Charlie Kirk highway got vetoed in Arizona. Elected officials are citing politics
There will be no Charlie Kirk highway in his home state of Arizona. And elected officials are pointing to politics as the reason.

Naming a highway after someone whose sole claim to fame is politics is inherently political.

Literally all that needs to be said

ImpressiveMethod8624 Mar 31, 2026 +29
At least get it right his claim to fame was spreading hate and white power it's just this pretending to be president and the entire conservative branch also hold those truths to be real. Any questions ❓

He wasn’t a politician. He was an in person shitposter

Mistrblank Apr 1, 2026 +8
To be fair he was also an online shitposter too.

And not even being good at their role in said politics!

but he was never an elected politician. is this one of those "everything is politics" viewpoints?
-48
moonchili Mar 31, 2026 +29
He was the founder and spokesperson for an organization dedicated to conservative youth activism. How is that *not* political?

No-Cranberry6148 Mar 31, 2026 +76
Well, of course it's politics. Duh. What the right wing means when they say something is "political" is "politics we don't like". And with a presidential approval rating of 36% on such conservative-friendly sources as "the Economist", they'd better get used to it.

Sufficient-Yam6787 Mar 31, 2026 +46
Folks, this is their MLK. It is quite surprising cause this is the best man they get to offer already
46
AZPD Mar 31, 2026 +17
It's really baffling. Like, even if you completely agreed with him politically, what great things did he accomplish? Imagine if someone like Trae Crowder was killed and every liberal in the country was tripping over themselves to name things after him and proclaim him the second coming of Jesus.

AusToddles Mar 31, 2026 +13
He hated who they hated That's it... that's the whole reason they worship him

fxkatt Mar 31, 2026 +12
>*Lawmakers in more than 20 states have introduced over five dozen bills seeking to honor Kirk...* They should postpone this till after the Robinson trial. Kirk may gain in stature while his closest allies who are pushing this agenda, may sink into suspicion and dishonor.

I'm pretty sure he is their Horst Wessel

Like naming stuff after Cesar Chavez. Maybe public stuff shouldn’t be named after people.
-2
rolfraikou Apr 1, 2026 +1
F****** so much stuff is named after people. Half the towns I've lived in were named after people. A lot of the time you don't even realize it.
1
_AskMyMom_ Mar 31, 2026 +24
The republicans here wanted cesar chavez’s name ripped off everything immediately, but wanted to name things after this racist POS. They can’t see they’re two sides of the same coin, only brown pedo bad! What about the president?

Not even the consveratives at his own funeral mourned them. They all asked for money specifically for themselves, and his wife was caught on camera wetting her eyes so she could at least pretend to cry. He had no actual friends or family and his own liveshow to celebrate his achievements they had to cancel because they couldn't find any examples, to fill out the runtime. Conservatives don't even give a shit about Charlie Kirk other than to hold it over someone's head as a "So there!" moment. And I've heard consveratives give me the spiel of: "It's disingenious to say he was a bad guy, why can't you show outrage for his death- Let's reverse that. If it's just really mean, to talk about his actions, who he was, or that he personally endorsed political violence against opponents, and it's just really unfair to bring up what kind of person he was? Then he was ***not*** a good person "underneath it all."

Republican state Senate President Warren Petersen, who sponsored the legislation, said it was Hobbs who practiced politics by breaking with “a long-standing Arizona tradition” of recognizing people who made an impact on society. That's the standard he wants to claim? So I guess a highway named after Hitler would be a-okay. Actually wait, he's a republican elected official in 2026, he probably would have no problem with that.
12
Smaynard6000 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah, I don't see people lining up to name things after Charles Manson, either.
1
One_Disaster_5995 Mar 31, 2026 +10
Maybe they should try California. California State Route 190 (CA-190) runs straight through Death Valley and Furnace Creek. Newsom could be up for it.
10
rolfraikou Apr 1, 2026 +2
Maybe I95 between the I-595 interchange and Marina Mile Boulevard in Florida. The most deadly portion of highway in the US. It's weird, I swear I looked that up not too long ago and I thought it had said it was CA-74 (Ortega Highway) because it's a highway with a lot of fun turns, right next to a very wealthy area, so you get a lot of fancy fast cars getting massively wrecked there *constantly*.

I don't think anybody's going to want to drive on "Ventilated Neck Expressway"
9

No, Kirk was just some loud mouth, nothing, absolutely nothing should be named after him.

Sewage plant maybe? Or are we reserving those for Trump exclusively?

Immediately after Hitler took power in 1933, a wave of renamings swept through Germany. A decree from the Reich Ministry of the Interior required that the most important street or central square in every city bear Hitler’s name.

The amount of shits taken directly onto that road would merit a biohazard designation. Smart move Arizona.
6
Entire_Toe2640 Mar 31, 2026 +4
What a funny headline. Of course it’s politics, just like it was politics to name the road after him in the first place.
4
Wayward_Whines Apr 1, 2026 +3
The dude was a f****** podcaster. 99% of the over 60 crowd had never heard of him before he died. He’s also an idiot and a racist but it doesn’t erase the fact he’s just a f****** podcaster.

Why don't we have a Stalin, or Hitler way. Kirk is no different.

First of all, a lowlife scumbag like whatever his name was should never be honored in any way And second, after all the damage the right has done and will undoubtedly do before they're hopefully defanged soon I couldn't care less if going forward recognition depends on political affiliation because Republicans are the lowest of the low and I'm done even pretending to respect them

I think all this Charlie Kirk stuff only makes sense if you understand it as their response to George Floyd. Conservatives are still mad about the BLM protests. They got irate that things were named after Floyd, who they considered to be a drug addicted criminal who got what he deserved by resisting police. IMO so much of the MAGA movement is about anger over who society honors. To them the fact that society has named things after a black man with a criminal record, but they won't name things after a successful white conservative is a symbol of everything they think is wrong with society.

IntelligentStyle402 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Great news. Thanks Arizona, Kirk was a tainted podcaster, not an American hero.
1
alabasterskim Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah dumbass, you're a politician doing a political act. It's political the moment you open your mouth for this or any other stupid bill. Kirk was no Malcolm X or MLK (and on my God have I heard the comparisons); he was a white neo-Nazi in a blue suit instead of a white one.

Glad to see this was stopped. It’s better to keep public infrastructure focused on the community rather than picking sides in a big debate. It just feels like a smarter way to keep things moving forward without extra drama. What do you think would be a more unifying name for that stretch of road?
