civil systems. and this is ignoring the fact that the vast vast majority were not criminals.

When I zoom way out, this is a real life horror movie. Imagine living somewhere where the elected officials joke about feeding people to alligators at these camps and then you get sent there. This would literally make such a great horror/thriller movie if it wasn’t a pathetic twisted joke of a reality. F*** ICE.
17

Most Americans still won't call these concentration camps. And then also "well, I'm sure they had good reason" about illegally detaining people for an indeterminate period of time without giving them access to a lawyer.

An alien number, or “A” number is something that every green card holder gets. I had one 27 years ago before I became a citizen. It’s not anything new. It’s literally was just the identification number on my green card.

Odd-Syllabub-3642 3 days ago +2
Don’t forget that the woman who was previously in charge of this whole shit show joked about feeding the entire Mexican-AMERICAN population to alligators. How we’re not allowed to publicly stone people who push for such oppression and genocide is beyond me. I guess outting their husband’s massive bazonkas and kinks is the closest we get to Justice and variation from Nazi germany
2
sulla226 1 day ago +1
The alien number is basically just a quasi-SSN for immigrants who are not yet citizens that’s used to keep track of things like work authorization. There’s nothing inherently nefarious about it and every country does some version of this.

Luckily theyre kinda in shambles right now. The current liberal prime minister is meeting a lot of conservatives main concerns and the conservative candidate has become a laughing stock for his unpopularity. Because of how anti-Canadian the Republicans and Trump admin have been lately there has been a massive swing towards the left here, so the MAGA here are basically just the extreme conservatives who either live in rural areas or upperclass neighborhoods. The US is making itself a pariah. Trump and his diehards thought that the power that the US has had on the international stage was because the US has a big, scary military and $$ that it could use to push people around. They forgot that a lot of our power came from partnerships, mutual respect, and making fair deals that truly benefited all - and we were able to use our power to leverage things for the US. It's like toxic masculinity is making our policy and ruining our international relationships the same way it ruins marriages. Up next will be JD Vance with divorced dad energy.

They are operating this facility without official approval. A federal court ordered it shutdown, but a state court appealed it and they are now in litigation. Reasons are it is too close to nearby tribal land, as well as being built on environmentally protected everglades. It was built on an incomplete runway. Why was it incomplete? It's too close to nearby tribal land, as well as environmentally protected Everglades. THE EXACT SAME REASON THE CONCENTRATION CAMP WAS RULED ILLEGAL Good ole Florida. Nothing changes. I'll never visit there. Ever.

