While people are dismissive of it in this thread, he was very openly anti-lgbtq+. For lgbtq+ kids that grew up with the memes and thought of him fondly, him doing things like advocate against gay marriage in 2008, call the boyscouts "too gay", tout "family values" as a reason why while having an illegitimate child he ignored from an extramarital affair, and generally just spread hateful rhetoric, hurt moreso than normal. He was also a Christian nationalist who advocated for creationism in schools, was part of a group advocating for adopting Bible teachings into public schools, and was very intolerant towards non Christians. But if you were a white Christian straight man, or he thought you were, he was great to you in person. Just not great to everyone else.
