It’s always the people who will never have to serve who are the quickest to talk about bringing back the draft.

As a vet I've always thought this. Out of shape hillbillies or old men past military age seem to be the most pro war.

Pockydo Apr 1, 2026 +5
I didn't serve so maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't a draft be like the worst outcome for everyone involved? I can't imagine current service members want to serve with people who literally didn't choose to at least enlist willingly
5
Threat_Level_9 Apr 1, 2026 +1
We haven't even begun to really send current service members so a draft is a far fetched idea at this point. In 20+ years of "war" in Iraq and Afghanistan we didn't have a draft. This draft talk is a bit nonsensical. As the other comment says, its a lot of hillbilly dipshits that wouldn't pass the physical and old men that are the most vocal about war. But yeah, it would be a horrible outcome if it came to that.

Pockydo Apr 1, 2026 +1
Oh 100% it's absolutely one of those "we probably won't but if it happens I wouldn't be surprised" deals More because this administration is full of shit and pure chaos than anything
1
Bruce-7892 Apr 1, 2026 +1
You are absolutely right about that. You get straight up criminals and people trying to get out of doing work in the military during a draft. Imagine your current job but half your coworkers have to be physically threatened and verbally abused to get them to do what they are supposed to be doing.

They raised the age limits so how do his other children escape the draft?

The military won't have much trouble recruiting once the economic and geopolitical consequences of this attack on Iran (on top of bad domestic and international policy from the white house that was already there before) rears its ugly head and millions, if not tens of millions, are out of work in a very short order compared to today. People will sign up out of shear financial necessity, and if there were any recruitment issues before, then they would go away pretty fast.

smurfsundermybed Apr 1, 2026 +9
They raised the volunteer age limit by 20% and removed covid and marijuana conviction limitations. Once they run out of volunteers, they'll move to voluntolds.

Smaynard6000 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I can't imagine that too many people are running to enlist while Trump is in charge
1
caitnicrun Apr 1, 2026 +14
Meh, not going to say that can't happen, but Yanks aren't there yet.  That's at least a year away. And if the GOP is removed from power, it's game over. I personally know veterans across the pond who will simply refuse to be called back. What are they going to do? Send ice after them?

Vlad_Yemerashev Apr 1, 2026 +6
Considering how a lot (not everyone, but enough) over here don't have much savings, and the knock on economic effects thus far are going to be felt soon, I'm not sure we'd have to wait a full year at this point. There are steps before enacting a draft like calling up the reserves, stop-loss, etc., that could tide things over in the meantime as far as manpower is concerned, if there's an invasion. With the orange demented idiot we have here, there's no telling what will happen, whether there is an invasion or not or if Trump actually follows through. All I can say for sure is this war is going to have severe economic consequences for everyone, one way or another, and I am not sure anyone knows where exactly all the marbles will end up falling other than none of this is good.
6
thismadhatter Apr 1, 2026 +4
they wont call up reserves with civil unrest rising rapidly.
4

That won't be an effective military.

Why not when they see the young poor men keep lining up?

I thought it was a given with recent events and statements. For example Trump saying the war would last two weeks (a month ago). Sending out fundraising emails with images of our fallen soldiers’ caskets. Propaganda flybys for Kid Rock. Raising the draft age. Telling a reporter she’s disgusting for asking if there will be boots on the ground. Ramping up military presence in the Middle East. Vance saying the war won’t go on for *years*. Megyn Kelly asking who is responsible for convincing innocent Trump to start the war in the first place. Trump saying well just take the oil. Calling it the “strait of Trump”. Is there some reason shithead Trump *wouldnt* institute a draft? Add it all up and it’s not looking good.
21
HarriettDubman Apr 1, 2026 +1
The draft age wasn’t raised, it was the voluntary enlistment age for the US Army.

Sad to say it's easier for them to send prisoners off to war
4
chihuahua826 Apr 1, 2026 +13
I don't think it would end well if they handed weapons and explosives to a bunch of inmates who went to prison because they were that adamant about not supporting the government's actions, they could easily end up with a rebellion

3
Vlad_Yemerashev Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not quite. In Russia, they are offering inmates to serve in lieu of serving the remainder of their sentence rather than just plucking them from their cell outright unannanounced at 3am.

Just like the draft in Vietnam, we will gladly take Americans who don’t want to be forced to die in a pointless war for a pedophile.

My uncle could have played basketball in the US at any number of schools, but decided to go to the University of Windsor to play. Going to suggest a similar path with my 16 year old...

Recruitment (and retention / re-enlistment) is inevitably going to crash. Sure, there were and will be financial incentives to enlistment, but most people need to feel good about themselves, to maintain a positive self-image. Before, you could believe you're defending something, or doing good. With the naked greed and aggression, the promises of oil conquest and violating civilians, of abandoning the rules of war, it'll be very difficult for recruits to convince themselves they're not the bad guys.
12
thismadhatter Apr 1, 2026 +13
No one in their right mind should trust any financial incentive coming from this government.

Pretty tough for them to fight two wars at once, Especially when one of those wars requires fighting their own citizens.
17
Sharticus123 Apr 1, 2026 +8
I honestly hope they do it. No faster way to put a stop to military adventurism than a draft. Very few people care when volunteers are sent to die on the other side of the planet, but folks magically start caring when their precious child is plucked from their life and forced to die for billionaires.

