> Observers said they were told by a Minneapolis police officer at the scene that the men were bounty hunters and that the observers should keep their distance. So, local PD knew about them, knew they were enough of a threat to warrant a warning, and did nothing. Nice peacekeeping, LEOs.

Seems like a win if the trash takes itself out, just need to ensure they get blacklisted and never re-hired in law enforcement. May be a bit short staffed for a while, but better than having literal lawless thugs enforcing the law.
28
Same-Suggestion-1936 Apr 3, 2026 +5
Well good news! Instead of just dealing with being short staffed for a little while they gave them all raises so cops from other departments equally as vetted just transferred! Yep, you got that right! All the cops who didn't quit in shame over the George Floyd protests got substantial pay raises!

Police don’t prevent crime, they respond to it. On the off chance a cop shows up before a crime has been committed, they’ll escalate the situation to ensure that they get to arrest someone for something.
207
TheJonasVenture Apr 2, 2026 +37
Heck, and you are describing a real problem here of a real thing police do, arresting someone for resisting arrest, but even without the rot, if a cop is there and a crime hasn't been committed, they can't (or shouldn't) be arresting people because a cop thinks they could maybe break a law. And not talking like "assault and battery in progress". The system is just not set up in anyway to actually prevent crime. At best we have bad deterrents, but that's just "see how these other people got punished when they did that".
37
subnautus Apr 2, 2026 +25
Agreed, there's a disturbing number of cops who are willing to arrest someone for resisting arrest without understanding that's a *secondary* crime (as in, you'd have to be in the process of being arrested for a crime to resist said arrest and be charged for it). Just like there's a whole lot of cops out there who understand they can cite *Penn v Mimms* to order someone out of their car without realizing that *Penn v Mimms* is essentially *Terry v Ohio* for vehicles. Or, for that matter, that the pat down search *Terry v Ohio* allows is external only and first requires clearly articulable suspicion that: a crime has been or will be imminently committed, the detained person is armed, *and* the public or officer's safety is at risk. It's disturbing and pathetic that even with the standard set that low and cops being given the highest benefit of the doubt that so many of them still get it wrong.
25
Umikaloo Apr 2, 2026 +5
Preventing petty crime mostly means ensuring people aren't desperate enough to turn to crime, which would reduce the number of desperate workers to exploit, which would be counterproductive.

Reminder that police have no legal obligation to prevent or stop crime, per the Supreme Court. However, they must respond to a call. If you see something happening and they're doing nothing, call 911 and report it. Then they are duty bound to respond to it.

The value of bounty hunters in society go up in proportion to the incompetency of the law enforcers in maintaining control in the region . The more competent law enforcement is, the less bounty hunters are needed because the police can handle it themselves. If you live in a society where bounty hunters are thriving, that's a bad sign.
93
orbital_narwhal Apr 2, 2026 +22
A society that allows its government to share its monopoly on lawful violence with non-government organisations, even at the behest of said government, is going down a dangerous path. See the (attempted) drive on Moscow by the leader of Russia's mercenary force. (And I'm not saying that because I support Putin but because it risked putting the inhabitants of Russia in an even more precarious situation.)
22
Master_Flash Apr 2, 2026 +5
I think it's a neat idea against corruption or here in my country were the justice system is incompetent and there's lots of criminals on the run. In places like America, I don't think it makes much sense anymore.
5
BoldestKobold Apr 2, 2026 +29
In practice, most work for bail bondsmen in states that have cash bail. The bail bondsmen want to get their money back, so they hire people to track down the guy who skipped court. This isn't the old west with a privatized policing.
29
S10Galaxy2 Apr 2, 2026 +10
Yeah when people picture bounty hunters they imagine the old west “dead or alive” wanted posters. Bounty hunters back then were basically crowd funded cops, who accepted tax payer funded cash rewards for tracking and arresting, or if necessary killing wanted criminals that the local sheriffs either couldn’t or wouldn’t hunt down themselves. That era is long dead though. Governments these days only pay for information their own police can use, not arrests or bodies, so the only people for bounty hunters to find are just people delinquent on bond payments since bail bondsmen are the only ones paying bounties. The days of gunslingers hunting down gang members is long gone. Nowadays modern bounty hunters are essentially glorified debt collectors.
10
BoldestKobold Apr 2, 2026 +6
> Nowadays modern bounty hunters are essentially glorified debt collectors. Repo men for the body.
6
Jamoras Apr 2, 2026 +4

