Burnin that  oil

Not even doing anything useful with it. Just burning it because our leaders can't get along.

On the plus side, this dumb f****** war has made the best case yet for why people need to develop renewable tech on their own soil

Extension_Pin_6359 May 6, 2026 +146
Should have done it decades ago, but the second best time is now. I am planning a full solar rig with big ass battery. That and electric car/truck and I'll be set. A predictable cost until the system is paid off, for my home energy needs and transportation. If the government wanted to get the US off oil, it would offer loans and all sorts of incentives to convert everything to solar/wind/geo. Then we wouldn't care as much who ran the Middle East, would we?
146
Optimal_Inspection83 May 6, 2026 +67
Subsidising people to get solar has no benefit for their mates running the power companies, so you're out of luck
67
LucidiK May 6, 2026 +51
Yeah, lots of options if the goal is solving the problem. The goal is profiting from the problem. Once you grasp that, these insane decisions start making a lot more sense.
51
ZAlternates May 6, 2026 +17
We’ve been conned into thinking the “invisible hand of capitalism”, in its never-ending pursuit of profits, will benefit us all.
17
bhramam33 May 6, 2026 +4
Most major countries already have so much Solar that the grids cannot handle them without Major upgrades. Intermittent and distributed nature of Solar requires fundamentally different approach to building grids at scale.
4
LucidiK May 6, 2026 +8
Grid infrastructure would be reworked before mass subsidies at that scale. Or at least, they would be; as long as the shift was implemented rationally.
8
WatermelonWithAFlute May 6, 2026 +6
That sounds like the grinds need to be improved, then.
6
jert3 May 6, 2026 +14
It's definitely not our technology that is preventing the green energy revolution from happening.

Loved jumping off this f****** carousell. I know one person doing it isn't a big deal, but once you tell everyone how liberating it is, more and more will join. We don't need this shit, there are alternatives that not only work, but work better.

The issue is that oil demand is why the US dollar is so strong, and a big part of American prosperity. It’s a bit of a bind really for the US
2
DjAlex420 May 6, 2026 +2
The US doesn't want the world off the oil because petrodollars run the world. If no one needs their oil anymore they lose a lot of power.
2
Creatret May 6, 2026 +6
Will be forgotten within a week after the war. When Ukraine-Russia ends one way or another, Center-Conservative and right-wing governments in Europe will all push for "c****" fossils. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

2
artofprocrastinatiom May 6, 2026 +2
This dumb f****** war also showed us that if you have tech developed or in the process of developing there is a high chance that your country will be liberated soon
2
Necessary-Music-6685 May 6, 2026 +2
Did it? Full scale war in the Middle East barely caused oil to rise above $100, didn’t even spark a recession.

My conservative buddy just sent me a thing about how the ipcc admitted climate change estimates were all made up. He also told me he's happy to pay more for gas under Trump, so he's probably unable to form his own opinions anymore.
58
Koala_eiO May 6, 2026 +7
> He also told me he's happy to pay more for gas under Trump That's one of the signs of early Alzheimer.
7
joshthornton May 6, 2026 +9
Isn't an estimate inherently made up? After all, it's an educated guess.
9
cbbclick May 6, 2026 +4
I mean there's made up, and there's made up right? At my job I could run an estimate. I do it all the time. It's made up, but it's based on something. I could also just make up an estimate for whatever you do. $22,700. That's entirely made up. I don't even know what you do or even the size of projects you might work on. I could have just invented the world's most expensive burger or a very reasonable price for a jet. He is arguing that the climate change estimates are the second and not the first kind of made up. That they aren't based on anything.
4

I was just being pedantic 😂, I get what you mean.
2

There is happy news. All the increased global electricity demand in 2025 was meet by added renewables! Total carbon emissions even went down (emissions not carbon in the atmosphere)! https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/global-electricity-review-2026/
295
LEM1978 May 6, 2026 +143
You see: we shouldn’t just be meeting new demand with renewables. We should be replacing old demand with them as well, and much faster than we are.
143
Phalonnt May 6, 2026 +116
I mean, you're right, but we have to meet demand first before we exceed it.