A draft would end the Trump era even faster.

aeropl3b Apr 1, 2026 +5
Yeah...people didn't like the Vietnam war and the backlash from that was bad. This current series of wars is hated even more. It is not going to end well. I am luckily over 25 so hopefully I don't get roped into a draft. But for the people that do...I am hoping for weaponized incompetence.

sedatedlife Apr 1, 2026 +11
Not that worried about it mostly because i do not think Americans would accept it. The majority is already against the war starting a draft would likely push it to 70% disapproval. A country can not sustain a military action with that kind of disapproval.
11
Manmetbaard Apr 1, 2026 +9
Good. Than maybe finally people will actually do something against this.
9
Randomwhitelady2 Apr 1, 2026 +3
We are already at 60% disapproval and growing. A draft would push disapproval higher than 70%
3
Rather_Unfortunate Apr 1, 2026 +2
That disapproval would swiftly turn violent once the first HD videos circulated of American conscripts dying slowly or committing suicide after a drone attack like in Ukraine.
2
Cute-Ad2879 Apr 1, 2026 +3
People were not happy about the draft during Vietnam either, but it still happened, and it happened for a while until the government about-faced. I would think the one lesson the US military learned from the surge in Iraq is that during economic downturns you don't need a draft, you just offer 50k sign up bonuses.  I suspect they will manage to sustain another decade long conflict without the draft, and then Americans can do what they do best by  pretending it isn't happnening.
3
sedatedlife Apr 1, 2026 +13
The difference is Vietnam had majority public support initially it wasn't till like 1970 that support fell under 50%. Also with the internet it will be more difficult for the state to control the media narrative.

It's one of the least likely scenarios to come around. Not impossible, the regime is plenty stupid enough to try it, but there's a lot more stuff to realistically worry about.

I think its time we all come down with a life long case of "Trump spurs". What do you say?
2
Fancy_Ad7218 Apr 1, 2026 +2
He said he was going to prevent world war 3 and prevent a draft. He got American moms to abandon their own bodily autonomy in order to protect their sons because of these lies. He started world war 3. Check! Next up? The draft. The half of Americans that were lied to are finally waking up and escaping his cult. Moms and sons are waking up really fast! He’s pissed off the wrong group this time.

Its in the playbook they published…get ready to go to war to make rich old white men richer...

I mean the guy has done every brazen thing in the book it wouldn't surprise me if he tried to institute the draft through an EO.
3
One_Disaster_5995 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Just three more weeks now people! Trump said so!
1
FosterFl1910 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Congress would have to approve a draft. I don’t see that happening. And if Congress doesn’t approve, it’s not legal, which mean no court would prosecute people not showing up if he somehow tried to do it without congressional approval. What’s more likely to happen is he’s just going to leave the place a mess.
1
Spidersinthegarden Apr 1, 2026 +1
Wouldn’t they just treat us like illegals and get ICE to put us in camps? “They can’t” “they won’t” doesn’t seem to mesh much these days.
1
FosterFl1910 Apr 1, 2026 +1
No, I don’t really see the administration rounding up millions of draft age men and putting them in jail. They don’t have the jail space. Republican members of congress would have to abandon Trump because their voters would revolt if their sons were being drafted and hauled into jail. And ICE isn’t big enough for this kind of operation anyway. It’s just not a realistic scenario no matter how crazy Trump is.
1
teebird_phreak Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why do we have articles like this and also ones that say he said 2-3 weeks we are out? God I hate this timeline

MissionCreeper Apr 1, 2026 +1
Legit question, are we more worried about a draft for this war vs the other middle eastern wars for some particular reason?
1
Throwawayaccountdell Apr 1, 2026 +1
The reason people are worried is because Iran is a country of almost 100 million people there. Their topography is made up of big mountains which make it very difficult to land there. They are also more trained then what the U.S has been up against. If there is a draft it should be the MAGA women and men who voted for this administration.
1

Send Eric Trump: He’s still of recruitment age and enjoys hunting, so he’s a perfect choice.

How does a draft happen if we aren’t at war?
1
Real-Repair-1825 Apr 1, 2026 +2
It wild how many people buy this shit lmao. The US isn’t going to have a draft jfc
2
Droo99 Apr 1, 2026 +4
Yeah, the hysterical left just moves from one ridiculous panic to the next. Remember when they kept telling us that electing Trump was going to make us lose Roe v Wade lol
4
vaerenthin Apr 1, 2026 +3
I know its ridiculous. A draft will not happen because even if you circumvented the legal method of instituting it through congress, it would be insanely unpopular.Vietnam atleast started with positive approval, this war already is well negative with only dozen or so deaths. With vietnam and the ME forever war in recent memories it just can't happen.  Increased benefits, higher recruiting and reenlistment, certainly to try and gather more bodies, but a draft is just fear mongering.
3
Catspaw129 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not to worry (about a draft). According to the internet there's about 100,000 US military personnel in NATO countries. When the USA withdraws from NATO those poeple will have to go somewhere.
1
TemporarySun314 Apr 1, 2026 +9
Good luck operating in the middle east, when you don't have any military bases in Europe anymore...
9
thismadhatter Apr 1, 2026 +1
Read the tea leaves. Draft = How do we systematically lower the population even more? Meat grinder. Think your peaceful protests are going to have to get a bit more rowdy soon.
1
Gareth009 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Pro draft. It is much tougher to get buy-in for a war when everyone is vulnerable. A mercenary army, as we now have, relies on war, or the constant fear of war, for their livelihood.
