Craig Ferguson: ‘The head of ITV said that when I got sober, I stopped being funny’
The Scottish stand-up, who spent years as James Corden’s chat show predecessor on US TV, is returning to the UK for two rare live gigs. He speaks to Adam White about moving to America after years of alcoholism, why he’s not joking about politics on his new tour, and why he refused to join the ‘pile-on’ against Britney Spears

I only ever watched sober Craigy Ferg, and he was VERY funny. I miss his show dearly. We watched it all the team in college. It was weird and uplifting and I think there's still a space for that kind of humor now. I would still watch! Moment of silence for the awkward pause.

Hasn’t he been sober forever? He got sober in 1992 and only became really popular in 1994.

I watched Conan all the time in college and he was so good. And THEN after college I watched Craig and I miss him the most. Even over my legendary Conan college days.

Torontogamer Apr 2, 2026 +12
He had a (very different but similar) genuine empathy to him that John steward and only a few other tv show types have, or more so have and actually project

BeefInGR Apr 2, 2026 +29
If I ever won one of those billion dollar Powerball jackpots, I'd give half of it to Craig, Josh (the voice of Geoff Peterson), the old writing staff and the two people inside Secretariat to bring the show back on YouTube. My gift to the world.

He brought that old punk rocker energy to late night. A self-awareness to the ridiculous nature of chat shows, without drowning in irony.

My 95 year old grandmother, in a fit of rage at being told no to something, told me that she liked me better when I was fat. That I was more fun. She also wishes I would drink again. My drinking only caused the loss of someone else’s life - but I was more fuuuuuuunnnnnn!

1
manachar Apr 2, 2026 +3
The older I get and the more of the world I see, the more I realize that most people look at other people as if we exist just for them. We exist to entertain them, to serve them, to cook for them, etc. If we don't "do" anything for them, they would rather we cease existing. They may not wish us ill, but they do wish most people were like the NPCs in a video game. Maybe that is a fine definition of the root of evil. Seeing others as mere tools and resources. We are things for their main character arc. Seeing this, I try to figure out what I can do to make sure I don't fall into that trap. Can't say I'm always successful.
3

Craig Ferguson was some of the best late night I've ever seen. I'd stay up late for Craig Ferguson. Geoff the Skeleton was hilarious. Then there was that random horse James Corden could not hold a candle to him.

Secretariat! Lol.
31
mgcat17 Apr 2, 2026 +12
My favorite was when he’d have Billy Connolly as a guest. The banter was amazing, and eventually the Scottish accents would get so thick that I (from the US) had a hard time understanding, lol.

Craig also pulled off the rare feat of getting a genuine interview out of Richard Ayoade.

He should have gotten Letterman's job. Colbert just isn't that funny if he's not doing political humor.
2
Castrol-5w30 Apr 2, 2026 +8
Agreed. Colbert has only been doing "clapter" (saying mild jokes about Trump that the audience will cheer) for years. The political stuff on the Colbert Report was actually funny. Maximum use of dry wit. I don't know if that show could have survived Trump, but the current Late Show is not great.
8
rumdrums Apr 2, 2026 +4
I remember when he first started Letterman's gig, he was trying to stay away from political humor -- at least relative to his previous role on Comedy Central -- and it was just lame as hell. He got lucky that Trump's rise started basically when he took over the Late Show and he could switch over to nonstop partisan politics. Colbert Report was one of the best shows on TV, but his moving to the Late Show IMO has kinda helped hasten the death of late night talk shows.

