Didn’t know Byron Allen is considered conservative.
10
Fullertonjr 6 days ago +40
He isn’t. He is just the next person up who is willing to just stick to the script and just do their job of being a distraction to what is actually occurring in the world and in this country.
40
happyscrappy 6 days ago +18
He's just a guy who already produces Comics Unleashed, the show that has been a stand in for various late night shows, like Corden's show, etc. He makes mediocre content cheaply. That's why he's been called upon. Selection of him is likely not mostly about politics.
18
therealwillhepburn 6 days ago +12
He’s getting called upon because he’s paying for the spot.
12
happyscrappy 6 days ago +6
i.e. the show is being aired similarly to an infomercial. Wonder if there is any ad share (revenue or barter) other than that with the affiliates?
6
Mount_Treverest 6 days ago +7
He's a billionaire, it's a prerequisite.
7
F-N-M-N 6 days ago +4
Paper billionaire. And I don’t buy it that anyone would buy his company for $1B+.
4
Mount_Treverest 6 days ago +1
They're cable channels like BET or the weather channel. I mean not hugely valuable compared to Netflix or something like that but still gets left on certain places. Tubi and stuff like that will buy up the content. Daniel Tosh owned half of MTV for awhile until selling it off to CBS.
1
8JHF8 6 days ago +4
He definitely isn't. The issue here is that he is effectively buying the time s***, making much cheaper shows and collecting the ad revenue. CBS profits no matter what he does with the time.

CBS is dead to me. 60 minutes last night sealed the deal. Franklin Graham is a liar and a hypocrite who will surely burn in hell for his sins.
289
greysweater72 6 days ago +59
Graham’s bit was nauseating & just the thought that he was on 60 minutes pissed me off.
59
ACW1129 6 days ago +22
What'd he say?
22
DeadPeanutSociety 6 days ago +14
I can't find anyone talking about what he actually said, but I looked him up and he is billed as "Trump's favorite preacher," so I imagine his record is bigoted in some very unsurprising ways.
14
ACW1129 6 days ago +2
Oh, Franklin is definitely not his father.
2
8JHF8 6 days ago +2
I'm not watching that garbage, but I know he recently not necessarily on 60 minutes argued against Pope Leo's message of peace. Argued in favor of the concept of "just war". He defended the administration's war prayers for death and told Trump his soul is secure. He accused Iran of wanting to use nuclear weapons when the only people floating those ideas recently are in this administration and an Israeli "news" show that included Ben-Gvir.

51
AuthorityAnarchyYes 6 days ago +62
And he sucked tremendously. Dude is obviously a genius behind the scenes, as he’s built a production empire. On camera, though, he’s as exciting as a box of grey rocks.
62
es_cl 6 days ago +16
I remember he had some entertainment show that would air random hours, like those syndicated shows that never make it on top ratings. I thought he was some D-list comedian actor. I got rid of cable in the 2000s, so he was out of mind out of sight for me for many many years.  Then some years ago, I heard the news of him buying the Weather Channel. I’m like, this dude was a business billionaire mogul. WTF?
16
broohaha 6 days ago +9
I thought the exact same thing! I assumed he was some struggling media personality doing the graveyard shift showing music videos and doing banal interviews at odd hours of the evening. Then fast forward to the Weather Channel news, I decided to read about him on Wikipedia. He’s clearly sharp behind the camera. Just extremely dull in front of one.
9
tacobooc0m 6 days ago +5
likely in front of the camera to avoid paying talent to do it. Another good business move. he‘s like the Dave Thomas of Late Night

1

I won’t dispute his ability to make money. But I hesitate to call grifters genius. Producing low quality content directed towards people who are easily manipulated is not genius. It’s a fairly common business model, most people would simply rather not be associated with it

6
DizzyLead 6 days ago +3
He’s also behind what has to be the worst TV game show, “Funny You Should Ask,” which is basically “‘Hollywood Squares’ without the complicated tic-tac-toe stuff,” with D-list celebrity panels (plus Byron, you wouldn’t want to have to pay for another celebrity) and a contestant pool that definitely wasn’t chosen for their smarts.

I've done some paid audience work for Comics Unleashed, and it's some of the most staged, unfunny conversations I've ever heard. I think I've only recognized two comics out of the many times I've been there.

kevint1964 6 days ago +4
There's no natural conversation flow at all.
4

Well yeah, Byron has to set them up to do their set. They’re stand-up comedians who aren’t used to doing their comedy in a conversational way. Maybe that’s why it seems unnatural.

Byron Allen is so damn weird to me - His whole empire was built on going to press gaggles and acting like he knew celebs. He then spun that into an empire. He has zero charism. No charm. No warmth, empathy, humor, or recognizable human emotion. But, I'll be damned if that b****** isn't driven as hell. I will be sure to avoid anything he produces like the plague it is.

Late night television was already on the way out, Trump or no Trump. People just don't watch it like they used to. CBS is going from an expensive, unprofitable show they produce to a 3rd party paying for the s***. Even if ratings crater, it won't matter because its within their expectations anyway.

He was a co-host of a TV show called Real People that started in 1979. He's been around since then and occasionally hosted some shows (including late night stuff) but he got incredibly rich as a TV producer with very favorable production deals. Like, he's probably a billionaire.
