They seem to be doing well in Thailand. I see them everywhere.

JustChillFFS 6 hr ago +1
Apparently Australia too

KGB_cutony 6 hr ago +1
It's very funny. The Chinese government had a big push to get EV brands global. So BYD just shipped a bunch of EVs to Australia to collect the subsidies before they expire. Just as the subsidies ended and they were worried about how to deal with the massive stockpiles in Australia, the strait closed. EV sales went through the roof. Before Feb if you haggle with the salesperson they can gift you a home battery along with EV purchase. Now the wait time is up to 3 months and all you can get from the salesperson is probably bottled water

PrivatePilot9 6 hr ago +1
And just in time for all the USA big automakers to have cancelled or castrated many of their EV lineups. Is the US tired of all the winning yet?
1
gravtix 6 hr ago +1
USA will probably start arresting EV drivers as “anti-American”. If Elon donates enough money he gets an exception.
1
HumanTraffic2 6 hr ago +1
That's pretty amazing, do you have a source on that home battery haggling? I got a BYD and only d******* was their nationwide deal, am in several groups and everyone says don't even bother. Most I've heard is people getting a cable or something but think that was for delayed delivery.
1
ratomelo 6 hr ago +1
Same happened in Brazil. They brought ~5k cars 2 months before subside expiration and now there's months long wait time for some models. But they also bought one of the facilities that Ford abandoned to assemble cars here.

Everything the US is doing is making China stronger

I know you're an aussie - are you still referring to cars?
1

Yes, Shark 6, BYDs PHEV Ranger like pickup.

Additional-Sky-8384 6 hr ago +1
they’re nice cars. the software side is better than tesla. build quality is better.
1
ED_Churly 6 hr ago +1
I have a BYD in Australia and love it. But I disagree the software is better than Tesla. It’s one remaining advantage they have.
1
SenorTron 6 hr ago +1
Yeah. Am Australian and BYD will probably be our next car. Would prefer that there were some Australian manufacturers but since there aren't the Chinese vehicles are impossible to beat for value.
1
Cosmosn8 6 hr ago +1
Indonesia too.
1
xpda 7 hr ago +1
That's obvious. They're now the world's number one EV maker, and I can't buy one in the U.S.

jmhawk 6 hr ago +1
Musk would spend biblical amounts of wealth to lobby the government to prevent a Chinese EV from taking US market share away from his claws, but fortunately for him the current administration bans Chinese EVs for free
1
thorscope 6 hr ago +1
The Chinese EV ban was done by the previous administration, not the current one. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/biden-administration-finalizes-us-crackdown-chinese-vehicles-2025-01-14/
1
GuyWithPants 6 hr ago +1
And, tangentially, Canada went along with the effective ban as long as it seemed like we were in the auto industry together with the USA. With that gone, Canada’s letting Chinese cars in.
1
fhs 6 hr ago +1
Canada's not fully opening the door to Chinese EVs, only about 50000k and with some marginal tariff applied.
1
quothe_the_maven 6 hr ago +1
Trump put the tariff at 25% in his first term, which already effectively banned them. What Biden did was like when they give someone already serving a life sentence another 200 years.
1
RookieMistake101 6 hr ago +1
Dems have been right with American auto for a very long time.
1
DangerDarrin 6 hr ago +1
This is why the US administration is so pissed at Canada for now allowing Chinese EVs into North America. They are getting closer. Let’s face it, the US auto industry is gonna get left behind if they don’t conform and embrace this change. Their industry is already in the shitter but the big auto companies and big oil keep lobbying to keep EVs out of the US. They are just shooting themselves in the foot and once a collapse happens they will be asking why?
1
Leek5 6 hr ago +1
Not just musk. All US auto makers. They know if they come here it would destroy them. The ford ceo say he loves his Chinese ev and doesn’t want to give it up
1
jstuu 6 hr ago +1
I hope if the dems win the white house they open the market to them
1
TOWEL7484 6 hr ago +1
It's so anti capitalist of these capatalists to do. Why innovate against a potential competitor when you can just be complacent with what you have. China is going to be, and already is, years ahead of any other country in this sector. I feel like the only way to catch up is to allow Chinese EVs in the US and force competition to happen.
1
fattybunter 6 hr ago +1
Chinese car ban has nothing to do with Elon. It’s not just EVs, and there’s US strategic reasons obviously