On the bright side of the shitty Iran war, many countries are realizing oil is not a stable strategic resources anymore. They want energy independence and green energy allows that. Hopefully they all take a good look at nuclear too. The bad side is that all those oil spilled from Iran war. It's interesting that the best strategy right now is to play both side China and USA. Because USA is not dependable anymore... Canada is doing this.
8
StompingChip May 6, 2026 +10
Like... wayyyyyyy faster.... like 30 years ago.
10
bleepbloop1900 May 6, 2026 +4
Hopefully the silver lining of all of the terrible things happening right now will be that it finally forces the world to transition away from oil.
4
rithrawr May 6, 2026 +2
It is at least getting countries to realize oil is not a stable resource and they want energy independence. Many are turning toward green energy. I'm not sure if they will transition fully away from oil, but they'll definitely diversify. LNG ain't going do much either when Iran fucked that up by blowing the facilities up (in response of USA). So it's positive.
2
Plastic-Fox0293 May 6, 2026 +6
Worse, we should be reducing consumption.  Ads > earth
6
CorganKnight May 6, 2026 +2
and soon ppl start to realize that what greta said is true, they really stole our future
2
carmellashutthedooor May 6, 2026 +24
And hopefully Trump’s foolishness in his war with Iran making oil such a precarious and volatile resource will have the unintended benefit of hastening the world economy’s transition towards renewables. It’s the best choice ecologically and it’s the best choice for stability and sovereignty.
24
marnieeez May 6, 2026 +4
Me as well as a few other people I know switched to electric cars due to the rising gas prices. I also really want to invest in solar panels for my home. Energy prices have been absolutely unpredictable and I’m tired of my bills being dependent on a few megalomaniacs

6
Phalonnt May 6, 2026 +2
You're right to an extent, but the future is not set in stone and we are far from failure. We're losing the fight, but the fight isn't over. It's tempting to sit back and say "what can I do?," but thats the mentality that gurentees failure. Things are changing for the better, there are reasons to be hopeful.
2
Creatret May 6, 2026 +5
I respect your opinion and admire your optimism but I think we are past the point of failure. The current level of CO2 is from decades ago. The fight is over. We are just waiting for chaos to ensue when environmental systems will inevitably collapse and earth becomes an increasingly hostile environment to human life. This will happen in the next few decades.
5
Phalonnt May 6, 2026 +3
Glad to know we cant rely on you to help solve the problem 👍
3

Not one concrete statement in this entire post lol. Optimism is powerful but you sound like an idiot when you get in a discussion about facts and do nothing but talk about feelings. 432 PPM. If you were wondering. Remember not that long about people were talking about how us hitting 350 ppm was likely going to be a tipping point. GG people. G G.

No_Rain8512 May 6, 2026 +172
*Although the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has continued to rise, there was a reduction in U.S. emissions in 2023 and 2024. That trend, however, was reversed in 2025, at least partially because of the increased electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers.* Remember this next time some politician asks for your sacrifice in the name of climate change.
172
CaiusRemus May 6, 2026 +16
Well the alternative to not sacrificing voluntarily, is sacrificing involuntarily. Either way, you ain’t keeping the world you had.
16
Cosmyka May 6, 2026 +59
The reality is far more unsettling: avoiding the worst of the climate crisis will require genuine changes in our behaviors, our lifestyles, and the way our societies function, both individually and collectively. There is no serious scientific pathway that allows us to maintain current levels of consumption indefinitely while expecting the crisis to simply resolve itself.
59
Opposite_Agency1229 May 6, 2026 +36
It’s more like the top percent of society will live lavish lifestyles regardless of the climate issues. While the rest of us struggle bus just to live while being blamed for the climate crisis and having all of our minor creature comforts taken away. This idea that we’ll all feel responsible and deal with it all collectively is bullshit, especially given the current political climate.
36
Roentgen_Ray1895 May 6, 2026 +17
I mean yes but we eventually do gotta reckon with the million upon millions of acres wasted feeding billions of cattle so that everyone gets c**** access to awful slop meat. I’m not even a vegan but this is a genuine issue that does need to at least be acknowledged. We’re wasting land that could be a carbon sink and we’re not even using it efficiently but instead are feeding a countless number of massive animals that also get shipped out of country and contributes to virtual water loss (along with all the stupid bullshit we grow in the Central Valley getting shipped out overseas) Even if you stop all the CO2 emissions, we are still obliterating ecosystems and decimating entire species so John Johnson can get his 3rd Big Arch of the week and keep working on that colon cancer diagnosis.
17
NatureStoof May 6, 2026 +6
Lavish lifestyle regardless of climate issue? Venus would like a word.
6
Thurak0 May 6, 2026 +8
> avoiding the worst of the climate crisis will require genuine changes in our behaviors, our lifestyles, and the way our societies function, both individually and collectively. Yes. And we could start with limiting new ways to hurt our planet. Like in this case especially the AI data centres. If the industry would be held accountable first, we would have made way more progress in saving our planet.
8
kaneua May 6, 2026 +2
> avoiding the worst of the climate crisis will require genuine changes in our behaviors, our lifestyles Well, nuclear power plants and electric transport don't require behavior changes.
2
Ashmedai May 6, 2026 +2
Nor do massive alt energy arrays and battery systems. Which are, right now, even if over built to handle seasonal sunshine/wind variation, quite a bit cheaper\* than nuclear. I'm not saying we should stop dreaming about the nuclear thing, but one should be pragmatic. \* Especially if we stop the punitive tax on China's alt energy imports to US (if you're from here)
2
Choice_Past7399 May 6, 2026 +8
I can't remember a politician ever asking me to sacrifice to prevent climate change.
8
lolwutpear May 6, 2026 +4
Yeah, they don't ask. Either they don't care, or they just impose their will. Either way, no asking involved.
4
xelah1 May 6, 2026 +2
'No-one must do anything until everyone else has done something!' You will never run out of other people to blame. The US can blame China, China can blame the US, the masses can blame the rich, the developing world can blame the west, etc etc. And you're probably still buying products which use AI somewhere underneath at the same time.

