Oh no, the bad idea that everyone could tell would be bad turned out to be bad

Theater chain notable for kicking people out for using phones starts requiring people use phones

Saw Project Hail Mary at my local Alamo last week and they had added "*Except When Ordering!" disclaimers to all the old "Put Your Phone Away, Let Our Staff Know If Someone Is Texting" pre-roll stuff. You just know everyone in the company who isn't getting an executive bonus realizes how f****** stupid this is and hates it.

Same thing for me last night. The most infuriating thing was the “funny” line of “we totally get the irony of reporting someone being on their phone from your phone. Just don’t be a jerk. HAHAHA.”- Sony Like no. We came here for a unique and pure theater experience. You fucked it up and your reduced menu keeps getting worse and worse. The first new chain that rips off Alamo’s original vision, I’ll be there day 1. For now, just going to slum it at AMC or Regal and save myself some money.

I feel the same way. I’m from Austin, I’ve been going to Alamo since I was a kid and it felt soooo cool. I have so much affection for this brand. But they decimated their menu and now eliminated one of the things that set them apart. It’s heartbreaking, and nowadays I prefer just going out to eat before or after the movie and going to a regular theater.

Eating in the dark blows.

spinbutton Apr 1, 2026 +19
Popcorn is still a great treat at the movies, but I agree when it comes to pizza or a salad. I really loved going to our local Alamo. I hope they can fix this ordering problem without closing our theater. I suggest the Sony execs take a salary cut

For real. I never got the appeal of having a meal while watching a movie in the dark.

Used to go to Alamo all the time when they had one location. Times have changed
2
Queef_Stroganoff44 Apr 1, 2026 +6
I say this all the time on here, but my then-GF worked at one of the early locations . It was WILD. I still can’t believe some of the parties they threw there. Except for the very top tier / owners everyone there was in their 20s. They would allow managers…again, in their 20s… to put together Christmas parties / painting parties, etc. More than once I left the theater with the sun coming up only to head to someone else’s house and finish partying. People would hook up in empty theatres. The draft beer would mysteriously not go near as far that week. They even allowed us to bring sleeping bags and crash while watching horror movies sometimes. It was a blast. I got to not just meet but actually hang out a bit with Richard Elfman (Director of Forbidden Zone and Danny’s brother). Someone asked him what Danny was up to and he said “Let’s find out “ and called him. He had supposedly just gotten off the phone with Tim Burton regarding the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” soundtrack. Now it feels so corporatized. They’re all in expensive strip malls and the joy and charm has been sucked out of them.

Not the one I’ve been to lol. Also I just hate the name of that place

Fair enough, the one near me is solid so i guess it probably just depends on franchise location for that one. Im sure it will be enshittified soon lol

Our local Alamo was bought by Flix Brewhouse. Same model, they even kept the staff. Sadly they also use phones for ordering, and they only do "mainstream" movie events.
13
GonzoMcFonzo Apr 1, 2026 +8
I like my local flix, but it's not just a converted Alamo. The seatbacks are taller, so I can't see the light of phones in front of me. Plus there's an extra half step between tiers of seats so when the servers hunch-walk past my seat, they actually *are* well below my line of sight.
8
Rauk88 Apr 1, 2026 +4
I’ve been to Flix several times since it’s closer to me than Drafthouse and phone ordering has never been an issue. I still don’t like the way AD is treating their employees.
4
Boomshockalocka007 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Oh noooo. The recent Alamo in my city shutdown and also became a Flix. But I havent been back yet to compare.

The new Alamo drafthouse in my city shut down 2 months ago. A new place called Flix Brewhouse has taken over and already reopened back up. Its supposed to be very similiar to Alamo. I havent been back yet, but I have never heard of Flix. I am curious to see how they compare when I go.

“Naw, man, I wasnt scrolling TikTok. Ive just been ordering food for the past ten minutes. I don't know what the people behind me are talking about.” If that hasn't been used as an excuse yet, it will any minute now.
35
wiscokid81 Apr 1, 2026 +9
Went to a place like that near me, Star Cinema Grill to PHM too.. these side lights they have weren’t completely out, you could see everything in the whole place. Guess it makes it easier for staff to deliver food, but it sucks for a movie experience… constantly hearing conversations about food, order options.. kinda ruined it.