HumanTraffic2 6 hr ago +1
In Shanghai now and there are many BYDs and they're very nice, also a bunch of other EVs that I have and haven't heard of. I'm Australia we have around 6 models, 10 or more by the end of the year. - Atto 3 - Dolphin - Deal - Sealion 6 - Sealion 7 - Shark 6 Coming: - Atto 1 - Atto 2 - Seal 6 - Sealion 5 - Sealion 8 Then there's other brands: - GWM - Jaecoo - Chery - lDV - MG - Leapmotor - Xpeng - Geely - Zeekr All picking up volume respective to their investment level.
1
Inside-Line 6 hr ago +1
In many developing countries, its not even the EVs that are taking center stage. Their PHEV vehicles are solid are the only real PHEV option that has solid battery-only range. Not to mention a good deal cheaper than the competition. They are eating Toyota market share for breakfast.
1
iliveincanadaeh 6 hr ago +1
You mean the largest car company in China, soon to come to Canada, does not need US market? They never did.
1
hakenwithbacon 6 hr ago +1
Well, the US is still one of the largest markets in the world in terms of purchasing power. Canada's population is about 1/8th of the US
1
anengineerandacat 6 hr ago +1
I mean they are in just about every market, so don't think they are wrong there. BYD is very popular in Brazil for EVs, supposedly like 7% of all vehicles by brand and 74% of electrified vehicles. Same goes for Thailand and other emerging market countries. US will likely cave at some point, BYD just needs to sweeten the pot and place some HQ somewhere and investors will be all over it after they have rebalanced their portfolios.
1
darthreuental 6 hr ago +1
TBH, it's kinda funny given that the current US administration is by far the most corrupt in history. All it would take is for the Chinese government to cut a check to the Donald J Trump Library and the EV ban would go away. And Musk would have to take it like the loser he is.
1
luisa65-L 6 hr ago +1
US automakers are absolutely thrilled they can keep selling $80k pickup trucks without having to actually compete.
1
LumiereGatsby 7 hr ago +1
Coming to Canada and I can’t wait! Really want to see them everywhere
1
Vinen 6 hr ago +1
TBH theyre one of the more medicore brands in China. I saw some wild shit living in Shanghai for a month. Xpeng makes some stuff that would wreck the Minivan ICE market. Makes Sienna Hybrid looks casual. My family lived off Didi (Chinas far superior version of Uber/Lyft) Premium XL and we saw a good set of the market.
1
I_AM_STILL_A_IDIOT 6 hr ago +1
My buddy in Shanghai bought himself a top of the line Avatr 06 sedan for like $30,000, thing was absolutely mint. Self-drives, interior finish was good, screens everywhere, good music setup. For the price of a c**** hatchback in Europe 😅

nujabes02 6 hr ago +1
No v8

The9isback 6 hr ago +1
Xpeng, Zeekr, Denza (BYD's luxury arm) wrecks a lot of modern car brands. the Zeekr 009 and Denza D9 have already replaced the Alphard as the premium MPV.
1
SY0123 6 hr ago +1
Who cares? It’s a car. It takes you from A to B is a great value for what you pay for. Not everything has to be a luxury brand.

Speak for yourself, i cant wait to finance my next fancy ass suv for $1451/month for the next 9 years 🫦

I won’t buy another vehicle made in the USA
1
AcousticOnomatopoeia 6 hr ago +1
As an American, I haven't bought an American car in 20 years, one Ford was enough, German ain't much better. Honda and Toyota for life!!
1
VaultBall7 6 hr ago +1
Weird thing to flex that you’re against supporting your neighbors?
1
AcousticOnomatopoeia 6 hr ago +1
I'm against owning shitty and poorly-designed vehicles. Do better, America
1

Honda and Toyota both manufacture cars in America

I don’t think they are bud. Sorry.
1

They are part of the 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles. The first BYD dealership permits have already been approved

Google "BYD Canada" and see.
1
PrivatePilot9 6 hr ago +1
Some are here already in testing and the dealerships are being built. This isn’t a question anymore, they’re coming.
1
niceufo777 7 hr ago +1
They are very good vehicles, and very c****, I drove one and they are great, in emerging countries there are tons of them.
1
hcornea 6 hr ago +1
They are extremely popular, wherever they are not banned. And for good reason.
1
ilic_mls 6 hr ago +1
Of course they can. They make solid vehicles for lower overall price than European or US competitors. They will dominate lower income markets and are already taking a cut of the established makers in other “richer” markets. Sure it would be good if they could sell in the US but they dont have to.
1
AccountHuman7391 6 hr ago +1
As an American, I would very much like to own one of these; please come to our market, k thx!