4

2
DaggerMoth Apr 2, 2026 +1
I mean without the bounty hunters there would be no bondsman and people would just be filling up the jails with no way out. Then again people are sitting in jail at Ludacris bonds not linked to their income or assets.
1
LordOfTrubbish Apr 2, 2026 +5
Some states already don't have bondsmen or bounty hunters. Depending on the situation, I believe the courts can generally just offer a 10-20% deposit option. About the same percent that a bondsman would charge as a non-refundable fee, except you actually get it back for showing up to court
5
Cynykl Apr 2, 2026 +4
Bail bond inflated bail to unattainable prices. Instead of giving the accuse another option to secure released until trial it inflated bail so much that it became the only option. Bond should be illegal. Either the person has shown to be so dangerous that they should be held until their hearing or the bail should be low enough that you do not need a bondsman to secure your release. Bring back the speedy trial and this become much less of an issue. There are a lot of ways to streamline the system to remove many of the first time low level offender from clogging up court dockets. A full judge should not be require to handle a first time petty shoplifting case. And full lawyers should not be needed to defend or prosecute such a case either.

Replica firearms. All the weight and feel of a real gun with none of the function. There’s an analogy hidden somewhere here.
249
AntagonisticFetus Apr 2, 2026 +104
Yeah, someone will draw down with a real gun, and shoot those idiots. That’s a really bad idea threatening anyone with any kind of gun. Especially a fake one.
104
Niceromancer Apr 2, 2026 +35
And the police will pounce on that person and beat them within an inch of their lives.
35
AntagonisticFetus Apr 2, 2026 +25
Not if some f****** idiot is pointing a GUN at you. That’s self defense in any context.
25
Niceromancer Apr 2, 2026 +22
Police will argue in court it was obvious the gun was fake. It doesn't have to make sense, it just has to convince 12 idiots its ok.
22
ManOf1000Usernames Apr 2, 2026 +28
The cops shoot people for pointing toy guns at people all the time, often with zero hesitation with the argument "i thought it was real". Replicas dont even have any color markings, not even the orange tip. You show a jury a replica and they will assume it is real.
28
Niceromancer Apr 2, 2026 +4
You are misunderstanding my point. I'm saying that since the cops are on the side of the people with the fake guns, they will come to the aid of those people if someone pulls a real gun on them. And cops easily swing court cases in their favor all the damn time. Also the cops really don't care if they lose in court later, they got to beat the shit out of someone they didn't like, and the tax payers pay the bill. Oh no the cops will get a 12 month paid vacation while their union finds a new precinct for them to work in.
4
Digitalgardens Apr 2, 2026 +9
I see your arguing a more existential point. That a jury will find the bounty hunters innocent. Obviously, no concrete answer can be given and which party will be deemed innocent. But the odds of the bounty hunters winning are slim at best. Within the world of bounty hunting, this exact problem persists. There are court cases where a bounty hunter brandished a replica firearm, and were charged with a felony. Bounty hunters are not law enforcement officers. Which is why charges are now being filed against these bounty hunters specifically by the Hennepin County Attorneys Office. Let’s discuss what actually happened: Bounty hunter 1: Brandished and pointed a replica Glock at a crowd of civilians. Bounty hunter 2: Fired a rifle containing a less than lethal projectile, its appearance and sound was indistinguishable from a real firearm. The bounty hunters were not in any real danger. So when they brandished their replica firearms as well as threatened the crowd with violence. That is a felony. Hence why they are being charged. I would bet confidently they do not see an innocent verdict.
9
Niceromancer Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yeah, nobody took the bait so the "bounty hunters" got slapped. But all it takes is one person to bite and the whole situation changes. Im not saying don't go to protests armed, do whatever you want within the confines of the law and what you are willing to risk. But the cops knew about it and didn't take steps to prevent it. They wanted it to escalate, they wanted a reason to crack heads. The protesters were just smart enough not to give it to them. I mean come on why where those idiots even there in the first place? Just to scare people on behalf of the cops.
2
Digitalgardens Apr 2, 2026 +2
Other than planted actors, there are genuinely people who enjoy attending events such as these to incite violence. They believe the officers have their back because they might be politically aligned with them. Nobody took their bait, like you said, and it exposed them out in the open. The video put a magnifying glass under them. Now we wait to hear a verdict. We can only hope they’re charged to the fullest extent.
2
Digitalgardens Apr 2, 2026 +9
If a gun is pointed at you, your immediate thought isn’t to examine if it’s fake. You’re pushed into fight or flight. In the time you could take to examine the gun you could be killed. All in the matter of a few seconds. If a police officer feels like a suspect will pull a gun on them they can open fire in fear of being harmed. But that logic also can apply to civilians. Nobody should point guns at anybody unless their life is threatened. Shootings are meticulously judged by coroners, autopsy examinations, ballistics etc. If it’s found that you killed somebody needlessly, you will be charged with manslaughter, and lose a majority of your life in a prison.
9
Niceromancer Apr 2, 2026 +6
You are missing my point entirely. The cops DONT CARE about the later court case....they want to beat on protestors, and will use any excuse to do so.
6
Sekh765 Apr 2, 2026 +4
You are using logic against an inherently corrupt and illogical force. Cops don't give a f***, and juries are overwhelmingly swayed by cop testimony even though it's usually bunk.
4
Digitalgardens Apr 2, 2026 +2
These are not police officers. They are bounty hunters. There is no incentive for police to protect them. Even if they were called as witnesses. A jury seeing a bounty hunter non-LEO point a replica gun, as well as firing a less than lethal from a rifle that sounded like an actual gunshot; their defense is crippled. Jury’s have ruled against the police before. May I refer you to the Afroman case that ended recently.
2
Same-Suggestion-1936 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Did you read the story? The Minneapolis Police Department was literally watching them the whole time, and did nothing even when they brandished fake firearms and shot pepper balls at protestors. Note bounty hunters do not have legal authority to do that.
1
Brilliant-Aide9245 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Just look up John Hurley. I don't know how anyone with half a brain can defend the police institution.
1
AntagonisticFetus Apr 2, 2026 +9
How the f*** would you know the gun was fake when it’s pointed at you? Regardless of whether it’s fake or not. That is a legitimate threat, and cops have shot plenty of people who have pointed fake guns at them. It’s a flimsy argument
9
UrsaUrsuh Apr 2, 2026 +2
The cops don't care. They'll always be on the side of the government. If it gives them an excuse to act like Jackboots then they'll jump on it.
2
Confron7a7ion7 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Exactly. Unless CLEARLY fake it must be assumed that the gun is real. Basic gun safety dictates that you only ever point a weapon at a target you've already decided to kill. The act of pointing a replica gun at someone SHOULD get you shot and the other person should get off with self defense.