They got bought out, as I recall. It's not being run by the same group anymore, so the enshittification has begun in earnest.
49
ghalta Apr 1, 2026 +21
They went bankrupt during covid and the founders gave up majority ownership to private equity to avoid liquidation. Private equity sold to Sony last year and they then accelerated the enshittification.

Management watch their movies at home
57
Shopworn_Soul Mar 31, 2026 +17
Oh, come on. Michael Kustermann probably watches movies in a theater. ...in his house.

“Geoffrey, prepare the theatre. Lady Kustermann and I would like to watch Big Momma's House this evening.”

True, going to the theater might force them to interact with the poors.
22
PalindromemordnilaP_ Mar 31, 2026 +12
Management predicted it too. They just don't care because it will increase the bottom line long enough for the CEO to collect his bonus and jump.
12
GuacKiller Mar 31, 2026 +9
The phone data they get and sell, probably is keeping them afloat.
9
Late_Stage_Exception Apr 1, 2026 +44
It’s weird, went to an Alamo this weekend and they had the phone ordering thing set up…but only till the end of the previews. Once those were done we were told to put phones away and go back to using paper. I guess their enforcement of it is regional? All that said, they’ve seriously jacked up their prices and lowered portions since the last time we went (last month), so we are heavily considering if we will go back again.
44
turkeygiant Apr 1, 2026 +12
This drives me nuts, I get it you make your money on concessions, but if you start squeezing me on both ends as far as price AND portion size I'm not going to order anything at all. I'll just stop at a family restaurant for a bite on my way home, I can almost guarantee there is one in your plaza. I think most people are willing splurge a little bit if they are at a theatre, a convention centre, or a sporting event and they want something to eat. But what you are serving up has to actually feel worthwhile and the easiest way to do that is good portions. I was at a card show recently and ordered "fresh breaded tenders and fries", and they serve up three tiny pieces of chicken and a handful of fries on a little tray. It took me like 3 mins to eat and I was still hungry after. Meanwhile for the same price if not cheaper from our local award winning wing place a single "chicken tender dinner" comes with enough fries and chicken to easily feed two people plus sides coleslaw and baked beans. I know next time I go to an event at that location I will just be skipping lunch and getting something to go later.
12
southwick Apr 1, 2026 +3
Alamo was a fun and unique experience. Ours would do special events for new releases. As the food prices continued to rise and they stopped doing cool opening day events we stopped going. I can have the same experience for less now at a cinemark. It's sad too, was one of our favorite places
3
ghalta Apr 1, 2026 +3
It's being rolled out location by location. You still have the bridge system that was used most places last year before the full enshittification.

People who think phone meta-data is worth more than the actual product they sell
653
GuacKiller Mar 31, 2026 +88
Theatres sell popcorn and drinks. The data is worth more.
88
lord_james Mar 31, 2026 +123
Right… and when people stop coming to the expensive movie theatre that serves decent food and kicks people out for being loud and on their phones? How much is the metadata of zero people worth?
123
lordraiden007 Mar 31, 2026 +81
> How much is the metadata of zero people worth? How much debt can you legally saddle a company with before declaring it bankrupt? About that much.
81
tfbillc Mar 31, 2026 +40
That’s a problem for next quarter
40
AlienArtFirm Mar 31, 2026 +4
> Right… and when people stop coming to the expensive movie theatre The premium movie theater chain here (serves you food and beer during the movie) switched to a shitty phone ordering system but that place is PACKED all the time. So who knows what people want and will put up with to be able to get drunk at the movies. I still go occasionally just way WAY less as they've cheapened the experience while maintaining restaurant food service and prices.
4
Practical-Cellist647 Mar 31, 2026 +13
No, it isn't. It's valuable en masse. But not per customer, not compared popcorn and soda.

Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann was originally hired by private equity as to be in charge of “digital transformation” and introduced the QR code / mobile ordering system himself. It was shelved multiple times and had horrible reviews. Then he was made CEO, and rammed the project through. That’s was we’re seeing today.

