I’d like to congratulate the CIA Director for staying so quiet this last year, no-one knew who he was! Or at least I didn’t.

Well we know now. And that probably means a trump admin is blowing smoke rather than be an credible source of authority in their field of specialty. Which judging by the director smack talking than being a professional speaks volumes of his credibility and capability.

Ratcliffe is actually a halfway decent choice, he was on the intel committees in Congress, understands the job etc. this was kinda out of character for him to please the boss probably. We could have done much much worse for CIA director. Edit: after reading the quote it really isn’t even that, he’s citing possible intel, if I had to guess comms intercepts of how the Iranians felt, very normal

I still think the real plan is just to deceive *us* into believing the Nepo-Baby-in-Chief isn't as inept as he definitely looks.
2

Yeah it’s pretty obvious how much they play up “at the presidents direction and command” all he did was say “yes” when presented with an option

Still he’s no markwayne. Who will be known from now on as the only cabinet member who doesn’t have a college degree. And for any of the rest, if they frowned upon a Bachelor of Arts degrees, most have them.

Ratcliffe is actually one of the few competent people part of Trumps administration lol. He's also the one who lobbied hard to trump to resume intelligence sharing and continuing it for Ukraine against Russia.

The CIA was either forced to release this information for political purposes (so much winning!) or he is an idiot. His boast makes this strategy of deception worthless for future rescue missions.

Flatus_Diabolic 4 days ago +23
Eh. opsec was preserved because the briefing was too focused on blowing sunshine up trump’s ass than it was in talking about the operation. The pilot and the rescue mission barely got a mention, but there was plenty of waffling about how great he thinks Trump is and how bigly amazing US tech is and how humiliated Iran was by it. The language he used made me wonder if he was reading off a script written in gold sharpie. This reminds me about how trump’s medical report said his health was “astonishingly excellent” - language no doctor would ever use. They’re all just sock puppets for trump’s ego.

I'm reading that the 'agricultural airstrip' where the C-130's were destroyed is only 21 miles from the publicly alleged uranium storage site. I'd be quite surprised if we're getting the full story ourselves.

Waterwoogem 4 days ago +24
Trump would 100% be boasting with mass "Truths" about such an act if it happened.
24
jeffersonianMI 4 days ago +7
He did boast about it being a heroic rescue. Which it may have been. We really don't know.
7
Kind_Resort_9535 4 days ago +10
There’s already information out about the rescue mission. This war sucks, and we shouldn’t be there in the first place, but what US special forces did to get the airmen back is nothing short of incredible.
10
Sooperooser 4 days ago +7
I really don't get why they would need to make up a story that even makes them look bad to do this. It makes no sense.
7
jeffersonianMI 4 days ago +2
Its not 100% that they made anything up.  It just seeMs sus. Also, a succesful doesn't look bad IMO.  A failed SOF operation looks worse.
2
flirtmcdudes 4 days ago +17
Conspiracies/rumors are just that. Saying the reason they shot them down in the first place was a failed military operation near the nuclear site, which is why all those other planes and helis were shot down. It’s all just being pinned on the rescue
17
Common-Concentrate-2 4 days ago +9
Oh please, Trump isn't going to do ANYTHING unless he's getting credit for it by the end of the day. He's the kind of dad who tells you on your birthday "Jimmy, I was going to buy you one of the best birthday gifts ever....I shouldn't even be telling you this...but...it was going to cost $9,000. Yep. youre lucky you have such a great dad. But anyyway, I'm not spending that kinda money on a nerd like you"
9

Oh please, he did boast about it being a heroic rescue. Which it may have been. We really don't know. But the planes were definitely destroyed, and the geolocation appears to be pretty sus.

Unless they just didn't tell him. If we're willing to believe this rumor, its really not so far fetched to believe they didnt tell him.

Why lie about uranium everyone knows we're there to take. It's no secret they're getting bombed left and right because of uranium There doesn't need to be a secret ploy to take it. And how often do you think you get "the full story" on clandestine missions ? Does listnook have some kind if top security clearance
1
jeffersonianMI 2 days ago +1
The uranium location is sourced from the regular news.  I agree it could all be rubbish.  The incinerated transport planes were not rubbish and combined with their large transport capacity, it seems like an interesting story. The story would remain secret if it was an  unsuccessful embarrassment. I agree we can't see events clearly, but the publicly verified parts of the story are interesting.