That pretty much explains ICE itself. Replica officers that might *appear* to be genuine due to what they are wearing and carrying, but they lack the skills, training, and accountability.
3
JaronJervis Apr 2, 2026 +345
>“My first instinct, of course, when people had whistles, was that it was ICE,” Clark said. “When I talked to the other folks who were there, they clarified that they believed \[the men\] were bounty hunters.” >The man who threatened Clark and other observers with the pistol got back into a van with tinted windows as his bearded colleague warned people to get back and fired pepper balls at their feet. Video provided by witnesses and [first published on social media](https://bsky.app/profile/taylordahlin.com/post/3mg6vsr65n22r) shows the van bumping one of the observers as it merged into traffic. >For Clark, the experience brings home the uncertainty of this winter in Minnesota, of not knowing who groups of men with guns are, and of the frustration of feeling like local authorities aren’t willing to help. >“I did find it pretty shocking,’” Clark said. “Just random men in vests with guns could point their guns at people on the street who weren't doing anything.” Sounds like un-indicted domestic terrorists that can't get gun licenses Law Enforcement cosplay is all the new craze to the MAGA.

It's really weird when people use fake firearms in crimes because legally they aren't considered different than real firearms as long as people believe them to be real, which is the point of having the fake guns. Maybe you get a shave off the sentencing for a couple months but "See it's a fake gun, it's not armed robbery" doesn't work.

3
Paizzu Apr 2, 2026 +1
There have been cases where defendants have tried to avoid (unsuccessfully) the "armed career criminal" sentencing enhancements by committing robberies with replica firearms. IIRC, the *assault* portion of "assault with a deadly weapon" only requires the victim to believe the weapon is real. A perpetrator could use a painted hotdog and still receive the same penalty as if they had wielded a functional firearm.

71
frozenpissglove Apr 2, 2026 +28
The frequency that we see them catching rounds doesn’t match up with the frequency that we see them bullying people. I think they’re really good at target selection. Like a good predator, they can smell the weak. Part of the problem we face is these “thugs” and “alphas” are protected in some way, shape or form. Usually by a badge issued by the state. You put a bullet in these cunts, if you survive, is going to land you in prison.

“Something Vimes had learned as a young guard drifted up from memory. If you have to look along the shaft of an arrow from the wrong end, if a man has you entirely at his mercy, then hope like hell that man is an evil man. Because the evil like power, power over people, and they want to see you in fear. They want you to know you're going to die. So they'll talk. They'll gloat. They'll watch you squirm. They'll put off the moment of murder like another man will put off a good cigar. So hope like hell your captor is an evil man. A good man will kill you with hardly a word.” Terry Pratchett

These aren't toy guns like airsoft guns. These are less lethal guns AKA suped up paintball guns. They are less lethal, not non lethal. They can still kill or mane you. Plenty of people get killed or maimed by them when the cops use them. They are commonly known as "rubber bullet" guns. Except that rubber is just the coating on a metal ball. It'll still mess you up. You don't want to be on the receiving end of one of these guns.

even a finger in yer pocket saying you have a gun, is a felony. stupid.

