I feel like doing that would alienate all the bitter weekend dads who stuck with him after it came out that he was cheating on his wife.

JJulie Apr 2, 2026 +85
Only answer^^^. And I say that as a fan that was on the sub. I get rockstar’s cheat, but this one leaned into the nicest rockstar in the business.

BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +50
He also promoted AIDS denialism.  https://youtu.be/9OcP0Op9OsY?is=P51CQ-ccJ-28RGL3 Obviously cheating is also bad. But usually the phrase "responsible for an unknown number of deaths" doesn't need to be included.

miguelmanzana Apr 2, 2026 +12
That was over 20 years ago.
12
Howmanysloths Apr 2, 2026 +35
Yeah the far off time of the early 2000s. Lmfao we all knew how aids worked then he’s just a d***** bag.
35
inedibletrout Apr 2, 2026 +6
God, I hate the f****** Internet. Are you the same person you were 20 years ago? Because, if so, that's a very bad thing. People learn and grow. Their views shift and evolve. For God's sake, I've watched my Bible thumping father lose his faith entirely, write off the whole Republican party, and become fairly leftist in the last 20 years. But no, the other Internet will now NEVER let anyone be any better than the worst version of themselves. No one is allowed to change or grow or become a better person. They are locked in to the worst thing they've said. It's such horse shit.
6
HammerandSickTatBro Apr 2, 2026 +12
Oh so Grohl has come out and said he was wrong about AIDS and worked to redress the harm he abetted?
12
inedibletrout Apr 2, 2026 -1
No, he hasn't publicly apologized. But he has since donated to multiple legitimate AIDS research programs and has been a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. I think his actions show that he has changed and as the age old wisdom says "actions speak louder than words".
-1
HammerandSickTatBro Apr 3, 2026 -4
Sucks he hasn't apologized or publically talked about how he was wrong, but I suppose the many millions of dollars he has will be some kind of comfort when people on the internet whom he doesn't know and won't see criticize him and the rest of the band for it. I'm sorry your dad also has had people be mean to him on the internet. As a trans woman who cannot go back to her home for fear of arrest/lynching, and is unable to travel internationally to see her dying father, I *definitely* think that we should take people being mean to cis men online because of things those men have said and done *much* more seriously
-4
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +8
I dunno man. If the worst thing I ever did came with a significant death toll I would probably consider apologizing and trying to make amends.
8
inedibletrout Apr 2, 2026 -8
In April 2015, President Obama apologized for a January 2015 U.S. drone strike in Pakistan that mistakenly killed two Western hostages. Did he ever apologize for the other 500-800 civilians he killed with drone strikes? Because I can't find a single source that references it. Do I now have to hate Obama and call him a piece of shit too? Because I'm not going to.
-8
HammerandSickTatBro Apr 2, 2026 +13
If you were trying to come up with some kinda "extreme" scenario about disliking celebrities, you probably shouldn't have chosen any u.s. president. The drone-bomber in chief is correctly reviled by a lot of people
13
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 3, 2026 +7
Yeah. Going "but what about the knife missile enthausiast" doesn't sway me.
7
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yes. I believe anyone who commits war crimes and causes mass casualty events is a piece of shit. That is actually a remarkably easy stance to take. I don't think an apology is going to cut it either. I also believe we should hold rockstars who use their power to spread misinformation about a serious medical condition they know nothing about to a different standard than presidents. But for the record, all presidents are bastards. You don't get to be that powerful without doing awful things and making awful choices.
2
Howmanysloths Apr 2, 2026 -6
Dog he cheats on his wife and hates people with aids. The f*** you want from me? If you wanna slob on him he MIGHT f*** you considering how much he hates the thought of f****** his wife.
-6
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +9
And yet they refuse to adress it to this day. Hell of a thing to say about spreading potentially lethal misinformation.
9
According_Wind5536 Apr 2, 2026 +9
It was one thing their bass player did and it was a mistake. Making a big deal about it now would only make it worse
9
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +9
I mean, if the whole band organizes a benefit show for the AIDS denialist charity, plays that show, offers the books for free at the show, uses their website to encourage people to visit the AIDS denialist group for several years, and gift a song to the soundtrack of an AIDS denialist propaganda film, it's something the whole band is involved in.  Edit: thanks for the award u/beardbeak. Great username.
9
According_Wind5536 Apr 2, 2026
And the founders of that org died like 20 years ago. Ancient history. No one is right 100% of the time It was just Nate Mendel anyway. Stop spreading false information, it wasn’t “the whole band” https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2000/02/foo-fighters-hiv-deniers/ Also thankfully since then AIDs medication has come a long way. I don’t think anyone is still following this old bad advice if they are HIV positive
0
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +6
Sure. Mendel played that charity show by himself. The whole concert was just bass. And actually, it isn't ancient history. Alive And Well became so prevalent that they were involved in shaping the HIV/AIDS policy of South Africa. This led to the termination of a program providing free antivirals to pregnant mothers, and free condom programs, resulting in an estimated 330 000 deaths from new infections. Children orphaned by AIDS on a massive scale in South Africa has ramifications to this day. Additionally, I find it really chilling to speak of someone, anyone, who died of preventable causes, and say it was 20 years ago anyway and just old news. And yes, people make mistakes. This was an intense one, since the science on the connection between HIV and AIDS was well established at this point, as were the efficacy of safe sex and HIV tests, and antiviral treatments. But usually people learn from their mistakes, adress them, and try to make amends  Edit: the source you linked actually confirms what I said. >With the other band members on board, Mendel aims to use the Foo Fighters’ celebrity to get the message out to a broad audience. The Foo Fighters plan additional benefit shows, and have placed a banner ad on their Web site linking to Alive and Well >For his part, Mendel remains convinced that the media and the medical establishment are keeping the truth about HIV and AIDS from the public. The Foo Fighters, he insists, will continue to use their celebrity to bring “light to the issue.”

