Reading the full quote, it seems less like she's announcing that this is a thing, and more jist reminding us that the ones who flaunt their bodies most the are typically the ones compensating.

I think her point is, even Chaka showed skin in her '70s and '80s eras., but she always had the actual musical talent to back it up. Seriously, she can play drums, piano, and obviously sing. And she never had a problem showing skin on stage, but you almost didn't notice half the time because her vocals would catch your attention the whole damn time.

I would say that having a "great" range doesn't necessarily mean that you have "good" vocals. There's a lot more to it than that.

Prior to MTV most people would only see the vast majority of music acts either at a concert or in a magazine or on the cover of a record. It’s true that image has always mattered but currently, in the era of social media and autotune, it matters at a fever pitch compared to when Chaka Khan broke out.

I think in our hyper-p********** era the baseline of what constitutes 'sex sells' has just shifted a lot. Some mainstream pop stars are basically a singing strippers that in ye olde days we would've seen performing in brother type bars. You can't get away with showing just an ankle anymore.

I came to the comments solely to look for Tate. SHE CANNOT SING. Her entire image is based on sex appeal and auto-tuned cookie-cutter vocals.

Go ahead and say out loud that Chaka Khan is not a damn good singer. She for sure flaunted what she had, no question. She had the chops to say, "As hot as my body is, my voice is that much hotter," and expect little in the way of argument.

Chaka’s quote is a reaction to the hypersexual nature of media and advertising that has been exacerbated since the 80s-90s. And she’s right. Sexuality in media is an overt crutch. People like Gal Gadot literally wouldn’t have jobs if the industry was an actual meritocracy. That’s what Chaka is alluding to. Your comment reads like “WAR ON CHRISTMAS!!!” sensationalism. If anyone is railing against sexuality, it’s because it’s been rammed down society’s throat for years with little actual merit to back it up.

You really think so? I just watched her Tiny Desk and thought it was great. She doesn’t have a BIG voice, but I like what she does with what she’s got!

Paula was a choreographer and could dance plus had a passable voice that she worked on and improved significantly, her third album being the greatest showcase of her evolution as a singer and songwriter.
