I've worked in this industry in the past. People in high places will find anything to use against you.

Mmmhmmm, I feel like this is true for any industry that has human interaction at it's core.

Hate to tell you, but that applies to every job industry

> “I had an audition once, and it was a callback, and I went into the room, and I shook everyone’s hand and introduced myself. Then I did the scene, and I left,” Johnson said. “The feedback I got was that because I had gone and introduced myself and shook everyone’s hand is that I was pompous. That I was schmoozing, and I was full of myself, and I was like: ‘What?’ I didn’t get the job because they said that I was being cocky, but I just had manners… It was pretty crazy.”

Could easily see losing an audition because you didn’t shake anyone’s hand—you were cold, distant, and snobby.

You need to shake hands with the right amount of people. 😬

The specific “don’t shake his hand” guy, too. You have to guess which one has the secret card when you walk in the room.

That's why I carry bolt cutters everywhere. Escape Rooms hate me for this one simple trick.

lol Ludwig and Michael reeves(YouTubers) are doing a no maps, no translator trip on motorcycles across China. The other day they accidentally wandered into a Chinese escape room and ended up unplugging all the door locks to escape.
4
Deezul_AwT Mar 30, 2026 +7
Slightly off tangent, but at the beginning of the first Will Smith/Martin Lawrence "Bad Boys" movie, the guys breaking into the evidence locker and freeze the locks with liquid nitrogen. Then hit them with bolt cutters. Why not just use the bolt cutters to cut the locks instead of adding the extra step?
7
Ok_Kick4871 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Or shake everyone's hand, but start coughing halfway through so they short circuit the judgements and just focus on the spectacle of someone continuing to shake hands during a coughing fit.

I work in business and telecommunications so that’s where my experience lies but I notice both men and women seem quicker to judge women off these kinds of things. A woman has a backbone she’s bitchy and uncompromising. She has plans she’s cold and calculating. She’s quiet and reserved, again she’s bitchy and hostile.
106
BreakfastPizzaStudio Mar 30, 2026 +43
I think this is probably right, even in 2026. Boggles the f****** mind. Can’t a woman just be a human being?
43
Blue_Oyster_Cat Mar 30, 2026 +26
Well isn't that just the f****** question. Having watched the recent documentary about the tens of thousands of men who are meeting online to discuss drugging and raping their wives and partners, and sharing photographs and video, I am so done with men right now. Yes, not all men, but always men.

Dating apps - You should leave one or two sentences about one photo. Nothing more until you get a response. Also, you should leave two paragraphs about a shared hobby. To show you can converse more than one or two sentences.

When people point out "privilege" (in this case male privilege) that's exactly what they mean. Men don't get any extra points, they just don't automatically have a bias stacked against them.

I would be complex I would be cool They'd say I played the field before I found someone to commit to And that would be okay For me to do Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you I'd be a fearless leader I'd be an alpha type When everyone believes ya What's that like? I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man And I'm so sick of them coming at me again 'Cause if I was a man Then I'd be the man I'd be the man I'd be the man They'd say I hustled Put in the work They wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve What I was wearing If I was rude Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves? And they would toast to me, oh Let the players play I'd be just like Leo In Saint-Tropez I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man And I'm so sick of them coming at me again 'Cause if I was a man Then I'd be the man I'd be the man I'd be the man What's it like to brag about Raking in dollars And getting bitches and models And it's all good if you're bad And it's okay if you're mad If I was out flashing my dollars I'd be a b****, not a baller They paint me out to be bad So it's okay that I'm mad I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man (you know that) And I'm so sick of them coming at me again (coming at me again) 'Cause if I was a man (if I was a man) Then I'd be the man (then I'd be the man) I'm so sick of running as fast as I can (as fast as I can) Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man (hey) And I'm so sick of them coming at me again (coming at me again) 'Cause if I was a man (if I was a man) Then I'd be the man I'd be the man I'd be the man (oh) I'd be the man (yeah) I'd be the man (I'd be the man) If I was a man Then I'd be the man Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Taylor Swift / Joel Little

Ever see those YouTube videos of police interrogations and they have a body language expert watch it? Suspect is clearly guilty because they’re being quiet and guilty people stay tight-lipped. Suspect is clearly guilty because they’re really chatty and guilty people won’t stay quiet. Suspect is guilty because they’re fidgety and look nervous. Suspect is guilty because they’re sitting still and look calm. No matter what the person does if they think they’re guilty then that’s what guilty people do. People will shoehorn your behavior as proof to confirm their already existing opinions about you.
51
A1sauc3d Mar 30, 2026 +7
Hey, that’s what the police pay the “body language” “”experts”” for, to say the perp is guilty lol. Not to expertly assess body language (which is at best psuedo science and pointless for things like determining guilt. Being nervous doesn’t mean you’re guilty. Same reason lie detectors are bunk. Far too many ways to pass if you’re lying and fail if you’re telling the truth. It just tell you how relaxed someone is. Not how truthful their statements are)
7
duaneap Mar 30, 2026 +11
I can also see you losing or winning a role because you’re Don Johnson’s daughter. I have to imagine that’s just omnipresent in any audition room she’s in.