For me, worse than the cheating and the AIDS denialism, was when he strained a drink through his fingers on Hot Ones and expected Sean to drink it, which he did because he’s nice, professional and a huge fan. What a d*****.
1
miguelmanzana Apr 2, 2026 +4
Is he not nice any more?
4
Burbury13 Apr 2, 2026 +31
Do you think he was nice to his wife while he was cheating on her?
31
MudReasonable8185 Apr 2, 2026 +11
I don’t know how their marriage looks but I do know that Dave’s first marriage ended due to him cheating as did the long term relationship he was in between his two marriages. I suspect they had some “don’t ask don’t tell” arrangement that got blown up when he got a 19 y/o pregnant
11
miguelmanzana Apr 2, 2026 +3
No, does that make him not nice forever and ever no take backs?
3
Acceptable-Ad1930 Apr 2, 2026 +34
It’s hard to keep the same respect for someone when you know they are capable of hurting those dearest to them
34
Discerning_Taste Apr 2, 2026
I hate to break this to you, but everyone is capable of, AND will hurt those dearest to them. It’s how living as a human works. The best humans do a good job of rarely hurting others, but eventually everyone humans.
0
CocaColaNepoBaby Apr 2, 2026 +9
It’s actually really easy to not cheat on your partner.
9
Discerning_Taste Apr 2, 2026 -2
Are you aware of how rampant or typical it actually is to have extramarital affairs in marriages? You think that’s because people aren’t really trying to be decent people? Also, I never said cheating, I said hurt, and that comes in many different forms.
-2
CocaColaNepoBaby Apr 3, 2026 +1
lol okay buddy. “Everyone’s doing it, they’re trying their best” I’m not going to have sympathy for a cheater. It’s not that hard to respect your partner and have impulse control. Stop making excuses for shitty, stupid people.
1
daredeviline Apr 2, 2026 -3
Naw. You can go your entire life and never physically hurt those close to you and its weird that you think otherwise
-3
mortavius2525 Apr 2, 2026 +15
They simply said hurt. Meaning both physical and emotional. You put the qualifier of only physical in there.
15
insertUserNamehereno Apr 2, 2026 +7
If you have to add words to someone else’s statement to refute their statement you’re being disingenuous
7
miguelmanzana Apr 2, 2026 +6
To think you’ve never let anyone down must be nice.
6
Double-Scratch5858 Apr 2, 2026 +2