What ever the cost is worth it really. Having any armed services member fall into captivity would not be great for the United States. It would be a propaganda boon for the Iranians. Having the US essentially move heaven and earth to get their soldiers home gives peace of mind and be willing to take more risks. Reading up on the mission is kind of crazy. The Americans essentially set up a small airbase inside Iran. Then sent in hundreds personel to get this person out. The crazier thing is that there are reports that some locals rendered aid to him. That is telling that there are some in Iran that are still dissatisfied with the government and are willing to aid a downed airmen.

US pilots are given cards to hand to locals in the case that they are shot down or have to evacuate. The cards offer very large rewards for helping them reach safety.
11
elh0mbre 4 days ago +3
Not sure if this is true for pilots, but I've heard special forces wear Rolexes because they can very easily be used in place of currency if they end up in similar situations.
3

Some might I am not sure. Giving some one a Rolex for a no questions asked favor might be a bit too much. I have heard it is more common for them to have a few hundred dollars in different bill amounts, ie 10, 50s, 20s, 5s and 1s. This is for different favors by any locals they encounter.

The US is combating $20,000-30,000 drones with Patriot missiles that cost $4,000,000 each. At the end of March it was reported that 850 Tomahawk missiles have been fired at Iran since this debacle started at about $1,300,000 each. That also accounts for about 1/4 of the total supply that the US military has of them.

Can anyone imagine the positive change we could make in society by sending every citizen under a certain income threshold $100,000 or something instead of burning up that money dropping bombs and firing interceptor missiles and all the other expenses that come along with an unnecessary war that was started illegally (and raising energy prices and destabilizing the world in the process)? What a f****** shitty timeline we're in.
4
Wompatuckrule 4 days ago +11
General and President [Dwight Eisenhower imagined just that:](https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/address-the-chance-for-peace-delivered-before-the-american-society-newspaper-editors) >Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. >It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. >The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. >It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. >It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. >We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. >We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. >This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking. >This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. >These plain and cruel truths define the peril and point the hope that come with this spring of 1953.

It's so funny to me reading your comment and then seeing you apparently have a PHD in physics and music and are still somehow this unaware of the world and your perspective. > What a f****** shitty timeline we're in. No, you know what a shitty timeline would be? The one where you're born in Iran instead of living in the US getting dual degrees and doing whatever you want and spending your free time musing on Listnook about philosophy. But I guess that takes too much thinking and self realization for the physics/music PHD. If only all those people and women in Iran that want to be free and live like you knew about your energy prices, right?
0
blewnote1 3 days ago +1
Huh? I don't have a PhD, but that's unimportant to my perspective or awareness of the world. Sure, being born in Iran and having not only a repressive theocratic regime making life miserable for my country AND having to deal with the consequences of the stupidity of the Americans for electing a cruel moron with designs to be a dictator himself blowing up the country would be a shitty experience for me. But what's your point? So would being a Jew in Germany during WW2 or Chilean during Pinochet's reign of terror, or any other number of horrible events humans have had to endure over the course of history. My point was that in the country in which I had the fortune to be born, my fellow citizens are so dumb that they managed to reelect the worst president we've ever had and put into motion the events that are now unfolding. Untold cruelty inflicted against the immigrant population here, reckless and irrational destruction of global trade through tariffs, destabilizing the world order by bullying allies and cozying up to the bad actors in other countries, and now an illegal war against a country that posed no threat to us (and is arguably in the situation it is in because of prior meddling by our country), among numerous other bad things. So yes, from my perspective, as I posted in my original comment, we could find many ways here in America to better spend our money that would improve our society (or even the world, because I think investing in foreign countries is much better than fighting with them) instead of inflicting more pain on the citizens of Iran, who have already suffered so much. And I think this is a shitty timeline for everyone, not just the Americans or Iranians, because we all will have to live with the consequences of the morons in my country for at least another 3 years.

