For anyone interested: Bart Layton, the director of **Crime 101**, recently joined us here in /r/movies for an AMA/Q&A: https://www.listnook.com/r/movies/comments/1r82j57/hey_rmovies_im_bart_layton_ive_directed_crime_101/

So how is it? I read that many people who enjoyed the novella didn’t quite like it. Those who didn’t know it was a short story and watched the movie first actually enjoyed more. Edit: thank you for the feedback. I’m going to check it out even though I have Ruffalo fatigue

It's enjoyable. About as cliche as it looks, but it subverts a trope here and there. Don't watch the trailers before going in, as one kinda spoils a big moment.

Latter camp. Loved it. Hemsworth is f****** *brilliant* when given a gem of a script.

I think it's actually the best performance he's ever given.

He’s good here but in my opinion it’ll be hard for him to ever top his villain in Furiosa

Oh that's the other one on the top of the list for sure and I would never fault someone for preferring it. That's just a very showy performance and Crime 101 is a very internal performance which is something I haven't seen from him to this level before. Both excellent in different ways.

The nose really played for me. It wasn't just a prop for prop's sake. In a way, it was kind of perversely dignifiying.

How's it going, Linus?

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt like a throwback/homage to action/thriller movies like Heat. Nothing groundbreaking but was a lot of fun.

I hadn’t read the book but enjoyed the film. Thought its story suffered from stuffing too many main character arcs. But overall it was fun and worth the watch, even more so with it being free streaming

Very fun, enjoyable throwback to 90s crime movies even though it’s not reinventing the wheel or anything. The romantic subplot was extremely weak though and I don’t know why it was in the movie

Saw in theaters, had no idea it was an adaptation until your comment. Thought is was pretty solid, not a fan of the muted color palette but good performances from Ruffalo, Keoghan, and Berry. Idk about the original short story, but I felt like Hemsworth's character was this borderline autistic, obsessive compulsive, socially awkward loner on his dates with Maya or with the prostitute, but then he is able to effortlessly rizz Halle Berry. It was definitely a little weird seeing the go who plays Thor so lacking in charisma for most of the movie, but then appear relatively normal at other times. Ruffalo's turn to letting Hemsworth character get away at the end also felt a little unearned. Action scenes were good, Keoghan's character was exciting and fun to watch anytime he was on screen.

I don't think autistic is the right angle, because he was incredibly adept at manipulating people. It's when he had to be real and vulnerable and open that he struggled.

My uncle who is always disappointed when we go to to the movies, liked it a lot. Heat is one of his favories. Some similarities. I thought it was decent

It felt like it wanted to be a Steve McQueen movie. (The actor. Not the director.) They even name dropped him. But as much as I like Hemsworth, he's no McQueen.

I never read the story. I really enjoyed seeing this movie in the theater. It has a couple good intense scenes, good cast, good performances. I feel like this kind of movie has been forgotten by Hollywood (or perhaps by audiences) recently, so it was nice to have it back.

I enjoyed it. After I saw it, I heard someone say it was too long to be a 90 minute sprint of a heist thriller but it was too short to be a 3 hour long LA epic. Which kind of neatly sums it up I think.

It's fun enough and not some dumbed down Red Notice type shite. But it lacks some grit that its influences had, and while Hemsworth looks great onscreen I didn't really buy him in the role. But if you like crime movies with a human element this is absolutely one to give a watch.

I liked it! It’s a modern version of Heat. One of my favorites of the year

it was c*** and should gave gone direct to prime video, but i’m pretty sure the cast must have had contractual obligations for a theatrical run.

Potore5 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Yours is the first negative take on the movie…what didn’t you like?
2
i_hate_ketchup777 Mar 30, 2026 +1
it was a poorly written by the numbers cliché with a happy ending you’ll see coming a mile away. if you’ve ever seen a film about a super carful criminal with a heart of gold who slips up, you’ve seen this movie.it doesn’t require your full attention (like most modern direct to streaming films), and i am not very thrilled to see this creep into theatrical releases. the dialog was groan-worthy in places. at least it’ll be free with your prime subscription?

Potore5 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I appreciate your honesty and taking time to sum it up. Yeah I guess I’m lucky that I’ll watch this with a subscription instead of paying for it solo at the movies.

I really dug this one. Saw it pretty blind in theaters, and it was solid through and through. Very Michael Mann-esque.

This movie is well worth a watch despite the basic ass title. Great IMAX experience, especially the opening scene.

Wow that’s quick

~45 days, right? Same day VOD? My guess is, unless an Amazon MGM film overperforms (*cough* Project Hail Mary *cough*), that will be their policy going forward. (Or if it tanks like *Mercy*, at which point it will be rushed to the service ASAP to make back something.)

It has been leaked with actual quality for a long time now.

I quite enjoyed this one. I think I really like Chris Hemsworth as an actor. His character here was intentionally lacking in personality and emotionally cold, but I still found myself feeling sympathetic towards him. Something about his presence that feels natural and magnetic to me even when he's not doing much.

Pizzaheadeddead Mar 31, 2026 +1
I just don't think Chris Hemsworth is good nuanced to acting. I don't know if it was the script but I thought he was really poor. The relationship with his girlfriend was laughable, as well as that so-called connection between him and Mark Ruffalo at the end.

Finally! I told my parents for weeks to check this movie out thinking it was streaming already (they aren't big fans of going to the theater since its so far from them), and they finally wanted to go check it out yesterday but it wasn't on streaming yet I was so embarassed :D That being said I really enjoyed this one, after having confusing it for another movie (sentimental value, long story lol) and think it absolutely deserved its long theater run.

What's a disappointment. It's everything that I should love but the plot just wasn't there. It's almost felt like they kept changing the screenplay through production. There's a scene at the very start of the film involving a safe in a mansion that teases something later on in the film, that never happens. I hundred percent think the climax was scrapped and re-filmed. I think the biggest disappointment for me was Chris Hemsworth. He goes for that Ryan Gosling Drive character but fails miserably. She just has such little screen presents, which is surprising because I've loved him in other stuff like Extraction. I just don't think he can do nuance acting - someone like Ryan Gosling, Eddie Redmayne or Casey Affleck would've been much better and believable in this role. For a 2 1/2 hour long film, nothing really happens. There's no dread, there's no tension, which you'd expect in a heist thriller and the relationships between characters feel paper thin. Honestly, I wouldn't waste your time with this.

I saw the movie.. enjoyed it ok. Can somebody explain the name?
1
girafa Mar 30, 2026 +5
101 is a highway in LA that the character constantly used as his getaway route when he'd execute a heist. 101 is also the typical name for a beginning college course. "Spanish 101" would be the first Spanish class of a program. So Crime 101 is both a bit of "lessons in how to do crime" and "crime happening around interstate 101"

Thank you. I was only connecting the educational connection which i thought was kinda weak. When you reminded me that it was all based around the 101 freeway i did a forehead slap.

This was such a disappointment, It wanted to be Heat meets Drive but was slow and drawn out with bad characters.

It was decent. Not sure its worth a rewatch; maybe if it had been 20-30 minutes shorter.
