From what I've read, people who share this kind of material do it in large file dumps because of all the risk around it. They don't want to increase the risk by doing a lot of small file shares.
So yes, this is an insane and horrific amount of data, but I think it's fairly typical for these scumbags.

It’s some kind of hoarding mentality, I know someone who worked sex crimes back in the pre internet days and he said it the amount of kiddie p*** always fell into: none and an absolutely insane amount. Like finding people with thousand of VHS tapes of it.

Specifically the risk of getting caught in the act of file sharing. Like how it's riskier to buy a small amount of drugs on the street than it is to store a kilo in a safe at your house.

I found [this tool](https://steamcalculator.org/library-size) which can scan your Steam library and tell you how big it should be.
Keep in mind that it doesn't have data for everything so it does a lot of guessing based on averages but it estimated that my Steam library of ~2200 games would take up just over 29TB.

Unrelated to the murder, they can always file the charges later and amend the indictment or pursue him after he’s done with this trial.
Murder is the domain of Robbery and homicide division of LAPD. Juvenile Division detectives do sex crimes involving children. They likely are doing their own investigation separate from the murder now.

High profile means he’s going into protective custody. A life sentence (which is what he’ll get, California has a moratorium on the death penalty) means he’ll be in the highest security prison, and likely in a SHU. He will spend 23.5 hours of his life in a one man cell and get 30 minutes a day to walk around something that looks like a squash court alone.

The 40TB of evidence is the full collection of data from discovery. It'll include everything from every owned laptop, desktop pc (he was a game streamer so probably a good chunk of volume there), phones, Tesla data, and even friends phones/computers.
Since the DA didn't pursue any CSAM charges, I have to assume it's probably of Celeste.
That being said, I don't think the DA has a slam-dunk case. It's taken 8+ months to bring charges, and they still haven't released evidence to the defense. If I had to guess they don't have very solid "glue" to stick the murder charge on him. Should be interesting to watch this case play out.
