c-130s have been flying since the 50s and a lot of these airframes are genuinely old. some countries are operating planes older than the pilots flying them

Planes are quite often older than the pilots operating them, especially in the military.

You mean to tell me you don’t think the pilot was in his mid 70s?

From the article.. *Flight data shows the plane was a C-130H Hercules, an older model of the C-130 series that first entered service in March 1965, according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The plane had been donated to the Colombian Air Force by the US Air Force in September 2020.* So it was an Air Force cast off that lasted less than 6 full years after we donated it.

I'd be interested to see info on this specific tail number, H models were produced into the mid-90's so it's a crapshoot as far as age. I tried looking up the tail number from the picture (1816?) but that shows an E-model.

Yeah who knows when the specific crashed plane got made in such a big production window. Pretty sure Colombia wasn’t maintaining it properly though based on the Colombia presidents statement. Will probably have to wait for more development to see if their reporting is wrong. The photo was too blurry for me to read it’s tail number

The little bit of video I saw showed it at a climb angle but failing to hold altitude, listing a little to one side. My nickle is still on engine troubles but its likely the takeoff weight made those troubles critical.

Many forces also force out older pilots. Young pilots, old/finicky airframes, and a complete lack of prudence. Idk how this could possibly go wrong.

114 (125 if you count crew) passengers is a \*lot\* on a 130, especially if they have gear and you need enough fuel for more than a short hop. Speculation but at what was likely max takeoff weight you don't have any room for engine issues.

What's with the sudden increase of non-combat c-130 crashes