Thankfully they weren't shot by "replica airsoft guns".

Pulling a fake gun a bunch of people seems like an even dumber choice than pulling a real one. Why risk starting a shootout in which you won't actually be able to participate? F****** stupid.

FjordExplorer Apr 2, 2026 +4
Not “fake” according to the article, just identical weapons that shoot less than lethal rounds it seems? Either way, a real easy way to get shot by actual lethal rounds by someone else legally holding, as bounty hunters hold no higher jurisdiction over other civilians.

What do bounty hunters even do in a modern context in the USA
8
ceapaire Apr 2, 2026 +28
Pretty much pull citizens arrests on people that skip bail. They're hired by the bail bondmen.

Say you get arrested and your bail is 20k. You can pay a bail bondsman 2k. He will front the whole 20k. Once you show up to court the bondsman gets his money back. Most of the time people will show up so it's easy money. However the times you decide to run the bondsman either is or hires bounty hunters to get you back. If they happen to capture you and get you to jail, they are given a bounty.

Do they still make TV shows where a camera crew follows them around?

In a different time they’d be wannabe slave catchers.

What the f*** is a bounty hunter?!? Someone who plays too much Red Dead Redemption and has a CCW?

Memitim Apr 2, 2026 +3
And yet more conservative terrorists demonstrating their dream of murdering Americans. But the immigrants are supposed to be the threat.
3
anticrom2 Apr 2, 2026 +3
So not law enforcement? So if anyone defended themselves for having a weapon brandished at them there would be no consequences, right?!?

eddie2911 Apr 2, 2026 +4
Republicans told me that just having a gun at a protest was reason enough for the cops to shoot and kill someone... so these guys should've been shot and killed by the police, right Republicans?

Jeromes_Pornostache Apr 2, 2026 +3
Bounty hunters are scum. I suppose you kind of have to be a dirtbag to do their work, but it seems to attract the type of person who fantasizes about having the same power as law enforcement but who don’t have the discipline and/or don’t want to go through the training required.

Fact: in 100% of all fake-gun-related shootings, the victim is always the one with the fake gun.

realparkingbrake Apr 2, 2026 +4
Good, bounty hunters get away with too much too often. Have to wonder how many of those supposed ICE agents were not actually feds.

LiberalSuperG Apr 2, 2026 +5
I had a maga clown threaten me with a gun at the protest last weekend. This is just what scared little bitches do

"Desert Eagle 5.0" Why do you keep saying that?

wanderingpeddlar Apr 2, 2026 +5
First I don't believe for a moment they were bounty hunters. If they were bounty hunters they would not be active at a protest. They would be chasing someone that skipped their court date. Bounty hunters are just regular people they have no powers of arrest or anything. If they are actually bounty hunters their bail bondsmen is going to be done with them. Either way they are going to find out that waiving fake guns around gets you the same time as real guns. That and I wonder if they are not able to buy handguns. Last time I heard Minneapolis was looking at people not being allowed to own guns having toy guns as a crime. Guess they will find out .

Il est extrêmement choquant que des personnes brandissent des armes à feu devant des manifestants pacifique anti ICE. J'espère que ces personnes iront en prison jusqu'à la fin de leur jours.

Wow, in my state, they would have shot them when those toy guns came out.

Looking at the picture in the article, I wonder why they weren't immediately shot while Tamir Rice was... Total mystery.

CatsAreMajorAssholes Apr 2, 2026 +1
Felony charges. Good. May they never be allowed to have real guns. Then again, they're probably already felons. That's why they had replicas and not real guns.

Its no surprise at least one of these guys (they both have the same last name and one is ~25 years older than the other so maybe the dad?) seems to also be a lying fraudster. https://www.oid.ok.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/12-1094-DIS-WGC-Conditional-Administrative-Order-and-Notice-of-Right-to-Be-Heard-12-27-12.pdf

The Trump admin is investigating the expanded use of “Bounty Hunter’s” as a NGO paramilitary organization. They are currently being implemented as arms of immigration enforcement. However if this proves to be feasible, then Poll Watchers, Voting Distractions in Blue districts, and other use’s are possible. An example would be conducting threatening actions that result in the closing of a Blue district polling place for “safety reasons”.
