Curiosity killed the cat

Posted by Fyre-Bringer

[https://imgur.com/a/HwXi4Cw](https://imgur.com/a/HwXi4Cw) I was out of milk for mac n cheese, so I used sour cream instead. Then I thought, "While I'm waiting, I might as well premix the cheese powder with the sour cream." Imagine the look of horror on my face at the resulting orange foam. I have yet to determine whether the Mac n cheese will taste good with sour cream instead of milk. But I have determined that I accidentally made homemade cheese whiz. Edit: It is incredibly weird to stir orange foam into noodles. Do not recommend. Edit 2: I added the second packet (picture is 1 packet + 1/2c sour cream) and it turned globby. Ranch has been added to try and fix this. I've been cooking since I was eight, and \*now\* I'm having problems with mac n cheese from a box? Edit 3: Satisfaction has not brought the cat back. The cat is dead. The mac n cheese now tastes like normal mac n cheese except it's slightly sour from the sour cream, and I now know how to make cheese whiz which I'll likely never use. The end result is not bad, but there is very little satisfaction.

My kid once tried using hazelnut creamer because we were out of milk. I'd say you did better than that.

Oof I had a period where my roommates convinced me to start using soy/rice/almond milk as a healthier alternative and I'll say, every attempt at boxed Mac and cheese was ridiculously sweet and had weird flavors I couldn't describe. I'm guessing it was similar to your kid's creamer snafu but theirs sounds horrendous. 🤣 These days, I'm team whole milk. I don't drink it and pretty much only need it in small amounts for certain recipes. It's worth going all in.

It wasn't even actual nut milk, it was sugar free, Walmart brand creamer.

I had a friend who would only drink soy milk. Once I was out of regular milk so I had to use his to make mac and cheese. I didn't check it beforehand, turns out it was vanilla flavored. The macaroni was inedible lol. These days I don't even use milk. I just use butter. I like the flavor better.

Occasionally I like throwing in a couple big spoonfuls of salsa instead of milk. Gives things a kick and adds texture.

🤮 that’s almost as bad as using vanilla creamer 🤣

Lesson learned the hard way. I wasn't home.

If you are ever in this situation again dilute the sour cream and find something to help reduce the tartness. Sugar or honey will do.

Sour cream actually makes Mac and cheese creamier than milk does, happy accident!

Unfortunately, I greatly dislike sourness. Usually sour cream is fine for me if it's an ingredient. If I could send you the leftovers, I would.

water works when making box mac n cheese.

This guy gets it. This is all I do, OP. Just... Add some water in lieu of milk. Or just add more butter, lol.

Leave a little of the pasta water in the pot.

This ☝️ Undercook the pasta, leave extra water in the pot, and cook down the extra water. Turns out just as creamy as box directions.

You should of made a milk out of the Sour cream first Lol...😏 But sounds interesting to me. There are a zillion different Mac and cheese recipes. I'm sure you not the first that made a Sour cream Mac and cheese. My Sister does one with her special ingredient of blue cheese...like small amounts not excess amount..then I think she also mixed with mozzarella and cheddar

I've never heard of making milk out of sour cream.

Yeah. Wouldn't that be kind of like putting a genie back in the bottle?

I'm pretty sure they meant diluting the sour cream with water. I would've just put a big dollop into a bowl, then whisked in water a little at a time until it's the same amount of milk needed.

I often use either yogurt or sour cream in Mac n cheese instead of milk because I rarely have milk. Sour cream is really good but I usually get the cheese melted before I add the sour cream using a little water. Adding the ranch is an interesting choice 🤣

I'd only added one cheese packet to the sour cream because upon mixing it I was like, "What have I done?"  And then when I added the second when mixing with the noodles, It turned globby.  So my brain was going, I need dairy, butter is just going to add grease. I have ranch and mayonnaise . . . Oh, and Google says that people usually add ranch packets for flavor instead of liquid ranch since it thins out the sauce, which is EXACTLY what I need!

Idk if this helps but I've made Mac and cheese with butter and beer before. It makes a nice beer cheese flavor

Heavy cream works very well, just use less than milk.

It sounds like it would be good.

I never use milk. I use yogurt, kefir, or Irish cream if I'm feeling spicy.

I've always used extra butter but it's not good that way 🤣🤣🤣

Cream cheese would work. I use it to make cheese sauce all the time. You could melt it down in a saucepan and stir in the cheese.

To me, schmaltz instead of butter really elevates basic mac n cheese

I've successfully made a good spaghetti sauce out of tomato soup before. I'm just not on my A game today lol.

the orange foam is your brain telling you that you've discovered something that should stay undiscovered, and you should probably listen to it next time

Homemade cheese whiz.

Double the butter and add a little water. No need for milk or sour cream.

Once when I was like 12, I started making mac n cheese while my parents were out of town. After starting, I realized we had neither milk nor butter. I thought almond milk and olive oil would be suitable substitutes. They were not.

I made it once with no milk, just butter and cheese powder. Fantastic! The milk must really tamp down the cheese flavor, because with no milk it’s the cheesiest thing I’ve ever had.

I've heard that one before, but I'm pretty sure it's actually "cure" not "curiosity". Is that right?

The phrase is, "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back."