Makes me think of what FRIENDS did to the character of fun Bobby. Kinda a messed up thing to say to a real person.
14
JFlizzy84 Apr 2, 2026 +11
Insane thing to say about one of the consistently funniest people on television. Craig Ferguson should have Conan levels of freedom.
11
MattHoppe1 Apr 2, 2026 +8
Heard this conversation Around Kid Cudi when he got sober too. Being alive is more important
8
SweetPuffDaddy Apr 2, 2026 +8
My dad used to work late and I remember staying up until he got home and we’d watch Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show together. Then we also went to one of his standup shows a few years ago. Honestly I’m kind of glad he stopped doing the Late Late Show and went out on a high note instead of continuing until it wasn’t funny anymore. Same with Conan. I don’t find any of the current late night hosts funny because it just feels like they all peaked on their shows years ago and it’s just a steady decline in quality at this point
8
Extra_Passion_5754 Apr 2, 2026 +25
We never watched Mr. Ferguson for his humour, we watched him because every episode is a master-class in flirting.
25
Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 Apr 2, 2026 -23
I avoided watching him specifically because the flirting made him seem like a creep.
-23
Extra_Passion_5754 Apr 2, 2026 +21
He's only a creep if they don't flirt back. And they all flirt back.
21
Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 Apr 2, 2026 -14
That's part of the issue I have. They're there doing press. They have no choice but to flirt back because any other response is going to make for bad press, instead of what they're being paid to do.  As soon as a woman sits down he acts like a letch, and that sets the tone for the entire interview no matter what the guest may or may not have wanted to do.
-14
Extra_Passion_5754 Apr 2, 2026 +9
So I'm not going to say you're wrong. For all I know, you could be exactly correct. That said, I will provide a counter-point, just via sheer volume. It seems impossible to me that every single woman on that show is such a great actress that they're able to act through the discomfort of him being a lecherous geezer, while still looking like they're having a blast, AND flirting back. And the fact we've never heard any scandals come out of the show - "Craig Ferguson was such a creepy b******", for example - especially in the metoo era, also provides evidence in support of my thesis. I think he's just a genuinely likeable guy, the ladies liked his stature and accent, he's a good flirt, and they enjoyed flirting back. [https://youtube.com/shorts/hesebB8W21k?si=HplJ4QTahjDZfJhS](https://youtube.com/shorts/hesebB8W21k?si=HplJ4QTahjDZfJhS) That doesn't look like she's uncomfortable *or* creeped out, to me.
9
Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 Apr 2, 2026 -4
Not *every* woman who appeared on his show needs to be made to feel uncomfortable for his behavior to still be unwarranted.  I'll put it this way, going on the show was a job. If someone at your wife's work acted the way he acted you'd tell your wife to quit, and possibly call a lawyer.  And just because he wasn't caught up in a big scandal doesn't mean people on his show were always comfortable with it.  For me, every time I watched his show it was like watching the creepy uncle leering at his nieces friends at her birthday party. Just entirely off putting.
-4
lexnicotine Apr 2, 2026 +3
That’s utterly ridiculous. His job was to be charismatic and have rapport with his guests and he was incredibly skilled at it. Seems like you just personally don’t like him. It’s not creepy to be playfully flirtatious. I wish he’d flirt with me and I’m a heterosexual male.
3
Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 Apr 2, 2026 +5
Yeah. No. Literally everything I've said has been about me personally not liking him.  I offered my opinion, and the perspective i used with which to come to that opinion.  You don't have to agree at all. I don't expect anybody to.  But you can be charismatic without being the walking embodiment of a Tex Avery wolf whistle.
5
lexnicotine Apr 2, 2026 +2
Well considering that literally every single comment other than yours has had nothing but good things to say to him, I’m inclined to think that you’re just one of those types of people that hate being complimented in any way. When is it appropriate, in your opinion, to flirt with people in a harmless and charming fashion? I’d guess that you’ll say never. Do you think he’s unattractive? Are you that type of person that think flirting is only ok if you find the person physically attractive. He was never once lewd or overly sexual in the way he spoke. That’s just basic human communication to playfully flirt with people. You’re making it sound like you find that abnormal.
2
Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Wow. That's a lot of assumptions you're making about me.  First, I love being complimented.  Second I do think he is generally handsome, so the entire idea that only attractive people are allowed to flirt doesn't carry water with me. When is it appropriate? Depends. In a work setting , pretty much never on the level I've seen him do. But I will say Conan is never anywhere near as offputting to me, even when he's got his flirt factor up to 11. And that's mainly because with him there's a call and response. Usually the guest says something first, and then Conan responds, and usually in an entirely over the top way making it clear he's not genuinely objectifying the woman sitting next to him, it's a joke.  But you're not going to tell me Ferguson pointedly eye f****** his guests while keeping the conversation sexually charged and making any excuse to touch them is the same as what Conan partakes in.  Again. It's fine to agree to disagree. I don't expect fans of his to judge him on the level I do.
3
No_Use_9652 Apr 2, 2026 +16
The man infamous for flirting without being a creep. It was like his entire thing lol. This is so obviously just a parroted comment you’ve seen about Leno or Letterman.

5
brumac44 Apr 2, 2026 +5
I miss him. I think he's wrong about late night though, I don't think he could've been as subversive on earlier shows. I love him on that Scotland trip he did, I wish he'd do a series type travel show.
5
BeefInGR Apr 2, 2026 +3
He had a clause in what was his final contract with CBS, a "Prince of Scotland" clause if you will, that he was the successor to Letterman. And Dave wanted it. He got a chunk of change to let Colbert host.

DefinitionSuperb1110 Apr 3, 2026 +2

A BBC2 Mary Whitehouse Show type of thing. A few episodes and then he disappeared. Like yourself I was then surprised to find out he was a big star in america a few years later.

AdorableEmu5386 Apr 2, 2026 +1
I loved The Mary Whitehouse Experience (?) at the time, have never rewatched though. I've managed to find one episode of The Ferguson Theory on Youtube. I've pinned it to watch later, and look for more. That's a shame it was a few episodes though. Watched him at the Pavilion in the 80's , you can watch it on YouTube. His sister Lynn also did a bit of stand up but it just seemed like a female version of his routine.

It happens. Comedy comes from the pain we try to drown in booze and drugs. Start fixing the pain, stop being funny.
1
SwingKey3599 Apr 2, 2026 +1
this is the talk of someone that hasnt completely recovered but achieved functional sobriety. and thats ok, but i explained this to someone else the other day-just because you were creating the most and experiencing the peak of your creative output during your drinking or drugging years does not mean the drink or the drugs contributed significantly to either. they were there at the same time and outside of specific instances usually have little to do with eachother.

I can remember him having a show in the early 90s. It might have been just in Scotland as he did a spoof on Sydney Devine. It was ok but i dont his style of comedy would work aswell on UK audiences compared to US ones and he really found his home in the US.

Disagree. Craig is still the funniest and charismatic talk show host around. I'd really like to see him host the Oscars to liven that up as a sort of elder talk show alumni.
