Can't control urge to rewatch movies

Posted by Hamza_Ali_Mazaari_

I know probably a lot of you rewatch movies and shows too but you know its a like a guilty pleasure for me because its so comforting you know the movie is good and you rewatch but at the same time prevents you from exploring more that you could have. Sometimes i ask myself is it a waste of time then i rewatch, feel good and am like no really a waste of time if I am still enjoying it. Like there are days when I could not start a new movie at all its like either I would rewatch or won't watch a movie at all. I know this is not something that needs a fix but I would be happier to see if more people relate to this. Edit: Damn I just loved to hear it all from you how similar we are and how common this can be, thank you everyone for replying

Why is it wrong to enjoy something again? That's called value

I get this completely - there's something really comforting about knowing exactly what emotional beats you're gonna hit. For me it's usually when I'm stressed from work or just need that familiar backdrop while I'm doing other stuff. The exploration vs comfort thing is real but I think there's value in both modes depending on what headspace you're in.

Exactly I have heard stress leads you to finding your comfort say after work and you mind would wanna watch the same good stuff

I'm like this too. Why take the chance on watching something that might not be good when I could rewatch all my favourites for the tenth time. I do enjoying watching new movies but sometimes you just need ol faithful

totally get it, sometimes you just wanna chill with a familiar fave instead of risking it with something new that might not hit the same. it’s like finding comfort in the predictable when life feels chaotic.

I've always been more of a TV series guy, not movies necessarily though I've seen plenty too. Over the years I've just lost the ability (if you can call it that) to watch new things. I thought it's because of my lack of time to do so, but I encountered the same problem having lots of free time too. It used to be a favourite hobby of mine, and now it's just gone. I truly prefer to re-watch stuff that I truly love now rather than starting new things. I want to, but I just can't for some reason.

This is not weird at all. There’s a whole podcast dedicated to this called “The Rewatchables” and it’s also my favorite. Sometimes I…relisten to the episodes!

I go back and forth between rewatching and  watching something I haven’t seen until I fall asleep and wake up at 1am then it’s time to go to bed. Haven’t seen a movie in years

I was like this also, then I downloaded letterboxd. It pushed me to watch more new movies to build my profile.

So you kinda forced yourself into it?

Yeah I seen all these people with massive Letterboxd profiles and it drove me to watch more movies. And I’m glad too, some of my favorite movies off all time have come since

I get a lot out of rewatching movies when they're the kind of movie that the filmmakers really put thought into every little decision. You notice so many things and really appreciate how it all fits together.

I rewatch movies and entire television series all the time. I have a lot of time to kill at work.

I just try to balance out rewatches with new current year movies, with older 70's or earlier movies and with international movies. It's not a 1:1 balance, but just something I keep in mind when picking what to watch next.

I have the opposite problem, I have given several movies a 9/10 or 10/10, movies that I've thoroughly enjoyed, that I have yet to see a second time...

I have over 500 movies in my watchlist but keep rewatching the same 20 movies. Most are comedies or just brutally violent movies.