Something the US and EU haven't realized is that there's a gigantic market in developing countries, in the Global South, in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Oceania. The issue is that BYD and other Chinese manufacturers are willing to sell at lower prices and pursue these markets that are ignored and inaccessible due to economic reasons.
1
KGB_cutony 6 hr ago +1
Mostly agree, but I still think the idea that Chinese cars are just the cheaper option is not representative of the reality. Just BYD alone has the entry level Atto line (USD 10k range), the mid range Sealion and Dolphin (competes with Tesla model Y and 3 respectively) and the higher end Yangwang which is set around the Mercedes G wagon price point. Developing countries don't play the tariff games as much, so their prices can be knocked down. Making entry level Chinese offerings very palatable.
1
kloakndaggers 6 hr ago +1
very good cars. they are pretty much every single Uber black in Mexico City
1
Silicon_Knight 6 hr ago +1
The US is 6% of the market. Sure do they consume a lot? Yes but so do many other countries. Regarding households I'm talking about (not people) or about 2.19 billion households exist outside the US vs 137m in the US.
1
blitzzo 6 hr ago +1
6% of the global population, but 30% of the consumer market. Don't get me wrong BYD will be fine there are tons of car companies and specific models that aren't sold in the US, EU, or China which dominate the car market rankings and they manage to exist just fine but access to major markets certainly helps.
1
The_BigDill 6 hr ago +1
They have access to almost every market except America, they'll be fine Especially as more and more people in America struggle to afford a car
1
wjames0394 6 hr ago +1
They sure look nicer than the Tesla
1
GuaSukaStarfruit 6 hr ago +1
BYD stocks aren’t 💀 I invested in them f me
1
SpiritCrawler 6 hr ago +1
It’s a shame they can’t sell in the U.S. market.
1
AdonisK 7 hr ago +1
Can it thrive without governmental subsidies though?
1
zhaoz 6 hr ago +1
Yea, the ccp needs to save that money for billionaire tax cuts for example and not strategically invest money in future growth areas!!
1
Effective_Scheme2158 6 hr ago +1
“Strategically invest” They’re effectively creating a bubble inflating BYD value beyond what it actually worths
1
rhnltnsy16 7 hr ago +1
That can be said for most car companies if not all.
1
ruskyandrei 7 hr ago +1
Probably not at the extremely c**** prices currently, though why would China stop subsidies when they are very successfully putting a lot of pressure on western car makers.
1
Plenty_Complaint_192 6 hr ago +1
Are they “extremely c****” or do they look good because we have been dealt years of shit from car companies? Maybe the price benchmark set by Ford, Nissan, Toyota etc is just too high? iPhones cost $500 and sell for $1500 Who decided 3x the cost was the amount we should have to pay? If someone can make the same or better and be happy making profit at 2x the cost … that’s great.
1
ReserveFormal3910 6 hr ago +1
BYD does get subsidies, but the main reason they can sell it so c**** is their vertical integration they control almost all aspects of production from the lithium mines and every little parts in the car they have almost no suppliers.
1
old_ironlungz 6 hr ago +1
Name a car company that takes zero subsidies. Go on, name them.
1
Dr_SlapsMD 6 hr ago +1
Yea but those are good, murican, white Jesus owned car companies so it's not the same. China don't have Jesus so their cars are sin. /s
1
ilic_mls 6 hr ago +1
So subsidies are a bad thing? How about a bailout? Is 80 billion given to US automakers just to help them survive ok? Or is it ok because they are not Chinese?
1
garanvor 6 hr ago +1
Can American car manufacturers survive without subsidies? Gotta love the double standards just because they’re Chinese.
1
Toutatous 6 hr ago +1
If you think that Ford or GM never got help from the government,.I have news for you...
1
Creativator 6 hr ago +1
This makes it sound like the Chinese people as a whole are sacrificing part of their wellbeing to artificially prop up BYD. Have you seen what China is able to do lately?
1
Joltie 7 hr ago +1
They already have enough scale to be able to survive, but they would not be able to be as competitive as right now.
1
lordaddament 6 hr ago +1
You’d be amazed how much lower prices can be when everyone isn’t skimming a ton off for themselves at every level of production
1
fedroxx 6 hr ago +1
Well, none of the US automakers can or have so not sure I understand the question.
1
Dr_SlapsMD 6 hr ago +1
Their system is working for them... Why would they handicap themselves for the equivalent of a "are ya chicken?" challenge? 🤣
1
RecentSpecial181 7 hr ago +1
They are everywhere in Uzbekistan
1

You mean there’s more to the world than America?!?! Go figure! I guess I learn something every day!
1
Basset_found 6 hr ago +1
Sure would be nice if they were in the US. Not sure there are any c**** vehicles anymore. Just monster trucks and SUVs.
1
mrmcbreakfast 6 hr ago +1
BYD stock will make me rich someday I hope
1
Kilmonjaro 6 hr ago +1
If you go to any country outside the US you’ll see them everywhere
1
swiftpwns 6 hr ago +1
Seems great until it spontaneously combusts in your garbage and burns your house down. Dont buy BYD, their batteries are not safe.
1
trisul-108 6 hr ago +1
As long as they have unlimited support from the Chinese Communist Party, they cannot fail. For example, they are allowed not to pay their suppliers for 18 months ... who would not thrive in such an environment?
1
ccs77 6 hr ago +1
Bruh, that's blatant lying. A quick search on Google you can find that the average payment term for chinese auto is 54months as of Feb. This is after a few car companies pledged to support their suppliers last year. https://chinaevhome.com/2025/06/11/bydgeelyxpengliautoamongautomakerstopledge60daysupplierpaymentterms/