Yeah. Dakota’s a strange case though because she’s not at all an impressive (or even capable??) actress, but she seems like such a great and funny person.

5
popcapdogeater Mar 30, 2026 +10
I mean this is just how things are going to be, and ultimately you gotta look at it as a win because you obviously weren't a good "fit" with the team. People are just too different, and that isn't a bad thing, just sucks when you're finding where you can best fit in.

Sounds like good manners but I can say I have experienced a person who did almost this exact thing at my job. They did end up getting the job but even I felt like they were just doing the most. I think it's one of those nuanced human things that can show certain people that you may be overly confident. It is intimidating to be so confident. Im not saying it's a make or break thing but it is SOMETHING. Nerves of some sort are sometimes more human than outright confidence. Also I'm just one guy. Im sure some people really like people who exude confidence at all times. I think it's unnatural

How many were in the room? 3 or 35?
502
Sphiffi Mar 30, 2026 +495
208 people. It took 30 minutes.
495
grundee Mar 30, 2026 +65
It would have been faster if she hadn't insisted everyone shake everyone else's hand exactly once as well. Now how many total handshakes would that be?
65
Sphiffi Mar 30, 2026 +26
I also thought it was weird she insisted to everyone she shake both of their hands individually.
26
grundee Mar 30, 2026 +12
Technically there are 4 possible handshakes between each person. Left to left, right to right, one person twists their right arm and shakes the left hand, one person twists their left arm and shakes the right hand. You can have 6 total if you swap off on who twists their arm, you can have a 7th and 8th if you shake both hands at the same time and swap off on arm twisting, and a 9th time if you shake both hands simultaneously cross armed. So Dakota and the other 208 people in the room need to individually do this process with each other before she would agree to leave. How many total hand interactions are there in the room?
12
Sphiffi Mar 30, 2026 +12
And this thread refuses to call her pompous.

Essential information actually. Though I do wonder where the line is. I feel like over 5 is too much.
42
King_SalineIV Mar 30, 2026 +44
Sounds like something that could be in an episode of curb. Larry defending why he didn’t shake hands with someone. “There were five people! That’s over the cutoff. What if there were 200 people? I’ve got to shake hands with all of them? Of course not! So where’s the line? I say it’s 4!”

19
kdj00940 Mar 30, 2026 +14
I feel like sometimes, casting directors and their teams are the most insecure, bored people in the room at any given time. Someone introducing themselves isn’t pompous, it’s kind. It’s just that most people don’t do that because they have nerves, or it’d be too awkward, or they hadn’t thought to before. Just because Dakota was maybe one of the few people to ever do that doesn’t make her rude. How insane. Casting directors are great. Don’t get me wrong. But they’re also some of the most shallow, closed-minded people on the planet.

12
Numerous_Custard_349 Mar 30, 2026 +62
Eeeehhhh idk typically auditions are very sterile environments and can feel cold/uncaring but it’s more that actors are usually one of the last, smaller pieces of the puzzle. Those auditors probably saw 100 people that day and you can imagine shaking everyone’s hand, doing small talk all for a 30 second take on camera is wildly unnecessary. There’s a lot of jokes about how awful auditions feel because the actors experience is very vulnerable and the casting is picking through the litter. It isn’t the best but I think Dakotas intentions came off as superficial because everyone probably knew her and what she needed to do. It’s often better to nail the audition as it stands than try and do anything extra. Auditioning is also remarkably fickle and it kind of comes across that she doesn’t have much experience with it if this incident bothers her. I knew an amazing actress who auditioned for a broadway play over a dozen times and kept getting rejected because she was a Virgo and the company’s astrologist said her energy didnt align lol
62
Fruit_Paradise Mar 30, 2026 +14
Damn shoulda lied about her birthday

6

Would a male actor been given the same treatment? Probably not. Women actresses get such a shitty rap for just being themselves.
52

Absolutely he would. There are so many horror stories about casting and auditions from actors of all genders, ages, and everything else. Literally no group is immune.

I'm sure she's a nice enough person but her acting skills are on par with a can of paint.

She's good in The Lost Daughter. Imo she just needs to pick better scripts after that Spiderweb thing
34
yeahright17 Mar 30, 2026 +10
She's good in most things. She did a money grab script (Madame Web) in the middle of doing a bunch of good smaller films where she is pretty good. Suspiria, Peanut Butter Falcon, Lost Daughter, Cha Cha Real Smooth, Daddio, Am I OK?, Materialists and Splitsville are all varying levels of good.

