what on earth is the context behind this scene? why is the young man taking a shower in a house that is obviously not his but while none of the occupants of the house seem to be aware of his presence?

Chevy Chase knows the cops are there. They’re watching his neighbor and he let them stay the night prior but didn’t tell the rest of the family.

It's a really dumb movie; don't overthink it.

If I remember from my very vague memory, theyre cops staking out the house nextdoor and pretend to be a family or something but I may have this confused with a similar movie. I think the home was supposed to be empty.

That's PG.
* No genitals (not even nipples)
* No simulated sex
* No one uses the f-word
* No bloodletting

Bare ass touching gets a pass in the 90s ;)

In the early 90s, yes. But today this would 100% get them a PG-13 rating.

Today that wouldn’t be PG.
People can downvote me all they want. Numerous shots of a grown mans ass would not get a PG rating today. And the director would be accused of stuff on top of it.

Yeah it would. There's nothing in there that the MPA could cite. I've had multiple films rated through the MPA (formerly MPAA) and I know those folks. I've debated profanity and nudity with them dozens of times. This it totally PG.
What has changed is the style of this sort of comedy. The butts seem out of place, the studio wouldn't have it shot/edited this way today. Not because of a rating, but more because of tone. I don't even want to remember the number of nudity meetings I've been in.

This would 100% not pass as PG today.

Can we just agree on PG-13?

That’s the rating it would get today. PG-13.

Yeah and they’d probably add some more swear words just because they’re already in PG-13 category

Easily. I remember as a little kid suddenly being very uncomfortable when watching Airplane! on VHS with my parents and a pair of b**** bounced across the screen for a second. PG rated movie.
Around the same time my parents, older sister or someone in my house had rented a PG movie "The Invisible Kid" and I watched it by myself. Naked women in a locker room. I rewound and rewatched that scene many times.

That was years ago. Like I said. In 2026 it would not get the same rating it received back then.

Sorry but the people claiming this would pass as PG in 2026 must not live in 2026 or live in some European countries. What passed as PG in the 70s into early 90s wouldn't be PG today. The ratings system has completely changed since then as has culture and attitudes.
In fact, the director would have to cut out the ass shots to keep the PG rating today otherwise it would get PG-13.
People are really this unaware of modern culture?