It bothers me that people think accountants decide how money is to be spent.
10
majinspy Apr 1, 2026 +5
This can happen. I'm in middle management . I approve certain expenses. This process involves emailing accounting and telling them who I want to be paid what. Sometimes, these are higher amounts than "normal". You know who determines if we're going to do it or not in those situations? Still me, actually. If they think I'm "giving away the store", making errors, or just am out and out being fraudulent, then they should contact someone who outranks me. Instead, they hit me with passive aggressive questions that try to get me to explain or justify my actions *to them* more than I have. The amounts in question are in the low hundreds and amount, from me, to no more than $1000 a week. Meanwhile, my team's revenue is about 35MM a year at a company with over 150MM in revenue. This ain't Big Bob's Burger Joint or whatever. /rant Sorry, been a long day...
5
thenasch Apr 1, 2026 +2
Sounds like it's still management making the decision.
2
sozar Mar 31, 2026 +7
Agreed as a higher up IT person that has to help implement ridiculous shit like this. It’s taken me years but I’m up to about a 50/50 ratio if I can politely convince the executives to rethink their wackier ideas.

StillStanding_96 Mar 31, 2026 +27
The theatre industry is dying and there’s only so many things that theatre owners can do to affect the viewer experience. Desperation leads to decisions that would never be considered in better circumstances
27
Massive_Weiner Mar 31, 2026 +3
It’s an inevitability that we’re slowly watching unfurl before us. Once streaming became established, it was already over.

bolerobell Mar 31, 2026 +20
Alamo was thriving until COVID. They over extended themselves to expand quickly then Covid killed attendance for a couple of years. The debt came due and they had to sell to private equity who then sold to Sony. The PE firm ownership hurt them, but Sony really doesn’t understand the brand.
20
FTZulu Mar 31, 2026 +9
Sony
9
Interactive_CD-ROM Mar 31, 2026 +8
That’s not entirely accurate. The current CEO of Alamo (who officially is now a Sony VP) was previously the tech bro who personally oversaw the switch to QR code ordering, years before Sony bought the company. So no, it wasn’t Sony. It was Michael Kustermann.

Feels like one of those things where you know it was going to be bad when they bought them a few years back, but weren't sure exactly how it would get worse and when. Well, here it is.
140
Crewman_Guy_Fleegman Apr 1, 2026 +14
I foolishly expected better. I assumed that with a theater being owned by a Studio and not a middleman they would obviously see more value in elevating the experience. There were direct financial incentives for their own movies if they could attract more people to theaters. I had forgotten this was Sony and the decision makers are the same people who thought Morbius was a good idea. These vile idiots may as well be private equity.
14
lot183 Mar 31, 2026 +33
I dunno, I kind of talked myself into that at least it wasn't private equity. But no, Sony has been just as bad. I don't even have one anymore, our local Alamo closed with no warning two months ago. Though the guy who did the programming moved on a while ago to a recently renovated and re-opened indie theater and he's been programing tons of cool stuff so at least it lives on in spirit
33
MindHead78 Apr 1, 2026 +3

5
Interactive_CD-ROM Mar 31, 2026 +109
This has been talked about in some length over on /r/AlamoDrafthouse, but I want to make it very clear about who deserves credit for trashing the company: It wasn’t Sony that did this: it was Alamo CEO Michael Kustermann. He was brought in by private equity in 2021 as the “chief digital officer” (aka dude with an MBA) who wanted to be “transformative” and “innovative.” So he led the entire QR code / mobile ordering project. It was his baby since the moment he was hired. But the project kept getting horrible feedback. It was shelved multiple times. Then as soon as he became CEO, he rammed it through. Now he’s a Sony VP so, technically, I guess you can say it’s Sony’s fault. But to be clear, this entire debacle was one man’s call: Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann.

