Great choice for opposites.

Would love to see Craig in more villain roles. He was so good in road to perdition

If he can be a mix of his personality from that with a little inspiration from JK Simmons in Whiplash, his performance in this should be fire

my brother in christ, road to perdition is so absolutely leaps and bounds above the batman that you might as well call Conrad L. Hall f****** Superman

ParkerPoseyGuffman Mar 27, 2026 +4
That part might be a copypasta

Absolutely leaps and bounds above The Batman? I don’t think so

HuuuuugeDick Mar 27, 2026 +1
Oh yeah? Even with that shit third act plus the Falcone Catwoman side plot?

there's an impostor among the movies you mentioned

Fresnobing Mar 27, 2026 +3
I mean thats because they were shooting for the sky. I think its lame we heap extra judgement on that rather than only criticizing a film on what it ended up as. Like road to perdition is a decent quality film that was aiming to be a great film and missed by a solid margin. Didnt have the juice as they say. But because it dared try there’s a lot of people who would write it off as of it was terrible and it isnt that. (Not saying you are doing this, but acknowledging the overall phenomenon)

Accomplished_Store77 Mar 27, 2026 +3
This isn't the first time you've done this. But every time you try to sneak in The Batman with absolute classics it gives me a good hearty laugh.

This has to be a troll

Kundrew1 Mar 27, 2026 +1
It’s a great movie imo. Not on the level of some of those you mentioned but miles better than the Batman which dragged on forever.

KlutzyInvestments Mar 27, 2026 +4
Do you know any more about the plot than the article? If they’re playing British/Anglo opposites, awesome! But not so convincing if they’re supposed to be some Adriatic ethnicity. I get that Greece is probably the cheapest and most beautiful windswept crag prison landscape. I just can’t easily find if it’s supposed to be set in our universe during/post-WWII Greece, a completely original story using 1940s themes, or something in between.

So the film will be about... "what we have here is failure to communicate"
4
Bunraku_Master_2021 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I knew I wasn't the only one to recognize the Cool Hand Luke similarity. The plot has some familiarity with Beau Travail (1999) given that it's a psychological duel between a French Foreign Legion officer and his team's new recruit while stationed in the Gulf of Djibouti while Chazelle's film is supossed to be some psychological power play between an authority figure and a rebel. So, except a gripping prison drama while also being a deconstructive power play of masculinity and power systems.

Glad Murphy is working with another good director. He doesn't get enough leading or major supporting roles
13

really? he’s been a leading man or major supporting character in like dozens of films lol

Chazelle needs to drop more films, more frequently.

He had to pivot after Leo dropped out of his Evil Knievel project. But yes, we need more of his films

No. She was in The Phoenician Scheme. She's also Kate Winslet's daughter.

Wondering how he's gonna force jazz into this one. In all seriousness, there is a certain lane that Damien operates best in, when looking at the similarities between Whiplash and La La Land, that I can't quite put my finger on that this feels like another First Man or Babylon misfire. Maybe it's my mind thinking something as simple as period piece vs. modern, but this feels like a make or break piece for him, so the pressure is on.
1
ShirgimShareem Mar 28, 2026
But First Man and Babylon were good movies.

1

I mean all the modern VistaVision films (The Brutalist, Bugonia, One Battle, Wuthering Heights) have had at least some footage shot on Super 35.

