North Korea used to get 100k-300k+ tourists a year pre-COVID (95% from China).

Probably Chinese tourists and North Korean students living in Japan.

North Korean students can study abroad? How!? Isn't the entire population basically taken hostage?
Genuine question btw. I mean, I read Blaine Harden's *Escape from Camp 14* and B.R. Myers' *The cleanest race* not that long ago, which don't paint a great picture of life in Best Korea.

There are a lot of North Koreans living in Japan. I met one years ago. She went to a North Korean school here and they took her on school trips to Pyongyang. They used to go on a regular ferry but the Japanese government banned it after the North Korean missile tests. And all the drugs, guns, spies, fake money and real money on it.
The number of schools is dwindling but I think there are still about 100 of them left. They used to get funding from the North Korea government but I think that's dried up now so they rely on funding from the Japanese government, donations, and school fees.

There are no UN peacekeeping forces blockading North Korea. You might be thinking about whatever world police forces from your country.