Sony bought a theatre chain?!! Are we going back to the early days of screens owned by studios again
13
tue2day Mar 31, 2026 +21
Yep lol, the case that ended vertical integration and specifically, production companies owning theaters was overturned in 2020. Sony is the first production company to own a theater chain in uhhhh...decades
21
bolerobell Mar 31, 2026 +3
The studios definitely want to go in that direction. First run movies in their own flagship theaters (at a premium ticket price higher than now) followed by streaming on their own service. All that to maximize what they can make off the movies.
3

They had already gone through the roof due to covid
2
Highmax1121 Mar 31, 2026 +3
I remember my first Drafthouse experience. it was the mid 2000s, there was just a handful locations and the one near me opened up in an old shopping center. it smelled heavy of urine, as before it opened the location was used by homeless squatters. it was anime mondays at the time and it was show Divergence Eve. never been before, never heard of the anime. never regretted it. I went for years after that. Anime Mondays, Troma movie Tuesdays, Action Movie Wednesdays, horror movie Thursdays. plus Tues was 2 bucks off beer and Thursdays was 2 bucks off burgers. that same location got bought out by Santikos during COVID, and all the life of the theater was completely sucked out. the comic shop that attached itself to the theater broke lease and moved elsewhere, and I never went back to that location again. the Drafthouse that do run today though, are a ghosts of its past self. the prices in general are just too high these days and the shows are lacking.
3
Any-Tomorrow-7344 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Supposedly, this has been in the works before Sony, and is the current Alamo CEO’s initiative.
3
DefenderCone97 Mar 31, 2026 +434
I've straight up stopped going to Alamo with the new rules. Killed any desire to go for me. I'll go to my non profit indie theater that shows niche stuff where people respect movies and the AMC for big stuff.

thesammon Apr 1, 2026 +33
Project Hail Mary was our first visit to Alamo since they started enforcing all ordering through the QR code. The server basically went from seat-to-seat just telling people to use the code - which we could barely scan in the dim light of the theater - instead of actually being, you know, a server. I would be shocked if they don't get laid off at some point in the near future. Payment was also a hassle since they didn't allow for Google Wallet or Apple Pay on the website and we didn't have our credit card saved to autofill. There weren't any physical menus anymore either, so we had to browse everything on our tiny screens and navigate through their bizarre UI to find what we wanted. It turns out they also got rid of my favorite starter (buffalo wings) since the last time I attended for Anaconda, when they were "suggesting" mobile ordering but still allowed for going through a server if desired. Food prices had gone up, too, to the point that we would rather just eat beforehand. I have always been a die-hard Alamo attendee, but this left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'll probably look at our local AMC for tickets first before Alamo, since it's closer and less expensive. What a way to trash a brand and all the good will that they've built up over the years. (Fun fact - the "Colorado Alamo Drafthouse location in Westminster" mentioned in the article is my local Alamo where I saw Project Hail Mary and dealt with all of the above. I really hope the team there and CWA 7777 can get some good leverage over the corporate bullshit that's being shoveled on everyone, because they don't deserve this either.)
33
pagan7poetry Apr 1, 2026 +8
That’s my Alamo too! Haven’t been since the switch, and now it sounds like I won’t bother going back. Private equity ruins everything it touches
8
AnnenbergTrojan Mar 31, 2026 +47
I've been there once since the shift and ordered everything I wanted before the movie with no problem, but there were a lot of people around me confused and displeased with being told they had to use their phone for ANY order. If you're the kind of person who is fine with rolling into a theater during trailers, ordering with the phone becomes way more stressful.
47
thepensivepoet Apr 1, 2026 +5
With the paper system I would plan out my next couple of beers and have them already written and kept in a stack so if/when I wanted to order something I just had to place it in the stand without any need for light. Then it turns out my superpowers include ordering everything they are out of every f****** time so I’d end up having a whispering chat with the servers anyway. I solved these and many more Alamo experience related issues by not going back.
5
that_baddest_dude Apr 1, 2026 +3
Yeah I went to a friggin galaxy theater for project hail Mary. F*** em. Not the first time a good place rapidly went to shit because of insane C level decisions. RIP Verts.
3
Joe_Gee1000 Mar 31, 2026 +172
Good for them! Recent changes have ruined the entire experience. I do not want to be on my phone for even one second during a movie. It is meant to be a safe haven. Now that ordering and browsing (no physical menus) is moved to phone it is both a headache AND a distraction! They halved the staff, too. No human service whatsoever. Can't even modify a drink on the app. Alamo was supposed to be a full-service experience. Now you get better service at an AMC. Don't be a part of Sony's trial to see how much shit a movie-going audience will eat. This is where I say no. Phones suck. And they suck most when they are taken out in a movie theater.
172
HappyGilOHMYGOD Mar 31, 2026 +112