They charged him with a felony while he was on a payment plan for back taxes? He had a PO for that? F*** Alligator Alcatraz and all that but seems like there's some missing information. Like why he had a probation officer.
57
ahj3939 3 days ago +48
He owned a Tropical Smoothie franchise. Collected $32,988.50 in sales tax that he did not remit nor report to the state. He entered into a deferred prosecution agreement in 2018 and failed to comply with the terms. The state subpoenaed the company's bank records and they showed in the period of time where he was not reported and remitting taxes there were funds to pay what was owed. If you want to read the entire thing it's Charlotte County FL case # 20001074F and all these facts are under docket #8 AFFIDAVIT
48
thatisnotmyknob 3 days ago +10
Thank you! So how did it go from that to being deported tho? He was going to do jail time for the tax evasion?
10
ahj3939 3 days ago +28
It's not really tax evasion, it's felony theft of collected sales tax. I'm not sure the immigration side of it but must have something to do with being on probation for felony charges.
28
thatisnotmyknob 3 days ago +10
Thank you. That explains the felony!
10
Hangry_Howie 3 days ago +21
Yeah that doesn't sit right with me either. He wasn't just not paying his back taxes, he actively defrauded the government. The IRS won't typically go for jail time if they can just make you repay for the next 10 years. Still doesnt warrant going to a concentration camp, but theres more to his case than a tax "whoopsie".
21
thatisnotmyknob 3 days ago +14
Its just such a basic fact. In the article about the guy getting deported,  why would you not explain the legal justification they used to deport him?  Its so suspicious.
14
TBJ12 3 days ago +32
Probation means you're a free man having to follow some rules. It doesn't make you an enemy of the USA. Defending this nonsense is just cruel.
32
thatisnotmyknob 3 days ago +11
No I'm not defending it. I just find it curious they haven't legally explained why he was deported in an article talking about him being deported.
11
420fanman 3 days ago +14
I think this part of the article explained a bit on that: Under American immigration law, defrauding the government of more than $10,000 in revenue is considered “an aggravated felony.” But like you said, he was already charged for that and on a repayment plan. I guess the courts over there TACO just like their president.
14
TBJ12 3 days ago +16
Did you read the article? He owned back taxes that he's been paying for years but still owed $12k. Apparently that's enough to get you locked up in a concentration camp. Good thing Trump and his admin are getting all these violent criminals off the streets of America. F*** everyone who voted for this POS. Wanna be f****** NAZI losers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was forced to shutter his smoothie shop in Port Charlotte, Fla. During that time, Dixon says he fell behind more than US$30,000 in unpaid taxes. In 2022, he pleaded “no contest” to tax evasion and agreed to a monthly repayment plan. Over the past three years, Dixon says he has paid back two-thirds of the amount but still owes the U.S. government approximately $12,000. So they arrested him for the balance $1,200? Why not serve him a notice or a warning of some kind? This feels so heavy handed.
27
fallingdowndizzyvr 3 days ago +21
If he had to plead anything, that's criminal. So there was something more going on than not paying taxes. Since if it was merely that, it would be civil. Then the IRS would try to collect just like any collection agency would.
21
Hangry_Howie 3 days ago +18
For them to go straight to tax evasion means it was more than him just not paying back taxes. There was probably some book cooking going on, but that doesnt warrant a trip to a concentration camp.
18
hirudoredo 3 days ago +8
yeah idk. I owe like 36k myself (white, born citizen to families going back generations) from my major business downturn over like... three years. but I'm on a payment plan in good standing and they do not gaf. So either there's something else going on here or DHS/ICE/whoever are using it as an excuse to detain a foreigner for their stats. Not that it matters in the end - he should absolutely not be in a concentration camp. But even stripping that away, why should I feel safe owing as much as he did and being in good standing on a repayment plan? (Yes, I know I said I was white. tbh I'm other minority checkboxes so I just don't feel safe at all.)
8
wartopuk 3 days ago +2
If you're an american citizen, they can't exactly deport you for taxes, or really anything unless you happen to have another citizenship. This person was not a citizen and was convicted of a felony according to the article.

This is one of the more disgusting, inhumane things I've read about yet. Did the United States not offer stimulus loans for small businesses that were struggling in those first months/years of COVID that they could gradually pay back? Wouldn't something like that have avoided this man getting hit with a criminal charge? Is it even reasonable that he was criminally charged with tax evasion in this case? Did this happen only because he was Canadian? What is wrong with the United States? The fact that ICE ripped this man away from his home of two decades, and an entire family he's clearly built there, is beyond cruel and unusual. No wonder the world is turning its back on the USA. Good grief. I had once thought retiring to upstate New York and starting up a small cottage artisan business in the Catskills would be a nice idea, but I think I'll find a spot in the Maritimes instead. Insanity.

Attention Canadians: America considers you their enemy regardless of your skin color. You are putting yourself at risk if you choose to travel or live there. Stop playing useful idiots to these extremists.

We could as a country vote for normal people instead of expecting immigrants to vacate every time a toddler is put in charge.

That January 20th quote about Pennsylvania's voting computers makes me think the country did vote for a closer to normal person.

Floridas economy depends on tourism, especially our repeat Canadian guests.  This harms mom and pops, and the working class deeply and serves zero purpose other than cruelty. It also harms big corporations so hopefully they will be sending some of their campaign donations the other direction as tax gifts on no income arent really good for their bottom line.

Well he had a terrible lawyer letting him plead to that crime. It is deportable.
