Cartoon Network unveils Regular Show: The Lost Tapes

Posted by mobpiecedunchaindan

_Cartoon Network has announced the return of Regular Show. Premiering with a special half-hour episode on May 11th across Cartoon Network’s global channels, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes uncovers all-new episodes of the celebrated animated series._ _Created by Executive Producer JG Quintel and produced by Cartoon Network Studios, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes centres on Mordecai and Rigby – best friends who work and live at a local park. Somehow, their mundane jobs always descend into surreal chaos, much to the annoyance of their boss and coworkers, namely Skips, Pops, Muscle Man, Hi-Five Ghost and park boss Benson. The new season will run for 44 episodes._

FOURTY FOUR EPISODES?!?! Jolly good show

In the current age of prestige TV with exceedingly small episode counts, that feels like a godsend

pichukirby Mar 23, 2026 +138
Regular Show had 11 minute episodes, like most Cartoon Network shows. So it's more like a 22 episode season of a standard TV show.

PleasantThoughts Mar 23, 2026 +76
That's true but his last show Close Enough had a total of 46 half episodes of those over the course of 3 seasons so it's still pretty great

corndogs102 Mar 23, 2026 +36
Well close enough also had a ton of behind the scenes drama with the network. Miss that show.

Still though, 44 unique stories, no matter the length, is impressive

It happens all the time with kids shows and Regular Show is Close Enough (heehee) to a kids show being on Cartoon Network that it probably gets a similar production schedule. Sometimes they take longer to air though. My daughter's favorite kids show had like 75 episodes in its first season (11 minute eps) but over the course of like 2 and a half years or something.

dickpollution Mar 23, 2026 +7
Worst offender is Spongebob. I believe they had a season ending, another season starting, while *another* cocurrent season was running, all on the same day. edit: partially correct - season 5 ended on July 19th, 14 days after season 6 ended, and season 7 started on July 19th.

GlamMetalLion Mar 23, 2026 +1
As a kid, the gap between season 2/3 (which was all mixed up) and 4 felt massive due to the movie. From september 2002 to May 05, spongebob episodes were spread out with 6 month gaps. By 05 i had lost interest in spongebob, and was mostly watching the fairly oddparents which had a lot of new episodes.

But 11 minutes in the Regular Show universe is like a lifetime in any other. Now, give me some sugar!

So given the title, will this season then be set between two of the prior seasons of *Regular Show*, rather than during the life-flashforward of the finale, as fans had expected? That would be a shame: I had liked the overarching story *Regular Show* slowly built up to, even if it hadn’t been absolutely necessary. …Unless this series is actually about the next cycle of the universe, since that was also part of the lore. That could make for an interesting twist.
183
FlowersByTheStreet Mar 23, 2026 +188
Seems like an excuse to not deal with the actual overall plot and moreso be slice of life but ya never know
188
GiveMeSumChonChon Mar 23, 2026 +30
That could work but they call back to all notable characters they meet. That’s what made the episodes good. The slice of life aspect is why close enough failed. It would weird to see story’s play out that they never mention again.
30
IMDXLNC Mar 23, 2026 +8
This is actually the part of Regular Show that I enjoyed more. The earlier seasons were focused on these episodes with no over arching plots and they were the best.
8
corndogs102 Mar 23, 2026 +27
There is a comic series called 25 years later that follows the finale of regular show
27
CrimnsonRed Mar 23, 2026 +7
if it scratches the itch, they did do a sequel comic series Regular Show: 25 Years Later that takes place right after the flash forward
7
MrRedoot55 Mar 23, 2026 +7
I would have liked to see the exploits of those new Park workers shown in the finale, if we’re going to be honest. They may have had qualities differentiating them from Mordecai, Rigby, and the others.
7
caninehere Mar 23, 2026
I think it is meant to be a more episodic thing that is friendlier for kids. That's just a guess though. I'm not saying kid-friendly as in it will be dumbed down or censored, I mean that episodes will stand on their own and there'll be less continuing storylines. Earlier episodes of Regular Show were more like that but it kind of aged with the audience. That's what they are doing with Adventure Time: they're doing Hello BMO (a show for little kids), Adventure Time: Side Quests which will seemingly be standalone ish episodic adventures that are ideal for an elementary school audience, and then Fionna and Cake which has some more mature themes (though still ok for kids to watch) and more aimed at the people who watched Adventure Time when it was on.