123
tomandshell Mar 31, 2026 +94
The new owner doesn’t care about the theater experience and instead wants to make more money on concession sales during the movie.
94
HappyGilOHMYGOD Mar 31, 2026 +36
Ohhhh so the same greed that is killing Regal, CMX, AMC, and basically every other theater chain is *also* killing this one. Who could have seen that coming???????
36
AnnenbergTrojan Mar 31, 2026 +36
It's not really that. People aren't ordering that much during movies at Alamo even before the QR codes were added. The theory was that by going entirely to phones, they wouldn't have servers crouching between seats telling people that it's last call for orders and then placing the checks on their tables during the climax of the movie. But the thing is, I think fumbling for your phone, turning it on or making sure it's silent so you don't disturb people, scanning a QR code and then flicking through a mobile site to find the button that lets you order more popcorn takes your attention away from the movie way more than a server trying to be as minimally intrustive as possible while taking your written order for more popcorn and giving you the check.
36
substandardgaussian Mar 31, 2026 +10
But then the burden of logistics is placed on the server rather than on you, the customer. The server needs to get paid for their service, you do not. Now they can fire some servers, because now the customer is doing their work, and pocket the difference. With spherical cows in a vacuum at single digit IQ, this is a good idea!
10
valeyard89 Apr 1, 2026 +3
They still charge 18% mandatory tip on top, despite getting less service now.

It's like a game of Ker-Plunk. The business has dozens of those little sticks, each contributing to something wonderful and brand-defining. But each one of those sticks costs money to enforce, enable, or provide. So business-type people pull one stick out. They save a few thousand dollars, and everything's fine. Then they pull another stick out. A few more thousand dollars saved. They pull out more and more sticks, and maybe one marble falls, but everything is still largely fine. The business is saving money, the brand is still largely the same, and the patrons have acclimated to the reduced menu, drop in standards, slower service, and higher prices. But eventually, one of those sticks is going to cause a cascade of marbles to come raining down. That's what the shift to digital ordering was. In an attempt to consolidate ordering into a singular building-wide system (and save money on order slips and tiny pens), they've alienated their customer base and broke their entire business ethos. And just like Ker-Plunk, once those marbles fall, they're not going back in.

They were acquired by Sony Pictures some years back. It’s been downhill ever since.  I used to go to the SF location all the time, but I’ve heard about poor food quality and questionable food handling safety, poor sound quality and uncomfortable new seats, and now the new ordering system that requires a phone app. All while prices are going up.

I’ve shared this a couple times here, and I just want to make sure it’s clear. The purchase by Sony isn’t what caused the chain to go downhill so much as it was the events that occurred before Sony: Private equity installing the new CEO See here: https://www.listnook.com/r/AlamoDrafthouse/s/tPM5rh29sa

Great for people who like movies and going to the theater, less great for Sony executives looking to reduce labor costs in an effort to increase the return on their recent investment.

The NYC branches had a strike and just won this exact battle and guaranteed minimum shifts. Customers here will not have to deal with that phone shit thanks to the striking workers. This win-win scenario is achievable!

Last few times I was at the BK one I didn’t have to use the phone ordering at all, even before the movies started so it’s definitely not the only way to start a tab.

TBH this seems like a decent middle ground. Having seen PHM there I DID appreciate them not interrupting the climax of the movie to grab card and then come back through with receipts. Obviously also my personal single experience, but I didn't see anyone on their phones the whole movie aside from trailers and ordering. I wonder if part of the desire for this is fewer refills because people don't want to get out their phones.

screwikea Mar 31, 2026 +21
Sucks all around. Alamo was in dire straits a couple of times, but the move was an obvious misunderstanding of the demographic for Alamo. No phones is kind of *the* thing with them. Without that, they're just another theater.

