If you’re shopping for your favorite Calbee chips in Japan and see that familiar bag in black and white – it’s not a printing mistake.

Edit: well, this was a half informed take. Look at comment below this one for more information. I doubt they will lower the price of the actual product. Given that, as per the article, the Japanese government has no idea why this company is declaring shortage when naphtha and ink requirments across the nation are met satisfactorily, this seems like a move to cut down on costs which will increase the profit even if the old price is kept on the label.

Because it is available but at a much higher price. Top companies can perhaps weather it easier than companies smaller than them and so They are resorting to cost cutting measures (and reducing the amount of chips too). There’s something like 20 companies that are taking similar measures here in Japan due to this situation at the moment.

Huh. Now that's something I did not think about. The price of the raw materials is definitely getting higher and thus will affect the production cost. Even transportation cost would be more than it used to be (most likely). Thanks for the clarification. The article gave me different ideas.

There’s currently a bit of distrust brewing regarding what the government claimed regarding supply and availability due to this story and similar ones over the past day so that’s understandable!