That's crazy. I've never heard of any of those movies. Any you recommended first?

44
Medic1642 Mar 30, 2026 +3
How do you get invited to that sort of party?
3

I work in the industry. These parties aren’t as cool as you think they are. I stopped going a long time ago not my scene.

Imo the only thing she's got going for her was the take down of ellen.
8
Blackcatmustache Mar 30, 2026 +3
I had forgotten all about that! And I never knew this part, “To twist the knife even deeper, Johnson referred to Tig Notaro as her ‘favorite comedian’ while recapping her surprise stand-up performance at said party. DeGeneres’ face went blank once again, and Johnson playfully showed herself off the stage.” https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/remember-the-awkward-ellen-interview-that-made-dakota-johnson-a-meme/

baronvonpennytree Mar 30, 2026 +4
She should have bro hugged every one of them.
4
jr_randolph Mar 30, 2026 +4
I'm leaning towards the casting people didn't want to hire her not based on her audition but her name...if that's the reason they have about her shaking hands lol. Unless she came in like Chet Hanks with the bomboclatt business haha
4
Jackson849 Mar 31, 2026 +3
And she should make sure she still does this in the future. It’s called being polite and friendly. Idiots.
3

I’m not into her as an actor but as a person she seems chill as hell. I dig her vibe.
3
shiftyeyedgoat Mar 30, 2026 +27
It might be because she’s not a good actress.

“she was shaking hands with the poor. Fire her”
3
Nada_Bot Mar 31, 2026 +3
How was she doing it though? Maybe her polite demeanor came off as cocky and schmoozy - maybe she had too much coffee or something.
3
neeesus Mar 31, 2026 +3
This doesn’t sound like a reason to slam her. Her bad acting is though.
3
Jack_Q_Frost_Jr Mar 30, 2026 +40
I've been on plenty of auditions, and it's never once crossed my mind to shake hands with everyone in the room. That's not what you do at auditions. And though actors will need to say their names when they do a slate for the camera, there's no need to introduce themselves to everyone there. The people in the room already know who they are.
40
thorn_95 Mar 30, 2026 +93
ok but if someone *did* i wouldn’t think they were being snobby or anything lol. i’d just think they were being nice.
93
thiswasmysixthchoice Mar 30, 2026 +23
I can imagine how Dakota Johnson, specifically, could come off snobby doing that.
23
sepam Mar 30, 2026 +15
I know nothing of this specific process, but if it’s standard practice to not do personal introductions and a candidate has enough experience that they should know this, then I would view it as a negative. Not because it’s cocky, but more like “Why does this experienced person not know the generally accepted practices of this industry? Are we missing something?” It might prompt additional discussions but it should not disqualify someone.
15
cmere-2-me Mar 30, 2026 +5
They may see it as wasting their time. She doesn't specify when this was. During covid? I'd be really f****** annoyed with some clueless "actress" evading everyones space during that time.
5
knx815 Mar 30, 2026 +4
I assume this was pre-Covid.  She already established herself with the 50 shades franchise, she probably didn’t have to audition anymore and just had do screen tests by then
4
MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 30, 2026 +9
I highly doubt 50 shades got her to offer only
9
knx815 Mar 30, 2026 +2
She was terrible in it but they were hits.  It made her an established name.  Screen tests does not mean offer only, it means she’s going up against 2-3 other established names
2
MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 30, 2026 +5
Plenty of people are in hits that still have to audition. Pattinson was in the original version that was way bigger and still auditioning.

Post-Twilight, Pattinson was also doing screen tests 9/10 times.  Yes there are exceptions to the rule, a director like James Cameron will often require even established names to audition but that is not the norm.  These auditions are usually less formal, they’re not auditioning in front of 20 casting agents which is what Johnson is referring to

For all we know you’re a high school theater kid talking about your shrek the musical audition with the choir teacher

Jack_Q_Frost_Jr Mar 30, 2026 +1
Thanks, but I wouldn't have compared myself to her film auditions if I hadn't also been on film auditions myself. I've auditioned for roles in film and television for decades.

SaveHogwarts Mar 30, 2026 +2
You make threads on Listnook about your “least favorite Star Trek p***” and frozen dinners. I don’t think anyone should be taking advice from you.
2
Jack_Q_Frost_Jr Mar 30, 2026 +6
I'm not giving anybody advice. The fact that I eat dinner doesn't invalidate my observations.

Luci-Noir Mar 30, 2026 +4
And you’re doing research on them. You’re really not any better.