I would go one step further and say "ordering food during movies" doesn't belong. Get your popcorn, drinks, candy, etc. at the concession stand beforehand or go without.

ItsDomorOm Mar 31, 2026 +44
I felt the same way until I went to an Alamo. I really enjoy the way they do it. The servers never distracted me or got in the way and ordering with a little piece of paper is super easy and quick. They also make a huge deal about two strikes in your out regarding talking during the movie so I always supported them... Until now.

I feel the way Alamo does(did) it is very tasteful and respectful of the movie going experience.

HappyGilOHMYGOD Mar 31, 2026 +6
I have a theater by me that does this. I don't mind the food being delivered during the movie at all (workers are fairly quiet about it) but I do think it should be mandatory to have "at your seat" orders in no later than 15 minutes before the start of the movie.
6
jl_theprofessor Mar 31, 2026 +8
I mean, that’s always been Alamo’s shtick, and they’ve traditionally done it well. Your pizza and hamburger aren’t going to just be sitting up front to be served and taken to your seat.
8
NOODL3 Mar 31, 2026 +5
I don't mind it in the smaller boutique theaters with like 30 recliners. It's pretty sweet to be able to get a beer or cocktail delivered mid-movie and there are few enough orders that servers aren't coming in and out all that often. In a full sized theater though, and especially with everybody having to whip out their phones for every order, it's just obnoxious.
5
cheapwalkcycles Mar 31, 2026 +6
That's the whole business model of Alamo, which is why I strongly prefer traditional independent theaters. Nothing more annoying than someone loudly chewing buffalo wings and chili cheese fries during a serious moment in a movie.
6
Dlark17 Mar 31, 2026 +45
Went to our first Alamo showing this weekend since having our kid at the start of the year. Holy shit, the change is *bad*. Not only is the phone use annoying, they try to play it off cute in their usual "No talking, no texting" intro (which fails completely). Oh, and the shift to phone orders means that the staff has been *gutted*, so no one to check your seats, no one to physically confirm your order... staff has been gutted, and that's easily the worst part of all this. Solidarity with the striking workers - hopefully our local Alamo team does the same, and corpos are forced to reckon with this truly asinine decision.
45
givemeajinglefingal Mar 31, 2026 +41
Here's to hoping the message gets through. I've submitted multiple surveys letting them know my dissatisfaction with the new method. Thankfully, a lot of the locations only allow it pre-movie but it's still a huge step in the wrong direction for both employees and the customer experience.
41
sludgezone Mar 31, 2026 +36
It’s as bad as everyone says it is. You can’t even pay with Apple Pay, I had to pull my card out to enter in the damn info while the movie was going. This shit is going to tank the company completely and it’s well deserved, just feel bad for the employees.
36
latelyimawake Mar 31, 2026 +24
AND Apple Pay doesn’t work?? What a clusterfuck. The last thing I want to be doing during a movie is trying to read the numbers off my credit card and input them into a tiny phone screen.
24
yotothyo Mar 31, 2026 +11
Yeah this was really the cherry on top. It's like the climax of the movie and they're rushing you to pay the bill, so you pull out your phone and realize you have to hand enter all of your credit card info to pay the bill. F****** ridiculous.

11
ajaxmcblastfist Mar 31, 2026 +44
Used it for the first time the other night. Our server was very clear about how upset they were about it. Well, we used it and didn’t get some of our items. With the changes, you can’t tell if the system messed up or the server messed up. An industry based on keeping your phones away is really taking a wild swing here.
44
Derpykins666 Mar 31, 2026 +21
I'm sure there's a lot of people that would not ever set foot in a theater that allows phones out and being used during a movie, especially when you're paying premium prices for food and tickets.
21
BestDogPetter Mar 31, 2026 +8
Did they roll out ordering from your phone during the movie elsewhere? In Austin it's still something you can do before the movie starts, and then you do the traditional write it down if you want something else during the movie
8
SuperMysteriouslyHid Mar 31, 2026 +13
Yes they did in SF too, and its garbage. They took away the buttons and the pen and papers too. Also annoying they used to have refillable iced tea, and its still listed that way, but there is no way to ask for a refill. Also they have stupid counters now that are weirdly high with no jacket and coat hooks, which means your purse is going on the sticky ground. Also you miss whole scenes cause the phone thing is also really hard to navigate Also their food has taken a shrinkification nose dive.
13
drubi305 Mar 31, 2026 +9
We didn't get option to write it down in Austin and our phones could never pick up the WiFi to order. It was such a mess.

