Castaway

Posted by BitchyWaiter_OG

Hot take: The movie is much better if it start shortly before the plane crash and ends right after the rescue. You don't need to edit a single thing. His regular life on the mainland doesn't add any needed story or character development that his time on the island doesn't already brilliantly achieve.

Just rewatched last night. Agree on the beginning. But to me the ending is essential.

Gotta disagree with you there pal. Especially the beautiful feeling of hope when Chuck is deciding where to go...that was such a beautiful scene.

Yeah, and it also showed he was finally making the commitment by giving her the ring before he leaves. So it makes the crash, and the loss, and her moving on, that much harder for him. The OP to me reflects TikTok’s impact on media consumption lol

Agreed. The mainland storyline is absolutely essential to the plot. Without it it cheapens the island storyline.

You'd be wrong about me, the OP. I think it's a more powerful story if we know less about the man off the island, and it becomes a story about any or every man at his core.

I just don’t get how stripping the character arc of the main protagonist is adding to the story. Sorry.

Amazing how Honest Trailers just did a whole bit on this on Tuesday and now you're posting the same thing...

\*yawn\* I haven't watched that in years. Their repeated bit of showing every single example of something like "staring into space" got old so fast. There's no reason for their videos to be as long as they are. That said, I'm curious and want to check that episode out now.

Yeah I don’t really think anything needs trimmed but to each their own

> You don't need to edit a single thing. This. Leave it be. It needs no edits, including yours.

Fine. I'll hang up the phone with Robert Zemeckis and we won't release it.

Now I know you're lying. I'm Robert Zemeckis.

Disagree, part of Chuck's arc is developing empathy after years of isolation. He doesn't say "I'm sorry" when he ditches his fiancee on CHRISTMAS to go to work, he doesn't say "I'm sorry" to his friend to empathize with his wife's terminal cancer, he doesn't say those two words until Wilson floats away... Then he gives a very heartfelt apology to his friend about missing his wife's death and funeral. And he apologizes to his fiancee for leaving on Christmas, and I don't think he means "I never should have gotten on that flight (because it crashed)" I think he means "I'm sorry I did that in the first place."

Great movie. I think the only reason there is any reference to his life was to show how tenacious he was. And how time dictated his actions. But my son cried when Wilson got lost and I had a fun time asking him questions. And telling him how we can love things that aren’t alive, and feel someone else’s pain when we don’t even know them.

that's a pretty interesting take. the whole setup does feel a bit drawn out, but i think the contrast between his old life and the island is part of what makes his transformation hit harder.

Every time I see this title mistake, I keep hoping that it's actually talking about a different film. You're talking about **Cast Away**. I've yet to meet another person who has seen Nicolas Roeg's fantastic deserted island movie (based on a true story) **Castaway**.

The fact that it’s a documentary is why it shows everything

That makes perfect sense.

To be clear, I like the film. But the beginning and ending scenes have sensibilities and themes that feel very of-the-time to me. I think you have a bolder and more memorable film without them. I understand why they have them though. It's definitely more of a crowd pleaser.

Also, to be clear. I think the best version of the film is somewhere in between what I suggested and what the movie actually was. But if not given that choice, I think the film is better if you just chop off the beginning and end.