People who haven’t seen the show might not realize how much a beloved staple this show is. Shows like Regular Show, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, etc are in a league of their own, and they’re absolutely amazing even for adults. I highly recommend people who haven’t seen them to check them out. I also can’t believe we’re getting a whopping 44 more episodes of Regular Show btw!
10
BurgerNugget12 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Regular show has aged incredibly well, the humor and absurdity almost feels way ahead of its time. It’s the best in the summer as well, as the early seasons give off such a summer afternoon vibe

Is Regular Show seem as a kids show? I definitely didn't see it that way
5
Mentoman72 Mar 23, 2026 +9
I was a kid when it premiered and definitely thought it was more mature than the other shows on the network. Mordecai says Rigby “pissed” him off in an early episode, which stood out to me as a kid.
9
bencciarati Mar 23, 2026 +4
Skips also pretty brutally dies in the chocolate cake episode, like he melts into sand leaving his skeleton behind. It's brutal by Cartoon Network's standards, anyway.
4
caninehere Mar 23, 2026 +3
I was an adult when it first came on and I always felt Adventure Time was like an elementary school type show when it came on and Regular Show was more like 12+. I was 20 when it started and it actually seemed perfectly suited to me or people even older (slackers getting out of college...). I feel that was probably the aim - Regular Show was a show about being a 20something slacker but appropriate for kids, and Close Enough was a show about being a 30something parent that was not so appropriate for kids.
3
legopego5142 Mar 23, 2026 +2
It definitely is lol. I like it, but its made for middle schoolers.

So it’s based in the same universe and everything happens between the first and last episodes of the original series, guessing from the announcement poster, Mordecai and Rigby are still the main characters and everyone from the park, but there are new characters added and even though I am 24 now I am still happy like a child, I wanna cry ;)

I'm excited, but also kinda sad the adult swim rumors weren't true. I was hoping they were gonna go a more adult route so JG Quintel can make the show what he originally wanted it to be!

Have Cartoon Network considered releasing a good show? This is going to be more of a rant about the state of the UK & Ireland channel, which is just full of hours-long reruns of Teen Titans Go, Adventure Time and the Regular Show, as if these are the only three shows they've done anything with for the past decade. Even Boomerang has fallen from grace. It used to be the home of all the vintage Hanna-Barbera stuff. Now it's twelve hours of the Mr Bean animated series, and another twelve hours of whatever Cocomelon-esque shit Mush-Mush And The Mushables is... Wish I could say Nickelodeon UK&I was faring better, but NickToons is showing nothing but Alvin & the Chipmunks, and Nick Jr Too may as well be called the Peppa Pig Channel at this point. Why the f*** can't we have a schedule like the US networks, where you have Bob's Burgers, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, Smiling Friends, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and American Dad? This is why nobody watches cable anymore...

AWESOME! After nearly a decade, we're gonna see all our favorite characters again! Among them, I hope and pray CJ comes back. Even if she and Mordecai aren't a couple anymore, they can STILL be friends. Same with Eileen and Rigby. Honestly, it was SO depressing that CJ never came back after Season 6 (not counting a few cameos). She doesn't deserve to be pushed aside and forgotten. She's not just a stand-in for Margaret. And speaking of Margaret, I think it'd be a good episode if she and CJ got to have an honest talk with each other. As god-awful as "Not Great Double Date" was, it did show that Margaret and CJ can TRY to get along. They even shared a laugh. But we'll just have to see. With 44 episodes, we're bound to get some gems. Here's hoping CJ gets her chance to be loved again. ❤️