BestDogPetter Mar 31, 2026 +2
Weird, which location? I've been to Mueller and South Lamar in the last couple of weeks and had the option to order from someone before the movie who told us to put up an order card if we wanted something else

Went to a Master Pancake in February at Village - they showed the original "Don't Talk" PSA (Girl voice mail cussing about getting tossed for using her phone) which I had not seen played in probably 10 years. It was great to hear, but was also sad because I realized it was probably the last time I would go to Alamo. So to Sony: "Yeah, I was wondering if you guys actually enjoy treating your customers like pieces of shit. Because that's how I felt when I went to the (Sony version) Alamo Drafthouse" In case you have not seen it in some time. FranknStein7 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Interesting. I have been extremely worried about this whole saga. I just went to my local Alamo Drafthouse to see Project Hail Mary though, and phones were only permitted for ordering before the movie started. After the movie started you still had to use pencil and paper. I was fine with that compromise.
3
hippiex Mar 31, 2026 +4
Majestic did that here and it’s terrible.
4
Shakmaaaaaaa Mar 31, 2026 +4
Sounds like they could have easily avoided all of this if they did something like "Order on your phone before the movie starts and then use the original paper for additions".
4
goldlion84 Apr 1, 2026 +3
That’s how they are doing it in Dallas
3
blackmobius Mar 31, 2026 +3
They really switched to a system that requires you to take out your phone and use an app to order food?
3
profane_vitiate Apr 1, 2026 +4
I cannot say this loudly enough. Alamo Drafthouse used to be the *only* theater I went to, specifically because they did not allow phones. All the people bitching about waiters being more disruptive were probably at a bad Alamo or something, I dunno. It was certainly never my experience, and the service is mostly very good. I will never go to an Alamo Drafthouse again as long as the cellphones for orders things exist. I am now going to go to Nitehawk, but the tickets keeps selling out here in NYC because everyone else is also pissed about it and going to Nitehawk.
4
braumbles Mar 31, 2026 +11
More proof that theater owners are why the industry is collapsing.
11
vanessajay Apr 1, 2026 +3
I got there 30 minutes early. Ordered pretty quickly. Some of the food came within 10 minutes. After 40 minutes and after the movie started, the rest of my food had still not arrived. I had to get on the app and navigate to find out how to “report a problem.” It was very annoying because I missed part of my movie. Also the food has gone way down hill.
3
valeyard89 Apr 1, 2026 +3
it takes like 2 seconds to write an order on paper vs 2 minutes of hunting for it on the app, then declining all the add-ons
3
Normal-Taro-1621 Mar 31, 2026 +5
Unfortunately Alamo seems to have gone to shit. The Indianapolis one is a mess and I cancelled my season pass membership after a particularly awful experience where a group behind me was being super disruptive but the staff didn’t do anything other than give them a warning and only after I called it out on a card.
5
turb0_encapsulator Mar 31, 2026 +7
people leave their house to stop interacting with their phones and interact with human beings. going to a movie theater, when you have endless movie options at home, is about as deliberate a choice as you can make in this regard.
7
MWH1980 Mar 31, 2026 +8
I had no idea how to use the new system recently, and just gave up.
8
Sandurz Mar 31, 2026 +8
Genuinely asking, do you ever order food online anywhere? Or do the QR self-service tab thing some restaurants have?
8
MWH1980 Mar 31, 2026 +5
This was the first time I had been back to an Alamo since they made this change. There weren’t even physical menus to look through under the table top thingies. I tried to QR code the thing during the film, but my camera just wouldn’t activate, so I just gave up. It became much more convoluted than the old-fashioned way. >:(
5
sex_on_wheels Apr 1, 2026 +2
Flix Brewhouse has a similar phone ordering system which they ask you to use for the initial order. They ask you to use the pen and paper once the movie has begun. Works out well. I have rarely seen someone take out their phone to order once the movie has started.
2
MailboxSlayer14 Apr 1, 2026 +2
It’s a shame this will probably lead to the end of Alamo if it’s not reverse
2
PunkRockMakesMeSmile Apr 1, 2026 +2
I'd rather see a flick in a non-food theater than see a flick in a theater where people are encouraged to be on their phones during the movie. What used to be a luxury is now a disincentive
2
Phrei_BahkRhubz Apr 1, 2026 +2
I used to love Alamo Drafthouse, but they've been going to shit lately. Last time I went, I took my daughter and niece to see the one about a girl who becomes a beaver. While ordering tickets online, I made sure I had the right location since there's three pretty close by but the moment hit purchase, I noticed the street name was wrong. I check and it turns out my seats are around 800 miles away. I don't like downloading apps I'll rarely use, but I had to in order to get a refund, which would have been fine, but then they just had to make it worse by refunding the tickets but pocketing the convince fees, which almost as much as a ticket on its own. I try to order the tickets via the app but they locked my account while the processed the refund (because that's a completely normal business practice), so I had to get my mom to order them for us. We finally get there a little late and the theater smells like an old person's house, the seats are worn to shit, and my arm rest is wobbly as hell. I look around for the little pencil and paper, couldn't find it, and thought I got luck having a huge nerd for a kid who brings a notebook to a movie, but the servers just ignored it. They seriously walked by at least 6 or 7 times , even ignoring me when I tried to get thier attention until about 40 minutes into the movie when a girl comes up to tell me I need to use the QR code. I'm like, "wtf? Since when does a theater want me to pull my phone out during a movie?" I try scanning it but it's dark ass hell, so Im waving my phone around like an a****** until she pulls out her phone to turn on her light, making me feel like an even bigger a****** just for wanting to order some f****** popcorn. Then one more slap in the face; 18% mandatory tip.
2
Solrac50 Apr 1, 2026 +2
When Alamo was sold it lost it’s vibe. Phone ordering meant a person didn’t have to monitor the theater for new orders. Some bean counter probably thought eliminating the time spent by that person saves a lot of money over a year without any thought that the no phones policy was an important reason for choosing to go to an Alamo theater.
2
brownarmyhat Mar 31, 2026 +3
We definitely won’t be going to an Alamo until this idea is reversed. If they don’t feel the employee strike I hope they feel the loss in ticket sales
3
bradg97 Mar 31, 2026 +2
I usually leave a tip even with the surcharge. But now there’s no service it’s just food running. And therefore no tip. The phone ordering experience was not great.

