As a long-time Civ player (and one of the few people that enjoys Civ 7), I've been surprised to see that the process of "build up units at the border and constantly tell the other leader that you're just merely passing by" starting a war play out with Trump's war on Iran.
I've been bracing for the possible "everyone denounces you for using a WMD" Civ outcome for a couple of weeks now.

The world was already taking steps to end this before the current conflict started. The boycotts of US goods and services, the new trade agreements, the change in the US treasury bond market, and the general shift in global markets have all been groundwork to deal with an increasingly belligerent US.
It’s not hard to see this morphing into outright sanctions on the US.

You say it’s diverse but most of its energy is from fossil fuels if you actually look into it? Most is Coal but oil/natural gas is the second largest source of energy. Not sure where you are getting the 6 months of oil saved, China is pretty opaque about this kind of thing, although I don’t buy that their oil reserve is many times larger than the U.S reserve.
Even though the CCP can do things like price caps to keep prices down, the money is still coming from somewhere, and and losing a significant portion of their imports is undoubtedly a bad thing for them.

Less dollar dominance yes, but China does not want the Yuan to be the reserve currency.
20
Positive_Total_86513 days ago

Longterm, it really wouldnt make sense to replace the petrodollar with the Yuan. Its pretty clear that China is looking toward a post-petrodollar world, not by being the new oil reserve currency, but by getting the rest of the world using their renewable technology. Fossil fuel is not a viable long-term energy source, we've known that for a very long time.
We could have been innovating this whole time but we dug our heels in on fossil fuel despite all evidence pointing to a *need* to move away from it.
18

China is hurting… all of Asia is hurting.
Russia is technically happy that the price of oil is going up, but their refineries are also going up… in flames that is. So Russia is hurting too.
This is a geopolitically sensitive issue because Russia is unable to help Iran and China is unwilling to help.. if anything, I’m thinking China might want this to end as soon as possible.. Russia wants this to continue as long as possible.
A weird situation.

12
mutexsprinkles3 days ago

Just Iraq (not the gulf wars, just the last one) was trillions. Even at 2003 prices, a trillion is enough solar panels to account for 20% of the US electricity consumption so they didn't even really come out ahead on energy.
Solar is (literally, $0.12 Vs $12 per watt) 100x cheaper than that now, they're probably *already* past the point where buying solar panels with the cost of war would have been more cost effective.
3

You don't think the US is hurting from this? Gas is going up, diesel is going up, jet fuel is going up. Everything is about to get really expensive. In order to keep prices down and transport open, petroleum manufacturing is going to switch to diesel and jet fuel since you cannot have those stop. Gas rationing is coming. But I guess in the wise words of your POTUS, Praise be to Allah!
18
supereuphonium3 days ago
+3
The US is likely one of the countries hurting the least, ironically. The US is a net oil exporter, and imports mostly come from Canada/mexico. It’s just because the US started this war, there is far more internal political pressure to reduce prices. I struggle to think of any country that is better off than the US if politics are ignored except for Russia, where the price spike is a boon for funding their war.