2
ClassiFried86 Apr 2, 2026 +5

5
Scaryassmanbear Apr 3, 2026 +1
Catch 22. It wouldn’t have been nice to the person he cheated with to say no to having sex with them.
1
cubs1917 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Wow! You're so really, really funny
2
RaisinWorried3528 Apr 2, 2026 +4
I'm envious of people who can separate the art from the artist, but whenever I hear Foo Fighters now all I think about is David Grohl being a piece of shit.
4
Ambitious-Visual-315 Apr 2, 2026 +22
Wait til you hear about the chili peppers….
22
BespokeCatastrophe Apr 2, 2026 +4
Yup. I did. And now I hope to never hear about them again.
4
Next-Accident-2970 Apr 3, 2026 +2
As someone who has most of their albums and likes listening to them, even I will admit to stepping away from the band for a long while because of Kiedis and his...preferences.
2
Ambitious-Visual-315 Apr 3, 2026 +2
It’s hard. Their music is amazing and I grew up listening to it but HOLY SHIT
2
Next-Accident-2970 Apr 3, 2026 +3
My second favorite album of all time is Californication. I won't dispute that but DAMMIT ANTHONY.
3
Ambitious-Visual-315 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I wonder sometimes, at what point does “separate the art from the artist” no longer apply….. this feels close
1
Next-Accident-2970 Apr 3, 2026 +3
In case of RHCP, there is a huge taint to it since Kiedis sings about sex a fair share of times.
3
Next-Accident-2970 Apr 2, 2026 +15
Most rock stars are having sex with underage girls, killing innocent people in car accidents and being assholes to everyone.  But a guy who admitted to cheating on his wife and getting help for it is crossing the line? Don't get me wrong, that is wrong to do but you are acting like he admitted to beating his wife
15
GoodPointMan Apr 2, 2026 +37
Meh. This isn’t worth a drop of outrage compared to what’s going on in politics
37
SmokeABowlNoCap Apr 2, 2026 +3
I was unaware that people couldn't be upset about more than one thing at once. Also it takes literally 0 effort to just not listen to somebody's music. We all make our own choices on what stops us from listening
3
Chewurmilk Apr 3, 2026 +1
The post didn't say you couldn't walk and chew bubble gum, but making a big deal out of this seems silly by context. Are you really going to yell at your neighbor for putting his fence on your yard if you're going to be hit by an asteroid in two minutes?
1
SmokeABowlNoCap Apr 3, 2026 +1
I don’t think yelling at your neighbor is a good analogy though. In this metaphor, you wouldn’t even be involved with your neighbor or anyone else. You’d simply be choosing not to have a fence yourself, which is a personal choice you’d be free to make. People are allowed to stop listening to artists for whatever reason they choose. It doesn’t involve anyone else and it shouldn’t be a big deal
1
superspacetrucker Apr 2, 2026 +29
I find it weird how outraged people are about someone else's marital problems. People need to mind their f****** business about things that have no impact on their lives. Sounds like a miserable existence, and you probably should stop listening to music altogether with those standards.
29
TebbaMcPebba Apr 2, 2026 +27
I mean you like him for his music not for being a good husband, also he’s a rocker so as far as bad sex related things go that’s like G rated
27
RaisinWorried3528 Apr 2, 2026 -36
You sound like someone who cheats on their spouse regularly.

6

Every time Courtney Love is brought up everyone just fills the comments saying how terrible a person she is. This never happens to the same extent with male musicians unless what they did was truly heinous like r*** or murder, and even then they have more defenders than Courtney gets. It gets to a point.
162
stopgo Apr 2, 2026 +42
and what has she ever done that was so terrible? People come up with all sorts of ways to blame her for her husband's suicide and yet she's stuck around and raised their daughter. Sure she talks a lot of shit about people and clearly doesn't censor herself or 'act polite' but those traits are often celebrated when it comes to other "rock stars"... and at least a good bit of the shit talking she does is actually just being real - she was calling out Harvey Weinstein for being a predator over 10 years before #MeToo when it very well could have impacted her career.

AggressiveBench9977 Apr 2, 2026 +38

27
greenzetsa Apr 2, 2026 +11
I thought Francis Bean was mostly raised by her grandparents. I don't know, I mostly just find Courtney Love to be super obnoxious and someone who sucks all the air out of any room she's in. People say there's a double standard because she's a woman but there are dozens of women in the punk/riot grrl/grunge space that are a million times more outspoken than she is, do more to promote feminist issues and female artists, and are frankly, just more interesting to listen to as both people and musicians. Meanwhile, she spends her time picking fights with most of them (in some cases physically fighting them). Yeah she spoke out against Weinstein, but so did a bunch of other people. She also feels like someone who completely performs for the male gaze while benefiting off the work of female artists in the same space paving the way for her, who she is often actively hostile to. I think there is a good reason people don't like her.
11
Icy-Builder5892 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Even Frances Bean Cobain has had a few embarassing moments on social media. Like when she said she would "rather die" than live in the shadows of a famous relative. That was kind of an L. But, overall she seems to have turned out okay.
3
daisy0808 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Courtney was abused quite a bit when she was young. Her own father admitted he gave her acid when she was 13 years old, and then kicked her out of the house at 15. She's also autistic, and you can imagine what trying to survive was like. She is abrasive and an addict. If you have spent any kind of time with people under those circumstances, her behavior makes perfect sense. I'm not saying it's justified, nor that she didn't cause negative impacts, but if you examine her life, you'll see why she is the way she is.
3
Icy-Builder5892 Apr 2, 2026 +5
As a person, Courtney Love isn't my cup of tea. Yeah, she's done some pretty dumb things over the years. But she's rarely wrong about people. Also, every few years I go back into a Hole phase and I hear her music very differently at different phases of my life.