Dakota Johnson is one of the most flat actors who keeps landing gigs and I don't understand it. Also I've seen interviews where she's so out of touch with life of regular people it wouldn't surprise me if she's blind to how she comes off.

No_reply_GHoster Mar 30, 2026 +5
I've always thought that when it comes to shaking someone's hand you wait until they offer to shake yours. "They" meaning the people or person you need something from which in this case the part she's auditioning for. I'm not going to start shaking everyone's hand at a job interview unless they offer to shake mine.

It’s a common practice with the intention to show confidence and outgoingness. Is it cringe? Sure. But it’s not something that should be held against anyone
21
thurein_wai Mar 30, 2026 +32
It’s not cringe to shake hands with everyone in the room. She was being polite but for some odd reason, they took it the wrong way.
32
Massive-Device-1200 Mar 30, 2026 +16
Certainly not cringe. To show everyone in the room respect and to know their names.
16
SilverCompetitive902 Mar 30, 2026 +3
I dont think its cringe either, but im probably autistic sp who knows
3
Rowan1980 Mar 30, 2026 +9
It’s not “cringe” in the slightest.
9
Handitry_Banditry Mar 30, 2026 +3
I think it depends on if there were 3 people or 20 she shook hands with.
3
BigTuna0890 Mar 30, 2026 +6
It’s also gratitude for the opportunity
6
SenorHavinTrouble Mar 30, 2026 +3
Dakota Johnson claims that Dakota Johnson failed an audition for bullshit reasons totally unrelated to her amazing acting ability
3
tigolbing Mar 30, 2026 +2
Basically felt she was trying too hard
2
abhig535 Mar 30, 2026 +3
I'm shocked it wasn't for her acting
3
Lostallthefucksigive Mar 30, 2026 +3
God I love her so much lol that’s crazy
3
hilandhall Mar 30, 2026 +4
Or else maybe she’s just not that good of an actress?
4
source-commonsense Mar 30, 2026 +20
then they could have given her that feedback, but this is what she was directly told about why she didn't book it
20
weisp Mar 30, 2026 +2
Someone better got the role There are so many better actresses than her
2
BigMack6911 Mar 30, 2026 +2
That's why I only shake my own hand
2
Piglet-Witty Mar 30, 2026 -1
Can we make shaking hands illegal
-1
Food_Tastes_Good Mar 30, 2026 +12
The monkey's paw curls and now it is legally mandatory to kiss every person you meet. On the lips. Mouths slightly open so the lips interlock for a minimum of 3 seconds.
12
WarOtter Mar 30, 2026 +6
Nope, new greeting is you stick your index finger in the other person's mouth and each of you suckle just a little to show you trust them.
6
The_Sleep Mar 30, 2026 +3
But I'm already under court orders to stop doing that.
3
have-u-met-teds-mom Mar 30, 2026 +3
Uh, that’s not my mouth, sir

HaloFever117 Mar 30, 2026 +1
There should an entire news story about every audition.
1
SassyMoron Mar 30, 2026 +1
Her career seems to have worked out pretty well in the end
1
travis147 Mar 30, 2026 +1
She would fit in backstage at WWE
1
blinkysmurf Mar 30, 2026 +1
I don’t understand. Why would they care if she was schmoozing or not? Don’t they want the best person for the part, irrespective of anything else? Or, do they factor in how difficult they might be to work with?
1
bluehawk232 Mar 30, 2026 +1
But don't they want to hear about her mother studying spiders in the amazon rainforest
1
hashtaglurking Mar 30, 2026 +1
Look at her now. She gettin' paperrrr!
1
SuccessfulOwl Mar 30, 2026 +1
She comes across as pompous and cocky as standard. It wasn’t a once off at the audition.
1
tophman2 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Maybe she just did a sh!t audition and had nothing to do with the handshaking
1
megapillowcase Mar 30, 2026 +1
Does this surprise anyone? No. She dodged a bullet imo.
1
rhetoricalcriticism Mar 31, 2026 +1
Should’ve just shown the Calvin Klein ad
1
Gloomy_Industry8841 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Women can’t win.
1
SuggestionOrnery6938 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Wow. Could it be shes polite in this instance?
1
Devilofchaos108070 Mar 31, 2026 +1
She’s a terrible actress but yeah this is dumb
1
Fun_Midnight7446 Mar 31, 2026 +1
To be fair, she may have failed the audition because she’s a terrible actress without range, but that was too mean so they just went with the nearest thing.
1
ghee Mar 31, 2026 +1
Maybe she was being pompous and cocky and shook hands as well.
1
Several_Direction599 Mar 31, 2026 +1
It’s because she attempted a Lebron style handshake with each of them
1
Repulsive_Job428 Mar 31, 2026 +1
They could have just used her lack of acting ability. If flat pop were a performer, it would be her
