Complaints about progression in movies.

Posted by EveningAccountant321

There has to be a silver lining, right? You can't call every damn movie, TV show, or even video game with a female lead, or person of color as a lead, or any sighting of a gay/lesbian couple as "woke." Come on, it's ridiculous, and kind of annoying. So, I ask anyone here who is part of this group that calls media woke nowadays what conditions need to be met so that you don't consider a film with a female lead, a person of color as a lead, or gay/lesbian couple as woke?

Those people aren’t gonna have a real answer for you. Whatever the cult leader says is usually what they go along with

Just ask them to define “woke” and wait until they start calling you names.

Woke is a new word for PC or Political Correctness. Anything that those "hippy liberal types" would think is good is "PC gone crazy". "Political Correctness is ruining everything." We saw this already in the 90's or whenever. It's the same game. "Woke" is just the new word.

You'll not going to get a solid answer because "woke" has no meaning anymore. Woke is attached to anything those people hate. Just learn to ignore it.

\#1 I'm a guy, and I love it when movies and shows have a leading lady. :D \#2 I don't care about race. I'm white, and The Jeffersons is one of my favorite TV shows ever. LOL \#3 I'm a Christian and support American free speech. If people want to make movies/shows with gay/lesbian characters, that's there right to do so. I only ask that on the streaming services, just find some way to note LGBTQ content, and just treat that like a category or genre in the same vein as you would say science-fiction or South Korean or whatever. To me, calling something woke is like calling something stupid. It doesn't say anything if you don't say why.

There is no such condition. If the lead is not a straight white dude, they hate it

In my experience—and I’m just theorizing—people tend to complain about adapted material more than original material because there’s already a precedent for what the character is. In those circumstances, like live action Disney remakes, the choices feel political more than creative. People tend to not want to be preached to in their entertainment.

I’m Not against „woke“ people nor would i call anything that but sometimes I can understand people complaining about certain media being predominantly represented by females, poc, or queer people. In my perception it seems like Netflix was really going through a phase where they were mainly trying to appeal to those groups.  I don’t have any problem with that. But it seems like those kind of movies and shows are not about anything else anymore. They lack good writing and really only try to shout: “look here! We can be woke as well!”

Yeah it often feels like a very shallow way to make art. I wish studios would just give the Ryan Cooglers and Jordan Peeles of the world some money to realize their projects and get actual, authentic inclusion, not just inclusion for the sake of inclusion. But I guess that's too risky for their business. Though to be fair, people are also calling Sinners woke, so I don't think that crowd can ever be pleased.

Yeah you summed it up perfectly. As a non-native speaker I couldn’t find a way to word it out correctly

Define woke. Also do you have any data to back this statement "certain media being predominantly represented by females, poc, or queer people" or is it just feelings?

I don’t have a definition for that word, that’s why I try not to use it.  I don’t have any data, I tried to make it clear that it’s all just my perception

Sometimes it feels forced, it's hard to explain but I get where it's coming from on occasion I usually find it in adaptations that try to be really faithful in almost every regard from costuming to sets then randomly race or gender swaps a character, which is only ever one way Sometimes it works because it serves a narrative purpose, for a recent example in Fantastic 4: First Steps the decision to make the Silver Surfer female added a good bit to Johnny's character and arc Other times it's just done for the sake of it and changed nothing, in some cases it actively makes something worse, to use another Marvel example, Taskmaster in Black Widow

i get where you're coming from, but it feels like some people just throw around "woke" as a catch-all for anything they don't like. should we just enjoy the story and characters instead of nitpicking demographics?

Its just their way of saying they dislike something...for example:  Green eggs and Ham are woke, i will not have sex with another bloke.  These gay thought keep chasing me, they will never let me be.  Green Eggs and Ham are woke.....well im off to buy enough gay p*** to make me broke.

That’s not really what the word “progression” means

I know a few people that have an anti-woke mindset and any media that changes the race of a pre-established character pisses them off. My uncle didn’t want to watch Wonder Man because he was black unlike in the comics.

The issue started with movies shoehorning these people in with bad writing and making them not interesting. Personally I don’t care who the lead is or who they f***, but the people who are afraid of that focused on the bad movies and gained enough traction to be like. Any movie that has this is inherently ba

I'm sure there are many, but for clarity, can you give an example?

honestly it's so exhausting seeing people call anything with diversity "woke" like maybe they're just telling stories about different kinds of people?? it's 2023 not everything needs to be about straight white guys.
