Police don’t prevent crime, they respond to it. On the off chance a cop shows up before a crime has been committed, they’ll escalate the situation to ensure that they get to arrest someone for something.

Heck, and you are describing a real problem here of a real thing police do, arresting someone for resisting arrest, but even without the rot, if a cop is there and a crime hasn't been committed, they can't (or shouldn't) be arresting people because a cop thinks they could maybe break a law. And not talking like "assault and battery in progress". The system is just not set up in anyway to actually prevent crime. At best we have bad deterrents, but that's just "see how these other people got punished when they did that".

Agreed, there's a disturbing number of cops who are willing to arrest someone for resisting arrest without understanding that's a *secondary* crime (as in, you'd have to be in the process of being arrested for a crime to resist said arrest and be charged for it). Just like there's a whole lot of cops out there who understand they can cite *Penn v Mimms* to order someone out of their car without realizing that *Penn v Mimms* is essentially *Terry v Ohio* for vehicles. Or, for that matter, that the pat down search *Terry v Ohio* allows is external only and first requires clearly articulable suspicion that: a crime has been or will be imminently committed, the detained person is armed, *and* the public or officer's safety is at risk. It's disturbing and pathetic that even with the standard set that low and cops being given the highest benefit of the doubt that so many of them still get it wrong.

Reminder that police have no legal obligation to prevent or stop crime, per the Supreme Court. However, they must respond to a call. If you see something happening and they're doing nothing, call 911 and report it. Then they are duty bound to respond to it.

The value of bounty hunters in society go up in proportion to the incompetency of the law enforcers in maintaining control in the region . The more competent law enforcement is, the less bounty hunters are needed because the police can handle it themselves. If you live in a society where bounty hunters are thriving, that's a bad sign.

In practice, most work for bail bondsmen in states that have cash bail. The bail bondsmen want to get their money back, so they hire people to track down the guy who skipped court. This isn't the old west with a privatized policing.

Yeah when people picture bounty hunters they imagine the old west “dead or alive” wanted posters. Bounty hunters back then were basically crowd funded cops, who accepted tax payer funded cash rewards for tracking and arresting, or if necessary killing wanted criminals that the local sheriffs either couldn’t or wouldn’t hunt down themselves. That era is long dead though. Governments these days only pay for information their own police can use, not arrests or bodies, so the only people for bounty hunters to find are just people delinquent on bond payments since bail bondsmen are the only ones paying bounties. The days of gunslingers hunting down gang members is long gone. Nowadays modern bounty hunters are essentially glorified debt collectors.

I mean without the bounty hunters there would be no bondsman and people would just be filling up the jails with no way out. Then again people are sitting in jail at Ludacris bonds not linked to their income or assets.

Some states already don't have bondsmen or bounty hunters. Depending on the situation, I believe the courts can generally just offer a 10-20% deposit option. About the same percent that a bondsman would charge as a non-refundable fee, except you actually get it back for showing up to court

Bail bond inflated bail to unattainable prices. Instead of giving the accuse another option to secure released until trial it inflated bail so much that it became the only option. Bond should be illegal. Either the person has shown to be so dangerous that they should be held until their hearing or the bail should be low enough that you do not need a bondsman to secure your release. Bring back the speedy trial and this become much less of an issue. There are a lot of ways to streamline the system to remove many of the first time low level offender from clogging up court dockets. A full judge should not be require to handle a first time petty shoplifting case. And full lawyers should not be needed to defend or prosecute such a case either.

And cops easily swing court cases in their favor all the damn time. I see your arguing a more existential point. That a jury will find the bounty hunters innocent. Obviously, no concrete answer can be given and which party will be deemed innocent. But the odds of the bounty hunters winning are slim at best. Within the world of bounty hunting, this exact problem persists. There are court cases where a bounty hunter brandished a replica firearm, and were charged with a felony. Bounty hunters are not law enforcement officers. Which is why charges are now being filed against these bounty hunters specifically by the Hennepin County Attorneys Office. Let’s discuss what actually happened: Bounty hunter 1: Brandished and pointed a replica Glock at a crowd of civilians. Bounty hunter 2: Fired a rifle containing a less than lethal projectile, its appearance and sound was indistinguishable from a real firearm. The bounty hunters were not in any real danger. So when they brandished their replica firearms as well as threatened the crowd with violence. That is a felony. Hence why they are being charged. I would bet confidently they do not see an innocent verdict.