Reminder that CO2 levels begin to measurably impair cognitive function at around 1000ppm and significantly by 1400ppm. Even though these levels might seem like a long way off from the present ~435ppm outdoor concentration, they can already be hit indoors with poor ventilation, and it's only going to get more difficult.

I think everyone understands now that we’re going to experience whatever the worst case CO2 scenario whether we want to or not. COVID showed us that people have become so blindly ignorant and selfish that they won’t take the tiniest action for an amorphous “greater good” any longer, if indeed they ever would. We are damned and we richly deserve it. To the handful of people that cared and the species that will suffer alongside us, you deserved better.

fun fuct: Most CO2 sensors and air quality measuring devices you get as a consumer automatically calibrate themselves on the assumption that fresh air equals 400 ppm of CO2. This new record if for an average of 431 ppm. This might mean very little considering the point were in door air get bad people start having trouble to concentrate being at 800 to 1000 ppm and people really get drowzy and shouldn't work anymore at 1500 to 2000 ppm, but it means measurements are already off even in the freshest of airs.

Yeah, it's over. The alternative is a reduction in the quality of life of everyone on the planet. That will never happen. Nobody is willing to give up anything. Climate activism stops at a Twitter post. No real actions are ever taken. Oh wait, Joe over there made a sign out of cardboard with a clever slogan and took it to a rally in his town. I'm sure that'll do a lot of good. To stop climate change, a complete reversal of the global way of life is needed. I'm not talking about driving a hybrid gas/electric car. I'm talking about massively limiting electricity in your house, limited internet, not burning fuel for recreational travel, banning all air travel. No more deliveries to your house. You buy what is at the store nearest you, and that's it. Nothing in the store came from more than a few miles of the store. We all live a life where c**** plastic shit we don't need leaves a factory in China, gets put on a boat to travel halfway around the world, then driven to you. And we all think that's normal, and there's some magic other way to reverse climate change. There isn't. It's over. Whatever happens will happen. With the nukes still hanging around, the resource wars raging for decades already (oil now, water soon), things ain't looking too great. I'm an optimist though, and I figure humans will figure some sort of existence out. But I am not so sure that will include what we consider a normal life here in 2026.

There is certainly a carbon footprint left with the way we currently manufacture EVs. Short term cost in hopes for a lomg term solution.
2
cheesemangee May 6, 2026 +13
It's only gonna get worse as we keep growing. We've got 6 billion people more now than we did seventy years ago and no one is even remotely ready to talk about population control bills.
13
LEM1978 May 6, 2026 +18
Yet places like the US with low population growth contribute the highest CO2 per capita It’s not a number of people issue. It’s a lifestyle issue
18
Escape-artist-43 May 6, 2026 +14
Pretty much the only places with above replacement level birth numbers are Africa as a whole and the Middle East. If you’re from a Western country, your bills won’t stop that.
14
cultureicon May 6, 2026 +9
Populations are set to go down now in nations that emeit C02 but it doesn't really matter it won't be fast enough. The only thing that is possible now is a scientific breakthrough for energy generation. Everything else is a joke and not going to happen.

