CBS Explores New Paths for 'Late Show' Slot as Colbert Exit Nears - LateNighter

First episode's line up: A debate between Alan Dershowitz and Ben Shapiro. The topic: US aid to Israel, are we doing too little or not enough? After that, a special appearance by Erika Kirk's pyrotechnics operator, who shows Bari just what it takes to properly and respectfully rig a memorial service stage for detination.

I do wonder if they'll try to give her a Tom Snyder kind of interview show. She thinks she's a huge draw when no one cares. Would probably be c**** but incredibly unpopular.

And our special guest this week is… JD Vance! *Again!*

> A second option would follow a model CBS is already using at 12:35 a.m. When After Midnight ended its run last June after host Taylor Tomlinson opted to return to stand-up full time, the network effectively sold that hour of time to independent producer and comic Byron Allen. His long-running syndicated series Comics Unleashed now fills the s*** (his company sells the ads during that hour and keeps the proceeds). That's wild. Didn't know that.

Miss After Midnight tho, she was great running the show
63
statiky Mar 27, 2026 +28
I truly dont understand why they couldn't find a new host. Taylor is a great comedian and did well on the show, but the idea no one else could fill her shoes and fill them well bothers me. CBS wanted to keep it going too.
28
rahga Mar 27, 2026 +13
CBS is known for having ridiculous expectations - a multi-billion dollar death star of content and broadcasting pinching pennies on flagship productions. It'll only get worse under new ownership.

safarifriendliness Mar 27, 2026 +25
I think traditional late night is just dead, the podcast market fills that need for the audience too well. Closest thing we’ll have soon is whatever TeamCoco puts out. Could be a blessing in disguise, someone told me Colbert’s about to write a new LotR movie and if I’m being honest I’d rather he work on that
25
normankrasnerkc Mar 27, 2026 +8
I like Conan's podcast, and I'm happy for him but I miss him on TV
8
abarrelofmankeys Mar 28, 2026 +1
The skits and remotes were what made it. I don’t hate the travel show but it’s too scripted to fill the voids of the remotes, like it’s trying a little too much. I still appreciate him and the crew so I listen to the pod but it’s not the same.
1
hackingdreams Mar 27, 2026 +4
They didn't *want* to find a new host.
4
junaidnk Mar 27, 2026 +3
Now in hindsight, it would’ve met the same fate as Colbert
3
44problems Mar 27, 2026 +2
Yeah it probably would have ended this May too. As soon as they didn't replace her, had a bad feeling about Colbert.
2
Semper-Fido Mar 27, 2026 +2
Lisa Gilroy did an incredible job stepping in for Taylor, and would have been a great get, seeing that she is popping up in more and more series
2
-Average_Joe- Mar 27, 2026 +2
Me too, it was a fun show.
2

They’re gonna try to make a late night show with some a****** dudebro manosphere comedian

Calcutec_1 Mar 27, 2026 +9
Who?
9
-Average_Joe- Mar 27, 2026
Goatboy, which could be fun if Brewer did the bit and was neutral.
0
Calcutec_1 Mar 27, 2026 -2
Im still not following..
-2
-Average_Joe- Mar 27, 2026 +5
Brewer was a comedian most famous for being on SNL(Goatboy being the character of his I find the most memorable) and playing a stoner in Halfbaked. He dropped out of the mainstream for a while and resurfaced as a MAGA.
5
sstelmaschuk Mar 27, 2026 +4
There go my fond memories of his “Joe Pesci Show” skits…
4
CocoBangBall Mar 28, 2026 +2
He actually smoked himself retarded
2

Brian from Half Baked ! Why didn’t you say so :) Sad that he’s gone MAGA
2
Burgoonius Mar 27, 2026 +3
please god no - but honestly I wouldn't be surprised.
3
safarifriendliness Mar 27, 2026 +2
You know Theo Von is even the best option here. I’ve seen that dude admit he was wrong on camera even if he’s never learned his lesson
2
gigashadowwolf Mar 27, 2026 +46
It would be kinda funny to have Adam Corolla have his own late night show to compete with Jimmy Kimmel given their history. But I have a feeling they will go with someone more like Andrew Schultz.
46
ThinkThankThonk Mar 27, 2026 +27
I'm learning in this thread that a lot of people I only know through YouTube algorithms are maga
27
gigashadowwolf Mar 27, 2026 +8
YouTube skews male and also skews right wing. The algorithm isn't designed to push the agenda of the right, but it ends up doing so because the viewership does skew right and the algorithm follows what's popular.
8
debaser64 Mar 27, 2026 +8
Viewship skews male>males skew slightly right right wing>algorithm picks up the trend>algorithm promotes the trend>more males exposed to right wing>algorithm picks up on the trend>algorithm promotes the trend>more males exposed to right wing… rinse, repeat.
8
gigashadowwolf Mar 27, 2026 +3
Exactly!
3
clydefrog811 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Ew you’re right
1
mike10dude Mar 27, 2026 +1
He actually did have a nightly late night in the mid 2000s for a little bit
1
Joey-WilcoXXX Mar 27, 2026 +6
And they’re going to market it as completely different than Colbert since they acted like he was the biggest money drain in history even though they’ll do the exact same thing just ‘unwoke’
6
ice-eight Mar 27, 2026 +5
Maybe Rob Schneider will find a new charity now that the Adam Sandler coattails aren’t getting him much work
5
smurfsundermybed Mar 27, 2026 +5
Perfect. Kimmel can add Elle King to his band as counterprogramming.
5
accelfaiz Mar 27, 2026 +15
They'll just subcontract it to someone like Joe Rogen
15
44problems Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yeah I wonder if they'll just air an existing podcast.

