Chaka Khan Says Pop Stars Use Their Bodies To Cover Up Bad Vocals
Chaka Khan says today's pop stars use "butts and body parts" to cover up what they can't do vocally. And she's not sorry about it.

Nah come on now, doja cat might have her share of being problematic but when you get past the edginess, there’s a lot of artistry in her music and a lot of good taste. There’s not a single Ice Spice song which I’ve listened to that is not trash

Absolutely, the first person I thought of. I don’t even find her attractive. I actually don’t understand the appeal. She does have a banging body though.

You say she has a banging body, but also that you don't understand the appeal? That IS the appeal lol

Yall realize both singing and rapping are considered vocals right?
26
WhichHoes Mar 27, 2026 +7
From Chaka Khan I would think she is specifically talking about one rather than both, also when including the term "pop star". If it was about rapping, it typically would be attacking writing or lyricism, not the vocal behind it.

Yup, its literally the message of the song. Once it mattered what you looked like on TV it changed who would succeed in music.
1
phxees Mar 27, 2026 +14
People act as if celebrities leave their house and go find a journalist to say new artists use their bodies more than their voices. She likely wanted to promote her new music and tour and someone asked her what she thinks of the new artists. Then they write an article on that one statement and ignore the rest of the 45 minute interview.
14
rjmacready Mar 28, 2026 +4
Exactly my point. I intended my comment to be a critique of sensationalized headlines and nonsense news. Buzz and engagement.

5
adoreroda Mar 27, 2026 +101
Sex has always sold even in her era, and an artist's aesthetic or brand is similarly as important than their vocal range if not more In addition to that as well, having good vocals doesn't automatically mean you make good music. There are lots of musicians out there who have great vocal range but make very mid or bad music.

Reading the full quote, it seems less like she's announcing that this is a thing, and more jist reminding us that the ones who flaunt their bodies most the are typically the ones compensating.
26
MontyDysquith Mar 28, 2026 +1
I don't even think that much is true. Nicole Scherzinger started in the Pussycat Dolls of all things, but her voice is pretty incredible.
1
zeruch Mar 27, 2026 +23
I think her point is, even Chaka showed skin in her '70s and '80s eras., but she always had the actual musical talent to back it up. Seriously, she can play drums, piano, and obviously sing. And she never had a problem showing skin on stage, but you almost didn't notice half the time because her vocals would catch your attention the whole damn time.
23
WuTang4thechildrn Mar 27, 2026 +4
But how many people do you think would go to her show because of her look and not her vocals.
4
zeruch Mar 28, 2026 +2
Chaka? During her peak period? She was considered extremely attractive and a style icon during her Rufus years, and I suspect quite a few didn't mind that at all: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fgKhuqNtxw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fgKhuqNtxw)

I'd watch '70s Chaka Khan do a 14 hour mime routine and be just as mesmerized at the 741st time she pulled herself sideways on the invisible rope as I was the first

I would say that having a "great" range doesn't necessarily mean that you have "good" vocals. There's a lot more to it than that.
3
jamerson537 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Prior to MTV most people would only see the vast majority of music acts either at a concert or in a magazine or on the cover of a record. It’s true that image has always mattered but currently, in the era of social media and autotune, it matters at a fever pitch compared to when Chaka Khan broke out.
1
TheyTukMyJub Mar 28, 2026 +1
I think in our hyper-p********** era the baseline of what constitutes 'sex sells' has just shifted a lot. Some mainstream pop stars are basically a singing strippers that in ye olde days we would've seen performing in brother type bars. You can't get away with showing just an ankle anymore.

Or using Christina Milian like in Play
17
TheyTukMyJub Mar 28, 2026 +8
* **Ashanti's Contribution:** Ashanti has confirmed that she wrote "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)" and recorded demo vocals for both that song and "I'm Real". She stated that producers kept her hook, background vocals, and ad-libs in the final versions. * **Production Methods:** Producers at Murder Inc., notably Irv Gotti, blended the demo vocals with Jennifer Lopez's vocals. In some instances, it is highly difficult to distinguish between the two voices, particularly on the choruses. * **"Play" and Christina Milian:** Similar accusations arose for the song "Play," where the demo singer, Christina Milian, sings the entire chorus. * **"Jenny from the Block":** Backup vocalist Natasha Ramos claimed she sang the chorus, bridge, and ad-libs on "Jenny From the Block".

I don’t think it’s been about the actual song performance vs the stage show in decades for pop artists. Even the ones really singing all have hella backing vocals, live auto tune, and pre recorded tracks masking their actual singing
5

Go ahead and say out loud that Chaka Khan is not a damn good singer. She for sure flaunted what she had, no question. She had the chops to say, "As hot as my body is, my voice is that much hotter," and expect little in the way of argument.

I know you're joking but it's dependent on the definition of wetness and maybe also the context. So its not a simple answer.