United-Adagio1543 4 days ago -1
Your costs are representative of what other countries pay, not what US pays, these costs are about 3-6 times higher. The foreign military weapon sales fund the US versions. The shahed 136 drones are about $50k-$60k/piece.
-1
Wompatuckrule 4 days ago +8
No, for the Patriot & Tomahawk missiles I drew from sources about the US military budget so it isn't the "sticker price" for other nations. Even so it's still pennies on the dollar creating a huge imbalance on the battlefield.

Not the point of my response nor the original comment. The spirit of the original comment was trying to make Iran look good relative to the U.S. Anyways, I also meant to say Iran signed off on regional terror, and green-lit Hamas October strike on Israel just when there was normalization of relations between Israel/Saudi/Qatar, so that should be number one on the guy aboves a comment lol.

10
HardlyW0rkingHard 4 days ago +2
Assuming you can push for regime change in a country as large as Iran in less than a month is crazy. Just because Hormuz is closed doesn't mean it will stay that way. Nor does it mean that Iran is winning by any stretch of the imagination. A very large percentage of Iran's GDP is tied to oil. They are also losing oil sales and senior officials at an alarming late.
2
dunneetiger 4 days ago +5
Thinking that forced regime change works is ignoring the last few centuries.
5
HardlyW0rkingHard 4 days ago +1
Regime change will happen after these strikes are done. It's something Iranians will have to do themselves. However it simply wasn't possible considering they tried in January and tens of thousands were massacred.

Yeah the war isn't going according to plan but Iran is still losing, they won't recover for at least 2 generations. The Americans have failed in their strategic objective (the destruction of the IRGC and the end of the Ayatollah government) but Iran has also lost. The American homeland will still be wealthier and more developed than a vast majority of the world, Iran won't even have the per capita GDP of India or Pakistan after this is over.

Iran can keep the Strait closed indefinitely, this will slowly erode the world's economy. Especially those countries that have resisted electrification, like the US has. Countries like China on the other hand, which have invested heavily in electrification, will flourish. If Iran were to completely abolish the old regime and rejoin the world. They could rebuild their country rather quickly. Comparable to the rest of industrialized nations in 20 years less. As quickly as Dubai transformed, the whole of Iran could as well.
1
TreatAffectionate453 4 days ago +6
>Countries like China on the other hand, which have invested heavily in electrification, will flourish. China still heavily relies on exports so even if it had no reliance on oil - it actually does still need oil - the crashing of fossil fuel reliant economies would still be extremely harmful to it. China's strength may rise relative to the US, but it'd be diminished overall. Additionally, the US is a net energy exporter so it'll probably feel less of the brunt of the oil shock. That doesn't mean that Trump hasn't sabotaged the US economically, diplomatically, and militarily with this war. He may have created the US's Suez moment. However, that's because he destroyed the last bit of international trust that the US had rather than oil shortages.

Iran had some portion of 1.18 million professional military, 5-12 million militia, PMF brought in from Iraq and the portion of \~5.1 million 11-17 years old boys that joined up on the ground. Thousands or tens of thousands of drones. US had an estimated 12 to 96 soldiers on the ground. Two little birds, some drones and significant air support on delayed request. The US had to take big risks like flying refueling tankers and cargo planes into Iran. It did expose Iran's glass cannon approach to war. The 'airbase' for searching is \~500 km from Kuwaiti City, most of that inside of Iran. We've seen special forces operations play out in Ukraine, risky air movements deep behind enemy lines and drones destroy special service soldiers. Especially when this is going on for \~48 hours. Iran's inability to make US special forces teams fail the objective and combat ineffective so deep in their own country is not a sign of competence. The promise was that US ground forces would be made combat ineffective by drones. The reality was no deaths. Not to say the US should send ground invasion forces, but this a massive combat, diplomatic and PR loss for Iran.

You don’t understand that war isn’t a game show especially when you are the aggressor and everything you are doing is destroying your credibility and soft power. When you have a war, it is to attain specific objectives, not attain (maybe) your objectives and create a new situation that is much worse than when you started. There is also long and short term costs involved. Two examples to help you understand that it isn’t Call of Duty. 1) Trump has spent probably about 40-50B$ already and is asking for 200B$ more. That is the toll rate for 125 000 ship passages. That would be the tolls for 1000 ships a year for 125 years and we could hope a negotiated settlement would occur way before that and no one is getting killed. And no infrastructure is getting destroyed that increase the price of oil. 2) So Israel and the US are tired of fighting Iran after a year so they nuke it to make them surrender. Maybe yes, maybe no but the radiation is permeating the air in the region, the ground water, the oil and the food. Did the US win if Iran says uncle? If so, who and how do you police Iran for say 10 years and at what cost? Who rebuilds Iran and who pays? Get it?