2

And it'll be the worst rated thing on television. And yet, they won't cancel it, because that's not the point.
2
I_Cut_Shows Mar 27, 2026 +4
Ya. It’s going to be some self serious asshat like Tony.
4
-Average_Joe- Mar 27, 2026 +4
He isn’t necessarily manosphere or dudebro but a revival of the Chevy Chase show would fill the a****** requirement.
4
Gaugzilla Mar 27, 2026 +6
The whole hour would just be Chevy’s caretaker reminding him where he is and what he’s doing.
6
-Average_Joe- Mar 27, 2026 +3
Over/under on a replacement late night show lasting longer than the Chevy Chase show?
3
Dallywack3r Mar 27, 2026 +2
“You’re Chevy Chase…and I’m not.”
2
Independent_Wrap_321 Mar 28, 2026 +1
We’re full circle now; I love Colbert’s roast of Chevy Chase. I think that’s the last time I watched him though, lol.
1
mike10dude Mar 27, 2026
Just putting on the video version of different popular podcasts every night like Netflix is now doing might work out okay
0
math-yoo Mar 27, 2026 +19
The failure will be the best part.
19
Overall-Bullfrog5433 Mar 27, 2026 +38
Whatever it is I won’t be watching it. I watch Colbert till he is gone then no more trumpy CBS.
38
OdetotheGrimm Mar 27, 2026 +46
So they lied when they said it wasn’t Colbert and that it was the model of late shows being too expensive and not working in modern times?
46
Trapezoidal_Sunshine Mar 27, 2026 +39
Yep. They’re going to do what another commenter mentioned and try a right-leaning version of a late night show. But it’ll be half-assed and even less funny than late night shows already are. Then when it bombs they’ll find a way to blame the left.
39
NCC75567 Mar 27, 2026 +7
“Millennials killed late night talk shows”
7
rahga Mar 27, 2026 +9
The problem with the "too epensive" argument is that these cornerstone shows have budgets in the low-millions despite being part of networks worth tens of billions. If the stock market crashes - as it should - suddenly c**** shows that have an audience actually might make sense again. Right now, networks are billionaire-owned hedge funds that "create content" on the side, no better than dying malls that keep growing book value.
9
BenderBenRodriguez Mar 27, 2026 +2
They'll make something cheaper. If not just give over the network time to the affiliates or do what they did with the s*** after Colbert's and sell it to someone else.
2
ComputerDecent463 Mar 27, 2026 -7
No? Most podcasts don’t cost 80 million to produce and employ 200 people, yet they get the same, if not more views. The economic model of sets, expensive guests and a writers room of 20 people, doesn’t make sense anymore.
-7
mike10dude Mar 27, 2026
You obviously didn't read the article it is a opinion piece from someone that didn't talk to anybody involved with the network

Amazing_Stress_8820 Mar 27, 2026
Get your facts out of here! Now where’s my pitchfork?
0
amurica1138 Mar 27, 2026 +22
QVC, Daystar/TBN programming or NCIS re-runs. Or all three on a rotation. That's about the only audience that will still watch post-Colbert.
22
Vio_ Mar 27, 2026 +3
Also nursing homes

amurica1138 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Pretty sure those are the same thing at this point, or soon will be.

I’ve explored a new path in avoiding anything paramount or cbs related.
27
ClintSlunt Mar 27, 2026 +10
Clickbait/ragebait. **The article is Bill Carter's thoughts and opinions. The article has zero quotes or press releases from CBS leadership.** Also Mr Carter is missing the fourth option, as it is not "something new". Bringing back "crime time after prime time" (re-runs of crime procedurals). You can see how that works now after your local CBS's news cast on Sundays.

PatrioticHotDog Mar 27, 2026 +3
Thank you for posting the comment I was looking for. This link is as useless trash as the classic "When is so-and-so season x coming out? Here's what we know" articles. TV blogs are a waste of the Internet.

I was thinking, one avenue that could be good is an import of the UK’s *House of Games* format. It’s the perfect show for that time of night as it’s a comedy with celebrity guests, but it’s light and breezy and gives your mind a workout like a good puzzle book.
1

They had After Midnight but that ended last year.

Give Conan a show again, you cowards.
1

Well Conan already runs a podcast network plus the salary he would demand wouldn’t be worth it. Plus he won’t give into Paramount