Yes. Water isn’t necessarily wet. And I was joking. 🙃

11
ThatSimsKidFromUni Mar 27, 2026 +11
People don't hate sexuality. They hate sexuality with no substance. People are tired of sexuality and nothing behind it. It's not shocking or entertaining anymore like it used to be. You can find some of the most scandalous videos online now so no one finds sexuality interesting anymore.
11
atlas-hugs Mar 27, 2026 +10
Respectfully, this is a dumb take. We are less religious (and Puritan-minded generally) than we’ve ever been. Though people are having less sex overall (due to the late stage capitalist hellscape that isolates people and destroys community), ideological sexual liberation is at an all-time high. Chaka’s quote is a reaction to the hypersexual nature of media and advertising that has been exacerbated since the 80s-90s. And she’s right. Sexuality in media is an overt crutch. People like Gal Gadot literally wouldn’t have jobs if the industry was an actual meritocracy. That’s what Chaka is alluding to. Your comment reads like “WAR ON CHRISTMAS!!!” sensationalism. If anyone is railing against sexuality, it’s because it’s been rammed down society’s throat for years with little actual merit to back it up.
10
pengalor Mar 27, 2026 +5
> ideological sexual liberation is at an all-time high That's simply not true. You probably believe that because you are on a left-leaning website and probably live in a left-leaning area. Puritanical ideals (especially those rooted in misogyny) have been on the rise since 2016 and have arguably never been stronger and it's seeping into the younger generations.

throwawayshirt2 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Right > “The ones who are doing the most physicalities, with their butts and stuff, and their body parts, are the ones that usually are compensating for what they don’t have.” I feel like that's most applicable to Tate. Sabrina's dance routines are cute. Tate's dance routines look like what I used to see in the strip club. So many spread leg/crotch shots it's embarrassing.

:American Idol judge Paula Abduul has entered the chat:
2
Beginning-Shock1520 Mar 27, 2026 +5
Paula was a choreographer and could dance plus had a passable voice that she worked on and improved significantly, her third album being the greatest showcase of her evolution as a singer and songwriter. Only one of her videos is raunchy, Cold Hearted. In the rest of them, she's respectably dressed.
5
FandomMenace Mar 27, 2026 +2
Wait, you think she wrote her own songs? Cold Hearted was written by Elliot Wolff, as were many of her hits. She barely even has writing credits. Yes, she is an incredible choreographer, but she literally exemplifies what this post is about.
2
Beginning-Shock1520 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yes, Cold Hearted and Straight Up were written by Elliot Wolff. That was her first album, where she only had 1 co-writing credit. But on her second and third albums, she had at least 4 co-writing credits for songs including The Promise of a New Day and My Love Is for Real. She also initially wrote Kylie Minogue's Spinning Around for her own comeback album that never happened. So actually she wrote a good few of her songs and her vocals on songs like My Love Is for Real are her strongest.

She's 100% right, labels have always compensated for the singers lack of skill / talent if they have a marketable look. Engineering and Production can hide flaws but a tour will expose you. So long as it generates revenue they do not care. lol.

Very few “artists” today can bag a three take vocal/instrumental you name it. BITD you had to hit that shit first or second take and overdubs were limited. Chaka right!

They've done this forever - certainly even during Chaka's time. Google "Sabrina Boys" for her contemporary equivalent of the current stack of impossibly profitable posteriors

Many of the really big music stars have always had sex appeal on some level. The ones who stick around have actual musical talent and record memorable songs too.

Some do. Some don't. The music entertainment industry isn't just about vocal chops. It's also about visual aesthetics whether through dance, music video visuals, or just being really damn pretty.  Sometimes an artist that isn't conventionally attractive can make it to stardom but that's pretty rare. Other times someone who is hot but with little talent makes it to stardom and that's a lot less rare. This is seen even more with female artists, since sometimes a man can look like Post Malone and make it through.

This is not new. This is a common practice in the industry. Even during her time, granted it was done in a different fashion but still.

Didn't we go through this with Madonna in the early 90's when we found out she was using soundtracks at her "live" concerts? My personal but, here, would be Pink. She's in top physical form and she still has a great voice during live concerts. But thatsjustmyopinion

The first line I see in this article is > That’s not shade wrapped in diplomacy. That’s a verdict. > And when three legends — LaBelle, Mills, and Khan — all say the same thing independently? That’s not a generational gap. That’s a pattern. Stop posting AI slop.

She was as showing off her body back in the 1970's but I will say she had great vocals at least

Having an amazing voice is one way to entertain people. Putting on a pop music show is another. And we all get to decide which one we would rather attend. Do pop stars entertain the people who go to their shows and listen to their music? If so, I’m going to leave them alone even if I’m not going to their shows or listening to their music.

Does Chaka have an album or book coming out? Because she is sure coming in with a lot of attention seeking takes.

Shes in her mid 70s this is a boomer shakes fist at sky take. Just picture her screaming "back in my day pop stars walked ten miles in the snow to get famous."
1
FarAd2857 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Back in her day you couldn’t fix being pitchy with a plug in.. even overdubbing was expensive and time consuming, you just had to be really good.
3
pengalor Mar 27, 2026 +1
You say all this like backing tracks and lip-synching were impossible.
1
FarAd2857 Mar 28, 2026 +3
Oh you’re not wrong, but you still had to lay it down first, on tape, with no pitch correction or quantization. It’s still not even close