She spoke up about Weinstein in 2005 warning women to not go to the four seasons with him if he invites you and got blasted for it. She knew she would get shit for it and she did it anyways. So if nothing else I view her pretty positively after that.

That doesn’t give her a pass. And there are a million who are. I’m not dismissing everything women say I’m dismissing what you’re saying, because it’s abjectly stupid. Your entire argument is she’s a white women dont hold her accountable for her racism

Courtney Love trashed Dave Grohl’s drumming on Nirvana tracks and said he hit on her 19 year old daughter. Don’t know if he hit on the daughter but if he didn’t, that’s a good enough reason to me for him to be a d*** to her. Neither is perfect but she’s straight up garbage.

Right? Cheating on your wife is so tame compared to some of the things other rock stars have done. I still listen to Zeppelin even though I’m well aware of Plant and Page’s predilections. I’d run out of music to listen to if I started dropping bands/artists because of some rotten members doing horrible things.

His entire brand for the past 2 decades has been "the nicest guy in rock". There are countless stories of interactions people have had with him outside of music related events and the annual photos of him cooking BBQ for the homeless. He is one of the most recognizable figures in Rock from his time in his previous band alone. He was also previously one of the most beloved people in the alternative rock community and music in general prior to his cheating coming out. I think it's safe to say his reputation preceded himself before his cheating was public news. No one has to put him on a pedestal since he's rock royalty.
-2
Useful-Soup8161 Apr 2, 2026 +10
Being nice doesn’t mean you’re not cheating on your wife. Both Tom Hanks and Robin Williams have reputations for being really nice and guess what, they cheated on their wives.
10
billb33 Apr 2, 2026 -1
That's not what I was attempting to point out. I was attempting to showcase his accolades and recognition to the casual person. He doesn't need to be put on a pedestal because he's already a solidified figure in pop culture. I'm not even a big fan of his or Foo Fighters. But there's no debating that the guy has carved himself into the history books via his career. I don't think you can put others on a pedestal when they've already cemented themselves in the pop culture zeitgeist.

Okay, I guess my question was “Have they done anything new since killing and eating 50 babies? If so, I haven’t heard about it.” I really just wanted to know if I’d missed some news about them. Some people do new horrible things every couple of days, I was wondering if there was an update. It’s like when someone says something about a certain president and people groan and say “what did he do now?” It’s not that the other things he’s done weren’t bad enough. It’s wanting to know what FRESH hell he’s created.

I get that, but the wording of your post suggests you think that killing people through misinformation is insufficient on its own to warrant the boycott. If someone said "f*** Hitler" nobody would ask "what did he do, aside from the hole holocaust thing. was there anything else?".

I see your point, that wasn’t my intention. I was just trying to stay in the loop and mentioning what I already knew about so that wouldn’t be repeated.

Fair enough.

Ivan Moody abused his ex wife and the cops had to be called for beating her when she confronted him about sleeping with other women.

Sounds like a super guy. Let me guess, not even a slap on the wrist? That’s usually how domestic violence cases go, sadly. What a fucked up system we have.

That would mean 90%+ of rockstars/footballers/NBA players etc. would also lose all there fans which just isn’t gonna happen. I’d rather focus ire on Chris Brown, Steven Tyler, the Eagles guy etc. who’ve done genuinely awful stuff. If there’s a takeaway here it’s that fans shouldn’t think we know celebs on a deep level just cos we like their stuff.

What? Why? I just like singing to Monkey Wrench. I don't give a damn about his relationship status.

In what kind of sheltered/bubble world do you live in that could possibly make you think, a frickin rock and roll star of ppl, doing something like infidelity/ not being faithful to their SO would cause them to lose a significant portion of their fans lol

lol no one really gives a shit about that. He didn’t do anything illegal. What he does or doesn’t do in his private life is between him and his wife

It’s astonishing how you think literally everyone on Earth follows the minutiae of every single celebrity they’ve ever had even the slightest affinity for. This might hurt your simple little brain, but there’s a shit ton of people out there who just listen to the music and never delve into the personal lives of those who perform it. You know, the people who maybe bought a Foo Fighters album when they were a kid so they still get that nostalgia blast when it randomly pops up even though they never go out of their way to play it. Those are a fair chunk of the people who still support “cancelled” celebrities. Not people who hear the news and say “Oh yeah, now THAT sounds like my kinda guy”

My ex absolutely idolized Dave Grohl, and probably still does. Because he would do the same thing, ex can relate to Dave even more now

I don't choose whose music I like based on their personal life. If I never listened to any musicians who cheated on a spouse, I'd probably have a lot less on my playlist.

Once. In the 90s she said the N word on stage. I think there may be video or at least audio. Nothing worth getting bent out of shape over 30 years later; especially when the person in question has demonstrated growth and maturity.
