To be clear it wasn’t like that before 9/11. Security at airports was standardized internationally in 1973. It was just done by private companies with varying degrees of equipment, competence, fucks to give, etc
At some airports there wasn’t much but at SFO at least there was the same general setup, metal detector, X-ray for baggage, sometimes a pat down.
