All thanks to Larry and David Ellison, the MAGA oligarchies, who bought the CBS/Paramount in 2024.

The insanity is the radio network is dirt c****. The infrastructure is long established, and they don’t need expensive talent to assemble and read the stories. The often reused material from the television news. It supplied a trusted name for news to 700 radio stations in cities and rural towns. This hurts an already struggling medium of radio for little gain.

TriceCreamSundae Mar 20, 2026 +143
Yeah, but the truth might accidentally slip out on those airwaves and we certainly can’t have that
143
Straight_Page_8585 Mar 20, 2026 +67
The point is to destroy it for good because creating a new radio network from scratch is prohibitively expensive
67
262Mel Mar 20, 2026 +49
A lot of these companies local AM stations here that used CBS or ABC now use Fox as their news source and for added shows on weekends. It’s gross.

The CBS affiliated radio station in my city is the #1 news radio station in my entire state. I think they’re just killing off CBS News as punishment for not being Trumpy enough
34
8JHF8 Mar 21, 2026 +6
Could NPR offer to sell 3 and 6 minute news updates to these affiliates who now have a space to fill? This could provide a small amount of additional needed revenue to NPR.

ciscorandori Mar 20, 2026 -20
translate 700 radio stations to verified listeners and ad revenue. Going up or going down? We liked Walter Cronkite on both radio and TV, but he's still dead. Much like radio.

I'm so tired of profit being the only metric of success that matters. What's the profit on radio news? Who gives a f***. Not everything should be profitable, especially reporting the news.

19
ArenjiTheLootGod Mar 20, 2026 +36
Seeing as how CBS' ratings have tanked during her tenure I'm pretty the other networks don't want that either. News orgs need to figure out that they're not going to pull in large numbers by being Diet Fox News, the people that would want that already have Fox News and many of those people are quitting Fox News to watch actual Nazis and/or weird AI conspiracy theory videos on YouTube.
36
cogman10 Mar 21, 2026 +9
> I'm pretty the other networks don't want that either. Man I wish this was about ratings. It's not. CBS doesn't care about ratings, they were purchased and the management was replaced specifically to report news the way Larry Ellison wants it to be reported. Ditto for the Washington Post and Bezos. Ratings has absolutely nothing to do with it, and if people stop watching, all the better for the billionaires. They'll simply shutter the channels and nobody will care because they were long destroyed.
9
trasofsunnyvale Mar 21, 2026 +3
If the people owning the network don't care about it as a business, this won't matter. Do you think the Ellisons want CNN because they want its revenue? F*** no. We've created a world of such staggering wealth inequality that now billionaires are happy to lose billions (even if much of it isn't their actual cash) just to advance their power hungry agendas. Bezos doesn't give a f*** about if Wapo is profitable, he's just exerting influence.

From the OP article: >[Bari] Weiss is not a stranger to CBS’ storied history. Addressing her staff in January, three months into her job as CBS News boss, she invoked the network’s legendary newsman Walter Cronkite as a symbol of old thinking and said that if the network continues with its current strategy, “we’re toast.” >Weiss announced the hiring of 18 new contributors and said CBS News needs to do stories that will “surprise and provoke — including inside our own newsroom.” >Weiss, founder of the Free Press website and without broadcast news experience before being hired by CBS parent Paramount’s new management, has quickly become a headline-maker and polarizing figure in journalism. She held a “60 Minutes” story critical of President Donald Trump’s deportation policy from being broadcast for a month and has critics watching to see if she’s moving the network in a Trump-friendly direction.

Well, since CBS's bending of the knee I've been waiting for a reason to take WBBM off my car radio. One of the oldest radio stations, 102 years old, started broadcasting only four years after radio became practical. Home of WBBM's Radio Mystery Theater in the 70s-80s. Sad to see it go.
9
The_Stork Mar 20, 2026 +2
WBBM isn’t going anywhere; it’s owned by Audacy. CBS hasn’t owned any radio stations for years. The station just has to find a new top of hour newscast.
2
TheBigPhysique Mar 21, 2026 +1
I'm betting they'll turn to AP Radio. It's fairly similar with quick headlines and short segments. And I believe they also do an hourly news recap. I've noticed a few times since 2017 audacy purchase they already use some AP Radio for segments during the hour (not at the top obviously).

39
waywardflaneur Mar 20, 2026 +15
Yep. As much as 'The Liberal Media' is a conservative trope, objectively speaking it is not totally false (radio excepted). It doesn't reflect conservative values, no matter if that's because reality has a liberal bias. The goal is to tear all that down. See twitter, CBS, Washington Post, VOA, etc.
15
dmthoth Mar 21, 2026 +1
I mean, in 2024 CBS/Paramount was bought by the Oracle founder, Larry Ellison and his son David, who are MAGA zionists. So technically it became non-liberal media through that way. And it goes same with Washington Post, which was purchased by Jeff Bezos in 2013. Legacy jounalism is literally destroyed by all those oligarchies.