awayshewent Mar 31, 2026 +4
I used it the other day, in Colorado actually, and had a hard time because the internet was so slow. I had to use my friends phone. It’s such a bummer because going to Alamo was one of the things we loved about moving here, I guess we will just have to forgo the food. I cannot take my husband mentioning how long the ads are at AMC.
4
kienbazzle Apr 1, 2026 +3
Unpopular opinion (I guess): the Alamo experience has always been shit. Employees running around in front of you all movie is so distracting. Putting up a paper and then waiting 25 minutes before someone even picks it up. Bright light under the table for no reason. I’ve been to 2 showings at the Woodbury, MN Alamo since the new change and as long as you order your first item before the movie starts, like any sane person, the system works flawlessly. The seats are angled such that if people in front of you have ANY self awareness, you won’t see their phone. You still have employees running around all movie, though. 😔 Did the LOTR extended edition marathon 3 days ago and noticed someone on their phone twice (in 11 hours).
3
sk_starscream Mar 31, 2026 +1
Thing is that they're really not ready for it, my theater was having issues and the tickets (I suppose) were mixed up that the worker had to come and ask us while the movie was starting up.

I’m not catching another movie there until they change it back. Used to be my go-to spot to catch movies I really wanted to see. Saw Kill Bill The Whole Bloody Affair there a few months back and it was great. Little did I know they’d make this asinine change soon and that it would be potentially the last Drafthouse experience I’d have. Good one to end on, I guess.