6
Professional_Deer464 May 6, 2026 +6
> climate lockdowns You do realize that's a far right conspiracy, do you?
6
sorrison May 6, 2026 +6
It’s entirely too late. Only 2 countries have submitted a plan to actually meet it. There’s no funding for countries that can’t afford it as most of the banks have pulled out - in addition to the US who were going to help fund it. Countries like the UK would rather import steel/met coal at a higher emissions rate than open their own met coal due to public pressure. There is nowhere near enough investment in mining the critical minerals required to actually make the infrastructure required to reduce emissions - a lot to do with social sentiment toward mining, even though it’s required.
6

Wasn't the deadline by 2030? Well it's 2026 now and 2030 is no longer some far off future year. We need to lock tf in.

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere just hit a ‘depressing’ new record These data come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory, which may soon be shut down because of proposed government budget cuts The amount of carbon dioxide detected in the atmosphere hit a record high in April. CO2 levels averaged about 431 parts per million (ppm) over that month, according to data collected at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, are measured as a proportion of the total atmosphere. The numbers are presented as the number of molecules of a particular gas out of a million total molecules, or ppm. Climate scientist Zachary Labe of Climate Central, a nonprofit that researches climate change, says the new record is “depressing” but not unexpected. “It’s just another sign that carbon dioxide continues to increase in our atmosphere as our planet continues to warm,” he says. “For many climate scientists, this is just ‘here it is again, another record in the wrong direction.’” Labe explains that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere tends to peak in April each year as decaying plants release greenhouse gases after winter. Some of that CO2 gets reabsorbed by plants as they grow during the warmer months. But NOAA’s data show a worrying trend, with the average monthly amount of CO2 steadily increasing. The Mauna Loa Observatory has been directly observing atmospheric CO2 and keeping record of its levels for the longest out of any other U.S. facility. Mauna Loa first began keeping track of the gas’s presence in the atmosphere in 1958. That year the April level of CO2 was under 320 ppm. The record comes as the observatory faces the risk of having its funding cut. A budget proposal on NOAA’s website for the 2027 fiscal year, which begins in October 2026, proposes cutting funding to numerous climate monitoring facilities, including Mauna Loa. Other methods can trace carbon levels in the atmosphere further back in history. For example, climatologists can analyze small bubbles of gas trapped in ice cores to study the Earth’s atmosphere hundreds of thousands of years ago. On its website, NOAA cites analyses that show that, in pre-industrial-revolution times, atmospheric CO2 was at 280 ppm or less. Even during interglacial periods, when Earth trended toward warmer temperatures and higher CO2 levels, the amount of the gas in the atmosphere seemed to have topped out at around 300 ppm. Although the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has continued to rise, there was a reduction in U.S. emissions in 2023 and 2024. That trend, however, was reversed in 2025, at least partially because of the increased electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers. Still, Labe says there are reasons for optimism as the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind expands.

Too bad we can't invent a tree leaf... 6 to 1 carbon capture... But we put a 2.5 BILLION HELICOPTER ON MARS, remotely controlled from EARTH. Artificial chloroplasts invented, but no one wants plain coal. I mean, who makes money on coal? So make more fuel and combust it back into the air. Fools Create a leaf, artificial tree, create glucose, convert to starch, sell it. Starch market doubling over next ten years....

Playing devil's avocate here, but younger generations are doing their part through all the need and use of electronics, which require microchips, which are created with minerals that are mined for.. older generations could live their lives contently with a 4k tv, tower home pc and any galaxy a series wheres younger generations want 20x the amount of gadgets. Its not their fault... media conditions their need to use it, buy it and to resell it. Edit: Man, all these proxy wars that are causing all this smoke to go into the atmosphere surely have no relationship towards microchips or the minerals needed to manufacture them to supply the demand for them, especially Ukraine and Taiwan. Edit Edit: short retort to your post is that this isnt a problem created by a specific genration, this is mankind's doing.

Oh I remember when we were below the 400 ppm line and what a big event it was to know that we had surpassed it. Now we have the same levels as 3 to 4 million years ago. Literally our species has never lived in a world like this. It truly makes many of us feel hopeless

If the CO2 was in a form we could see, like an elephant, people would be more alarmed. 50 billion elephants extra and millions more adding every second would make mankind pause. But they can’t see it and their media is owned by people who don’t care. Climate disaster won’t touch the billionaires. They have bigger than WW2 cruiser sized yachts so they can live anywhere. But fixing it, that will make them slightly less rich and that they won’t stand for. Cutting back (going all electric) won’t do now, only capture and I mean giga ton scale capture, is the only way to save mankind. Most wild species are already going to be extinct in a decade. But at least old fat white guys got rich.

Told you in 1990. First warning that climate change hits, you’re going to start breathing less oxygen and more carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide is the highest primary gas that comes from burning oil and coal). Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out, but it will be the first sign. Second is highest rate of respiratory issues in health.