Glad to see Damien Chazelle hasn't been put in director jail after Forst Man struggled and Babylon flopped. He's a great director and I hope this one works out well

This sounds awesome and I love Damien Chazelle

I get so excited any time Daniel Craig is in a movie, he like barely does any
1
KansanJohnBrown24 Mar 27, 2026 -1
Yay…another film not shot in the US, another step towards the total destruction of the U.S. film industry
-1
timstantonx Mar 27, 2026 -2
Please don’t have Craig doing some cringe ass accent.
-2
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -31
i think Chazelle is kind of a hack, so I have pretty low expectations. His films all feel like green book core Oscar fodder to me
-31
ChiefLeef22 Mar 27, 2026 +26
Now *that's* a hot take it if I've ever seen one lol. I get this for something like Babylon I guess. But Whiplash, First Man and La La Land are just incredibly directed films period
26
TripleSingleHOF Mar 27, 2026 +11
Babylon is insane, I think that's the best job he's done directing a movie. Some of those scenes in that flick were very impressive. It's a movie that's really only for cinephiles, but the movie looks incredible, if nothing else.
11
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -10
y’all Babylon boys are tripping. That film is a wreck
-10
TripleSingleHOF Mar 27, 2026 +5
Yeah, we get it, you don't like Chazelle, settle your hate boner down, no one cares.
5
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -10
diva, you are triggereddddddd by my opinion. I’m sorry I don’t bow down to one of your film bro gods edit: awww, this perfect angel did some nasty personal attacks and then ran away😭
-10
TripleSingleHOF Mar 27, 2026 +4
Holy shit you're insufferable. I don't even like Chazelle all that much, genius.
4
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -13
I disagree. I think they’re very safe, style over substance studio films with nothing to really say. He plays for the middle and avoids anything that is truly controversial, and that’s why he gets to big studio bucks.
-13
Zestyclose_Ad_5815 Mar 27, 2026 +15
Imagine calling Whiplash a studio film. Imagine calling First Man style over substance.
15
blucthulhu Mar 27, 2026 +2
Yeah, it's certainly an opinion. Takes all kinds.
2
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -2
It was distributed by Sony😭😭😭
-2
Zestyclose_Ad_5815 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Bold Films, Blumhouse Productions, and Right of Way Films produced the film. Sony Pictures Classics bought distribution rights.
3
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 +1
It was a 3.3 million dollar film and the finance behind it bet hard that it would get picked up by a big gun, and they were right.
1
xxGunsRazorsKnivesxx Mar 27, 2026 +15
You think Whiplash is a safe movie?
15
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -8
yes, incredibly so
-8
AcreaRising4 Mar 27, 2026 +14
that is one of the most insane things I’ve read in a while. There’s nothing safe about Babylon. Hell, anyone who creates a film like whiplash is obviously talented.
14
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -1
I take it you watch mostly big studio American stuff? This includes A24
-1
AcreaRising4 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Literally watched homebound last night. Probably watch a foreign film every week? I speak Hindi so I watch a lot of Indian movies.
2
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026
fair
0
Kazaloogamergal Mar 27, 2026 -5
I wouldn't call him a hack but he certainly isn't great in my opinion. La La Land is fine and so is Whiplash but they aren't films that I go back to. I don't get the GOAT discussion that surrounds him.
-5
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 -5
he’s a film bro fave. His films are great if you only watch big giant American Hollywood stuff like super hero and Nolan, but there are so many directors that does what he does significantly better
-5
FearlessFerret7611 Mar 27, 2026 +6
LOL what a gatekeeping edgelord you are.
6
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026
The gate is open I would love people to come inside and support more diverse and interesting films/directors
0
FearlessFerret7611 Mar 27, 2026 +2
You seem to think that if somebody likes "American Hollywood" movies then that's all they like. It's the stance of a teenage edgelord contrarian and is pretty pathetic and insufferable. Strong film-snob vibes. You do realize that people can like multiple styles and genres, right? I like Chazelle. I also watch a ton of lesser known foreign stuff. Does that still make me a "filmbro"?
2
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026
I’ve just had enough of the film bro Chazelle, Nolan, Fincher, Tarantino circlejerk 🤷🏻‍♀️
0
FearlessFerret7611 Mar 27, 2026 +2
So you rebel against it by lumping anyone who likes any of them into one big stereotype group. It's ok, we all had our contrarian snarky/angsty phase, you'll grow out of it eventually.
2
rockandrollzomby Mar 27, 2026 +1