Yeah, nobody took the bait so the "bounty hunters" got slapped. But all it takes is one person to bite and the whole situation changes. Im not saying don't go to protests armed, do whatever you want within the confines of the law and what you are willing to risk. But the cops knew about it and didn't take steps to prevent it. They wanted it to escalate, they wanted a reason to crack heads. The protesters were just smart enough not to give it to them. I mean come on why where those idiots even there in the first place? Just to scare people on behalf of the cops.

Other than planted actors, there are genuinely people who enjoy attending events such as these to incite violence. They believe the officers have their back because they might be politically aligned with them. Nobody took their bait, like you said, and it exposed them out in the open. The video put a magnifying glass under them. Now we wait to hear a verdict. We can only hope they’re charged to the fullest extent.

If a gun is pointed at you, your immediate thought isn’t to examine if it’s fake. You’re pushed into fight or flight. In the time you could take to examine the gun you could be killed. All in the matter of a few seconds. If a police officer feels like a suspect will pull a gun on them they can open fire in fear of being harmed. But that logic also can apply to civilians. Nobody should point guns at anybody unless their life is threatened. Shootings are meticulously judged by coroners,autopsy examinations, ballistics etc. If it’s found that you killed somebody needlessly, you will be charged with manslaughter, and lose a majority of your life in a prison.

These are not police officers. They are bounty hunters. There is no incentive for police to protect them. Even if they were called as witnesses. A jury seeing a bounty hunter non-LEO point a replica gun, as well as firing a less than lethal from a rifle that sounded like an actual gunshot; their defense is crippled. Jury’s have ruled against the police before. May I refer you to the Afroman case that ended recently.

It's really weird when people use fake firearms in crimes because legally they aren't considered different than real firearms as long as people believe them to be real, which is the point of having the fake guns. Maybe you get a shave off the sentencing for a couple months but "See it's a fake gun, it's not armed robbery" doesn't work.

There have been cases where defendants have tried to avoid (unsuccessfully) the "armed career criminal" sentencing enhancements by committing robberies with replica firearms. IIRC, the *assault* portion of "assault with a deadly weapon" only requires the victim to believe the weapon is real. A perpetrator could use a painted hotdog and still receive the same penalty as if they had wielded a functional firearm.

These aren't toy guns like airsoft guns. These are less lethal guns AKA suped up paintball guns. They are less lethal, not non lethal. They can still kill or mane you. Plenty of people get killed or maimed by them when the cops use them. They are commonly known as "rubber bullet" guns. Except that rubber is just the coating on a metal ball. It'll still mess you up. You don't want to be on the receiving end of one of these guns.

They aren't airsoft guns. They are less lethal guns AKA rubber ball guns. Except the balls aren't made out of rubber, they are just rubber coated. They can still kill and maim you.

Not “fake” according to the article, just identical weapons that shoot less than lethal rounds it seems? Either way, a real easy way to get shot by actual lethal rounds by someone else legally holding, as bounty hunters hold no higher jurisdiction over other civilians.

Pretty much pull citizens arrests on people that skip bail. They're hired by the bail bondmen.

Say you get arrested and your bail is 20k. You can pay a bail bondsman 2k. He will front the whole 20k. Once you show up to court the bondsman gets his money back. Most of the time people will show up so it's easy money. However the times you decide to run the bondsman either is or hires bounty hunters to get you back. If they happen to capture you and get you to jail, they are given a bounty.

First I don't believe for a moment they were bounty hunters. If they were bounty hunters they would not be active at a protest. They would be chasing someone that skipped their court date. Bounty hunters are just regular people they have no powers of arrest or anything. If they are actually bounty hunters their bail bondsmen is going to be done with them. Either way they are going to find out that waiving fake guns around gets you the same time as real guns. That and I wonder if they are not able to buy handguns. Last time I heard Minneapolis was looking at people not being allowed to own guns having toy guns as a crime. Guess they will find out .

The Trump admin is investigating the expanded use of “Bounty Hunter’s” as a NGO paramilitary organization. They are currently being implemented as arms of immigration enforcement. However if this proves to be feasible, then Poll Watchers, Voting Distractions in Blue districts, and other use’s are possible. An example would be conducting threatening actions that result in the closing of a Blue district polling place for “safety reasons”.