From the NBC News article: >NEW YORK — CBS News said Friday it is shutting down its storied radio news service after nearly 100 years of operation as part of a round of layoffs, blaming a shift in radio station programming strategies and challenging economic times. >When it went on the air in September 1927, CBS News Radio was the precursor to the entire network, giving a youthful William S. Paley a start in the business. Famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow delivered reports from London during World War II as part of the service. >Today CBS News Radio provides material to an estimated 700 stations across the country, and is known best for its top-of-the-hour news roundups. The service will end on May 22, the network said Friday. >“While this was a necessary decision, it was not an easy one,” CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and president Tom Cibrowski said in a memo to staff on Friday. >Along with newspapers, radio was the dominant force in how Americans got their news from the 1920s through the 1940s, with Americans listening to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats” during the Depression, before the format was largely supplanted by television in the 1950s. Radio is even less a force in modern society, with the world online and on phones. Those seeking audio often turn to podcasts before radio. >The front page of CBS News’ website did not immediately carry news of the demise.

Vio_ Mar 20, 2026 +23
I'm glad NBC referenced Paley and Murrow in this obituary.

This is how dumb this woman is, NPR has become one of my go to podcast places, my wife listens to CNNs 5 good things. There is a space for radio as dynamic podcasts you want to swing hearts and minds thats the way to do it , just transition them dont cut the knees out. Stupid woman stupid strategies.
11
AdRevolutionary3583 Mar 20, 2026 +6
Hiring Weiss was a mistake to begin with. She has never been a real journalist and had no credentials to run a critically acclaimed news powerhouse like CBS. She's literally taken them in the wrong direction and the abysmal ratings shows it. Closing down the radio news service is yet another misstep from an unqualified executive who has no idea what real people in the real world want from their tv news station. SMH

The closing of the 4th branch of government happened in the late 90s when journalistic integrity got sold to the internet for advertising pennies. When the reds saw B Clinton use the internet and win, they caught on.
7
not_suddenly_satire Mar 20, 2026 +10
> The closing of the 4th branch of government happened .....when Reagan deregulated the broadcast industry and ownership limits so all the newspapers, TV and radio stations could be bought up by right-wing corporations.

You mean after all the people decided to stop paying for news and to survive the media had to continuallly get more and more inflamatory and clickbaity to get eyeballs? People would much rather was national news for free than pay for their local newspaper. People didn't want to pay for magazines with their in-depth research, oh no they wanted stuff RIGHT NOW and truth be damned just be first.

Fair to point out that if this was bringing in loads of revenue it wouldn't be happening. Two things can be true, such as Bari Weiss is a shithead *and also* relatively few people are listening to CBS radio news. We can agree that the loss of platforms/jobs is a net-negative, but the amount of pearl clutching that happens when media conglomerates shutter something nobody really cared about before is kind of ridiculous.

I hope not. Mine has been using CBS since way before it went down the drain with the Paramount merger. I live in a liberal area so I’d be surprised if they went with Fox, might as well just shut down too at that point…

Consequence of putting a partisan propagandist in charge of the news division... and apparently [much of the rest of the news division is being fired as well](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/20/business/media/cbs-news-bari-weiss-layoffs.html). Weiss couldn't have performed her mandate better if (if?) she had planned the downfall. They should bring in Colbert as the Chief, if they want to save the division.

msr42day Mar 20, 2026 +3
Looks likev another of Admin47's requests to remove any source beyond its influence. First, it was PBS/NPR, then the Paramount purchase of WB and its news outlets, and now this. Just remember, it's much easier to throttle back the internet than HF/AM radio. As long as there's electricity, they can operate. All it takes for internet takedown is a ruthless enough virus. Lots of reduction of access to verified info about US international involvement is occurring quietly.
3
Flick_W_McWalliam Mar 20, 2026 +3
The CBS radio news, which I doubt many people here have listened to, is literally someone reading a few news headlines at the top of the hour on the long stagnant network of terrestrial radio stations. Because talk and sports stations (these are on the AM band of radio) tend to be conservative, listeners have long hated the CBS radio news, which is relentlessly anti-American in tone and story selection. And despite its small audience, it still manages to step on a rake as often as the TV news division.
3
condensermike Mar 20, 2026 +1
Wouldn't want to be an actual news source or anything. Just a propaganda mouth-piece.
