Cast iron vs carbon steel — which should you actually buy?

Cast iron: heavier, slower to heat, more forgiving, great for oven work, lasts forever. Carbon steel: lighter, faster to heat, more responsive, better for stovetop control, also lasts forever. I use both. If you can only have one and you cook mostly on the stove, carbon steel. If you do a lot of oven braising, cast iron.
