She improvised that fruit wine commercial that went on to be imitated by many fans later on.

My wife had already started the show and when I saw that scene I decided I needed to watch it too.

Her performance in those takes for the commercial is completely brilliant. What a character. What an actor. We're lucky to have had her perform for us.

I mean with the Christopher guest movies and her Second City background it’s safe to say she was one of the best improv comedians maybe of all time.

Hmm, I was there when it was filmed and it most definitely was not improvised.

My impression from this and other descriptions is that Catherine reworked the scene beforehand and improvised in rehearsal, which resulted in the final sequence. Both things can be true -- improv doesn't have to be Robin Williams-type riffing in the moment.
16
makingotherplans 4 days ago +3
So I heard that lots of Catherine’s wardrobe and wigs were owned by her and not the show. She’d bring them in for doing scenes? Is that true, or as like Dan says, they sold everything?

Emily Hampshire (Stevie) talked about how O'Hara rewrote their big scene in the Cabaret episode, cutting the more loquacious Moira-isms and replacing it with more sincere dialogue since that's what the scene needed.

That scene puts a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every single time. It’s perfection. Hearing how selfless she was in her contributions makes me happy as it confirms what I had long believed, that she was a pretty great human being in addition to her incredible talent.

When I first started watching Schitt’s Creek, Moira’s speech patterns were a little off-putting to me. She reminded me of a drunk lady (probably my mom, but that’s a different story), so I didn’t “get” it. It grew on me, but it wasn’t until my most recent watch that I truly understood what she was doing and the genius behind it. She truly was perfect at her craft and I’ll miss her.

thrilling_me_softly 5 days ago +136
That’s what is so great about the show, you hate all the characters at the start but they grow on you as the grow in the show.

RollTh3Maps 5 days ago +71
We watched like half or a little more of the first season and stopped. We needed a break; it was kind of hard for us to watch. Not so much because we thought it was bad, the characters were just so grating. All of the hype made us go back, and we flew through the rest of the series. It's amazing, and those initial episodes were vital in setting up the things we loved later in the series.
71
andyraylan 5 days ago +21
We made it through the first two episodes on our original watch. The eating scenes with Roland were nauseating and we assumed it would just be a lot of broad, sometimes gross-out humor. But we went back to it and stuck it out, thankfully. Roland even surprised us, and we just fast forward his eating scenes.
21
zuuzuu 5 days ago +12
Roland almost put me off entirely in the early episodes. I can't stand that kind of character. I'm glad I stuck with it because while he never grew on me every other character did.
12
andyraylan 4 days ago +4
Totally. Except…We thought he did kind of grow, in his way. He surprised us with his progressive perspective on sexuality and he did come to Johnnie’s defense in the end. But I do see how he could be your least favorite character, he was pretty annoying most of the time.
4
thrilling_me_softly 5 days ago +20
I can see that. I streamed the whole first two seasons when I watched it. I agree with you, I don’t believe I would have stuck with it if they remained as grating as they were in the first few episodes.
20
dancingbriefcase 5 days ago +18
That's kind of why I like the earlier seasons the most. Don't get me wrong, it was wholesome to see them grow and become better people, but I can't help but love the selfish characters. Like Seinfeld or Always Sunny

23
RHPhotoGuy 5 days ago +22
Hate is a strong word. Roland is definitely annoying up until the end but he has a sort of redeeming quality in his character. Just like it's portrayed in the dinner scene at the restaurant when the Roses explain to their "friends" from their past life that none of them were there for them but the Schitt's were there when they were at their lowest.

I'm watching Levy's new show, Big Mistakes, and the brother/sister chemistry is on par with David/Alexis. Laurie Metcalf, as their mother, is brilliant in a different, but not lesser, way to Catherine O'Hara.
10
defineloser 5 days ago -2
They could do it. Nothing is impossible. But they would have a humongous void to fill and there would be a ton of pressure on whatever new characters they introduce.

GoodGoodGoody 5 days ago +5
Yup. Ironic that in a post singing Cathrine’s great qualities everyone is missing the essential question: What would she want? The answer of course is an irreverent, intelligent, serious, ludicrous, well written, funny show. With a gentle touch Schitt’s Creek is prime for a sequel that it will never get, especially under the heavily heavily heavily subsidized Canadian content program (doubly so at CBC). Stevie and David-Patrick stories have many miles on them.

NCC75567 5 days ago +1
I totally get why the people who knew and loved and worked directly with her wouldn't want to do it. But as a fan, I kind of think....why not? If it's bad, then just skip it. You can always stop watching after s6e14.

> He recalled Seth Rogen once telling him that O’Hara would send emails the night before a shoot that said “Gentlemen, some thoughts about the scenes we’re shooting tomorrow,” and “it would be a full top-to-tail rewrite.” Reading that quote, I can't help but hear it in Moira's voice