23
enigmaticowl 4 days ago +22
Are you seriously assuming that they weren’t already maximally motivated to capture and torture the downed airmen before this? They tried desperately to get them (including advertising substantial rewards to civilians and mobilizing IRGC forces and resources to try to locate and capture the downed WSO in particular), it’s not like rubbing their failure in their faces is suddenly making some difference. It’s almost like that’s what enemies do to enemies during conflicts… But no, it must just be the post-rescue gloating that’s going to make Iran go from unmotivated to motivated the next time they have an American combatant behind enemy lines…
22
Cobrastrikenana 4 days ago -4
Well they didn’t torture the hostages back in the 70’s. I think you’re projecting the US onto Iran.
-4
enigmaticowl 4 days ago +5
What an absolute joke (or you forgot the /s?). They absolutely tortured those hostages (both physically and psychologically), *and* they weren’t even enemy belligerents/POWs during an ongoing war (like these guys would have been) that have much higher likelihood of holding valuable information to be elicited upon interrogation (not to mention the obviously higher state of animus against combatants during a war and the increased self-perception of “legitimacy” or reduced feelings of guilt/restraint toward torturing actual militants/combatants as opposed to diplomats and civilians).

That’s what they’re telling us. What else has this administration told us that’s actually true?

Seems like showboating for the president and his maga base. This is a probably the probably the only way he can get trumps attention to brag and also impress the base so he doesn’t get fired.

What’s the name of the soldier? They’re not going to give a name. It’s probably just nothing more than a propaganda game show to throw some chum into the water in attempt to save face. The entire timeline is an absolute clown show for America. If this would’ve happened in operation Desert Storm or in the Iraq war or Afghanistan, we would know the name of the soldier. No name, means no traceability which means weaponized propaganda until an accountable detailed front to back narrative is established.

1. US obliterates Iran air defenses 23 times according to the orange murder clown 2. Iran nevertheless shoots down two of the best jets the US has, each worth possibly 90 million dollars 3. US rescues pilot and mocks Iran and thinks they won the exchange?

Possible_Pop_8033 4 days ago +3
Man, bragging about getting your super advanced fighter jet shot down by a f****** slingshot sure is a lane to pick. What a chode.

I remember a time when the CIA didn’t openly talk about missions it’s taking on. Is that just me not noticing, or have things changed and this is abnormal?

They probably want to talk about it rather than have Trump drone on and on with the end result of him saying too much.

Biden never rescued down airmen in Iran.  A couple ships did get through the Strait yesterday.  Biden never got a ship past an Iranian naval blockade.  Biden never took a cognitive test, let alone score better than any of the doctors have ever seen. /s

The US lost 3 massively expensive aircraft in the course of these wholly avoidable events. Naturally, this is a great opportunity to make fun of Iran.

Aren’t we the ones who had to destroy our own fighter jets after they were shot down by a country that, checks notes, our leader claimed had no air defense?

1
Stocky_Platypus 4 days ago +1
We havent even seen the people yet. There are pictures of the downed jet and there are verified reports that the US bombed the hell out of the location. I dont trust one word this administration says. For all we know the jets went down, the US bombed them to shit to cover it up and then says they rescued them. the administration has zero credibility.
1
crewl_hand_luke42 4 days ago +1
Yeah that rescue only cost 400 billion in hardware.

aluke000 4 days ago +1
Stunning deception campaign to divert attention away from the humiliation war being fought with no plan, costing billions per day and threatening the safety of all americans going forward with all the new anti-US terrorism this is breeding.

Humiliated is a strong word. Iran can claim it too humiliated the US by bringing the plane down. CIA director needs to rethink this one.

Tip to the CIA: if you are a highly secretive organization specializing in intelligence and espionage, don’t go gloating and taking credit for a successful operation after the fact.
